Did you think you had your coupon inserts stolen the other week? Or maybe you thought the postman forgot to deliver them. It was neither. There were no inserts. This week there were two Smart Source and two Red Plum inserts. Usually they have inserts each week, but sometimes they don’t. Usually they don’t have them during a holiday week. I post their coupon insert schedule in January when they come out with their new schedule. Now, if you didn’t get them this week, that is a different story.

Wine for Dummies

Excellent Marketplace listings for “Wine for Dummies” by Ed McCarthy and Mary Ewing-Mulligan starting as low as $1.99!

Dollar Tree plans to buy Family Dollar for $8.5 billion. A lot of competitors have started offering dollar items at their stores to compete with them, so the move was made to stem some of the revenue shortfalls. The combined stores will have more buying power to help reduce their costs. There will have a combined over 13,000 stores. I’d imagine some will close due to some being in close proximity of each other’s stores.

Remington College School of Cosmetology is offering free haircuts in August to all children 17 and under. Also, when parents donate school supplies they can get a free pedicure, manicure or haircut for themselves. All school supplies collected go to local schools. Summer Fun with Ghirardelli Chocolate!

It’s that time of year when wineries start to introduce new vintages which means the previous vintage will go on sale. Sign up to get their e-mails and you may even get bonus discounts.

Many stores have great sales on wine. You can regularly find good wine marked almost half off at Giant Eagle and other stores and wine shops.

Some stores have discounted wine that they are trying to sell off. The wine can be marked as low as a penny above cost in Ohio. When Tops was here they had to dump any wine they didn’t sell when they closed. Even the $100 bottles. You’d think they could discount it more so that it would sell, but the law wouldn’t allow it. Oh to be the sink that had those bottles poured into it.

Some wineries offer big discounts if you join their Wine Club. They will typically send you wine every 3 to 6 months at discounted prices when you sign up. You’ll usually get free tastings, discounted delivery fees, additional discounts when purchasing wine at the winery, and invitations to special events at the winery. Some may even offer up a secret handshake that only members will know along with a special hoot sound that will alert other members that as a fellow member you are nearby and thirsty.

Save up to 65% at Beaches Negril Resort & Spa

Wine tags are coupons found on bottles of wine. They were more prevalent back some years ago, but there are still some found here and there. You can find coupons for meat, produce, condiments, snacks, and other items. Depending on the state you live in you don’t always need to purchase wine with it. In Ohio you don’t need to purchase the wine. Cashiers sometimes see a wine bottle advertised on the coupon and they mistakingly think you need to purchase the wine with it. If you get in good with the wine person at your store you can have them save you some good ones in exchange for cookies you baked or a short back massage.

Up to 50% off Brands You Love

Rebates for wine can be found on bottles of wine at most stores. You can usually find one that will give you a rebate for purchases of 1, 3, 6, or 12 bottles. I regularly find rebates for $24 for a case of wine. I’ve even seen rebates of $50 for a case of wine. Buying one bottle usually gets you $2 off or so and it tiers up from there.

Most every store will give you a 10% discount when you buy a case of wine. You usually can mix and match so that you don’t have to buy all of one wine. Wineries usually do the same. Some even give bigger discounts. Some offer 5% off for half a case. Once the boxes are empty they can then make for great storage for corn, ballerina shoes, or water balloons.

I’ve purchased cases that some out of state wineries were trying to get rid of at 75% off the original price! Sometimes shipping can be costly though, but I’ve gotten it shipped from California for as low as $25 a case. At times some wineries offer free shipping if you buy a case of their wine.

My favorite year for wine is 2007. What does that mean? Wine has good and bad growing seasons. And 2007 was a great year. Off the charts for reds in California. Give me a bottle from that year and a straw and I am one happy camper. There was a Guenoc 2007 Petite Syrah that I hunted down at most every Giant Eagle. The 2009 year vintage was good too. This year will be a bad year with all the cold. Hot and dry weather can stress the grapes making them more concentrated in flavor.

Dry reds and some dry white wine like Chardonnays can be stored and drank five to ten years past it’s vintage year (year shown on the bottle). Sweeter wines have to be drank much sooner, usually within three years. Once the wine is past its peak or a new year comes in then some stores will mark down the old stuff. Some of the old stuff can still be pre-peak so it’s worth digging around for those wines. By peak I mean the wine has the best taste. If it sits too long, especially with sweeter wines, it goes bad over time. Then it can taste like vinegar or the juice you find in a dumpster.

Yes, you can probably call me a wine snob. I’ve tried wines from just about every state and visited all the major wine regions multiple times. I’ve even had wines from Maine, Alaska, and Montana. My favorites are dry, earthy, tobacco, leathery Merlots, Cabs, and Petite Syrahs. Funny, because that is also how I’d imagine a college party to smell like. I also like a buttery, oaky chardonnays. A crisp Riesling is nice too. Everyone has their own taste, so what one thinks as spectacular another person might think it is like yucky dank end-of-the-day dark socks worn by Wilford Brimley.

My favorite region for quality value-priced wine is Washington. The best wines are in the Walla Walla region where it is like a desert and a ton of farms. Many of them tore out their apple orchards and switched to vineyards. My favorites there are a Barnard Griffin Port, Tagaris Merlot, Milbrant Merlot, and pretty much anything from Chateau St Michelle, Columbia Crest, and Columbia Valley.

Some of my other favorite wines are R&B Improviser, Soda Rock Merlot, Duckhorn Decoy Merlot, Fingerlakes Reislings, Perry Creek Zinman, Mitchell Katz Chardonnary, and Millcreek Vineyards Waterwheel Red.

Ghirardelli Chocolate - Super Sweet Sale

A bottle of wine typically is equal in volume to 4 glasses of wine, but that depends on how a restaurant pours it and the size of the glass they pour it in. Sometimes you can get 6 glasses out of a bottle of wine if they are pouring them into small glasses. As a standard, multiply the glass price times 4 and if it is more than the cost of the bottle then get the bottle, if you plan on drinking that much. Check out their wine glasses first to see what size they are and also see how much they are pouring. Some places use tiny glasses while others use large wine glasses. Some pour a good amount into a glass while other measure it out with a pour container or just skimp on the pour.

One thing to remember is that Ohio allows you to cork the bottle and take it home if you don’t finish it. That didn’t use to be the case some years ago, but now it’s allowed by law. I remember going to a restaurant and the owner said we couldn’t take our unfinished bottle home. I told him it was the law that you could. He wasn’t aware of the law. Needless to say, he wasn’t aware of much as his restaurant kept going downhill and eventually closed.

Wedding favors and bridal shower favors

Many bars and restaurants do happy hour pricing on wine. Many are a $1 off or so for a glass of wine. Some charge $5 a glass…not that great of a deal, especially if their glasses are small.

Places like Bar Louie will do $4 glasses of wine including glasses that are normally up to $12.50.

Saaj Lebanese Restaurant in Solon has $4 happy hour glasses for wine for all their wine, including some originally around $10.

Find the best wines as found by the Ohio Grape Industries Committe at This past winter was rough so many vines didn’t produce grapes. We’ll see if they can get back on track for next year.

Any Ice wine at Ohio wineries is top notch and win tons of awards. Usually they have to wait for two days of 19 degree weather before they can pick the grapes for the ice wine.

There are many Ohio wineries making spectacular wine. Sure, many years ago there were some and still are ones that still make the sweet stuff. But don’t let that fool you. There are many making great dry varietels. Some of the ones that made nasty wine some years ago have turned the corner and they now make spectacular wine. Just like wine from anywhere it can be good one year and the next year not so good because each season is different.

Here are my favorites:
1) Markko’s – awesome chardonnays, cab sauvignon, and Rieslings
2) Harpersfield – superb chardonnays and other dry white varietals
3) South River Winery – some great red blends and whites
4) St Joseph – great pinot noir (won double gold in San Fran)
5) Gervasi -Italian varietels
6) M Cellars – great potential
7) Laurello – great variety of quality wines. Some Italian varieties too. Try the Rodavi.
8) Maple Ridge – not open much, but great wines – organic too
There are also others that have a spectacular one or two – Troutman Cab Franc, LaLure Pinot Grigio, and many others.

Driving through wine regions is like taking a stroll through Heaven’s back yard. The wineries sit on rolling hills in opulent properties. Some look like mansions, rustic retreats, or even castles. Some of the best wine regions for the scenery are Paso Robles, Dry Creek Region, Sierra Foothills, Fingerlakes, the Dalles, Williamette Valley, and the Niagara region.

Check out these wineries for great views:
1) Lakehouse Inn – it’s a B&B that sits on a bluff next to the lake, they have a deck on the lake, garden area that is a site to see that goes down to the lake.
2) Gervasi Winery – located in Canton. The place looks like an opulent California winery. Beautiful
3) South River (Church winery) – rebuilt church now a winery, great picnic pavilion and terrace area overlooking the winery.
4) Wolf Creek – overlooks a lake in Akron
5) Ferrante – busy, but the place looks high falutin’
6) St Joseph – new location – great overlook
7) Mastropietro – many weddings there

sale books

Most every winery has a great atmosphere. Here are some good ones:
1) Hermes – cool old barn
2) Vino Veritas – in Little Italy
3) South River – rebuilt old church with a great deck area and picnic pavilion with a fireplace and Adirondack chairs
4) Lake House Inn – so mellow overlooking the lake with relaxing nooks and crannies and spectacular gardens
5) Thorn Creek Winery – landscaper modeled the place inside and out and did a great job
6) Harpersfield Winery – like a French chateau
7) Spring Hill Winery – wooded inside opens up to a patio with an open-air pavilion for a band

Old Mill is unique with old wood beams. It’s near downtown Geneva. Can get a bit warm during the summer inside.

Many have great music venues (indoor and/or outdoor) like Grand River Cellars, Ferrante, Chalet Debonnet, Harpersfield, Firehouse, Old Mill, and Laurello. Chalet Debonnet has a great outdoor facility. They have craft beer there too with a brewery called Rat Cellar Brewery.

If you like the sweet wines that Ohio was known for way back when then try John Christ, Klingshirn, Firehouse, Emerine Estates (try their caramel apple), Buccia, and Virant. I’m not crazy about them. Too much sugar can make them headache wines.

Some wines are sourced from outside of Ohio. Because the source changes most every year the taste can change also. You’ll see those bottles labeled American instead of say, Grand River Valley.

Shop at Home. We Deliver.

Some restaurants charge a corkage fee. It’s a fee to open a bottle of wine that you brought in. Works great since you can find a steal at a store and then bring it in to open for $5 or less. Some places don’t even charge a fee to do so.

At Cedar and Green Wine and Cheese you can pick a bottle in their store and drink it there with a $5 corkage fee. You can find great deals on bottles. Some are less the $10 on sale. Located in University Heights across from Heinens on South Green Road. They have great deals on wine tasting events.

At Pranzo located in downtown Willoughby bring in your own bottle and pay $2 per person (or per glass) for a corkage fee. It’s a great deal since most restaurants charge double of what a store charges for a bottle of wine.

Biga Woodfired Pizzaria in Kirtland across from the High School lets you bring wine in and they have a $5 corkage fee.

Grumpys in Tremont lets you bring in wine. There is a convenience store across the street with a decent selection and price.

Deweys Coffee in Shaker Square has a $5 corkage fee.

Molinari’s in Mentor has a $5 corkage fee for wines that they sell at the restaurant.

Personalized Glassware at The Knot Wedding Shop

One of my favorite discoveries for wine this year is Red, Wine, & Brew in Mentor across from Lowe’s. They let you pick a bottle of wine in their store and you can have the bottle there for $2 or more for a corkage fee, depending on the price of the bottle. Not per glass, but by bottle! The best part of it is they have a great selection at great prices so you don’t have to pay a ton for a good bottle of wine. You can find a great selection of wine from $7.99 a bottle and up! Many great finds from $10 to $15 that would normally go for double if not triple the price at restaurants.

Kosicek Winery – located on 534 near South River Road. Nice place.

A big change from last year about tasting fees with Ohio wines. Wineries no longer have to charge a quarter per taste. The rule changed in July 2014.

In some wine regions most of the wineries don’t charge for tastings, usually at wineries off the beaten path too. Some will credit the tasting fee if you buy a bottle of wine (Fingerlakes). Some charge way too much like $5 or $10 for a tasting if not more (Napa). Some are free after using a wine pass that gets you freebie tastings and discounts (Dry Creek Region and Fingerlakes). Some charge a reasonable amount or none at all (Sonoma). Some you can find free tasting coupons on their web-site. Some wineries should pay you to taste their wine and then use your body for science to test the effects of nasty wine.

The Cleveland Wine Festival usually runs in June at Voinivich Park, but this year they didn’t have the event.

This huge wine event is half at Lake Farmparks in Kirtland. It’s being held August 2nd & 3rd. Tons of Ohio wineries participate. Music and events all day long from 1-10 pm. Look for a $10 off $30 gate ticket coupon in the Sun Newspapers. Click here for more information:

WVIZ throws a great wine event each year. It’s one of my favorites. Heinens helps sponsor the event. Many of the wines they sell will be poured at the event. Great food there too. It’s on Nov 1st and 2nd at the Terrace Club at Progressive Field. Click here for more information:

Typically the festival is the last weekend in September in downtown Geneva. Stomp grapes, try grape pies, and listen to bands. You can do wine tastings at one of the halls there.

In July they have a BBQ and wine and beer event at Progressive Field. For more info click here:
