EUROPEAN VACATION
We took a trip to Europe to visit our exchange daughter, Daisy, in Austria and her family and also to celebrate our 15-year wedding anniversary on an 8-day cruise to Italy, France, and Spain. Of course, we traveled affordably.

I booked the flights using airline miles. We were flying to Vienna, Austria and then to Rome for the cruise. My wife had enough miles for a free ticket. I needed more points to get a free ticket so I bought miles at a discount. Buying miles can be cheaper than buying the ticket outright, especially with overseas flights and depending on how many miles you already have. United was having a sale on their points with an additional 40% off of purchased mile points. I bought mine through Points.com where you can find all the points deals that airlines are offering.

Now what are airline miles or points? Most airlines offer miles that are earned by flying the airline. In the past airlines usually gave you a certain number of miles or points depending on how far you fly. Many airlines have changed how they award points or miles by instead determining the reward by the price of the ticket instead of miles flown.

Flying to Europe usually takes a minimum of 50,000 points. The number of points needed depends on where and when you fly and if there is a deal being offered. For our flight we needed 60,000 points.

My wife got a free ticket because she opened up a United credit card and they gave her 50,000 points. She had to charge a certain amount on the credit card over a few months in order for her to get the full reward. You can find what points deals credit cards offer on sites such as http://www.creditcards.com, http://www.thepointsguy.com and http://www.dansdeals.com.

When travelling overseas it’s usually best to stay a minimum of two weeks. One of the reasons is because the price of the ticket is so expensive, so it’s best to make the most of the trip. There is so much to see and do that two weeks doesn’t afford enough time to see what you want.

Another reason is jet lag. It takes at least two or three days to adjust to the time difference. It’s best not to take a nap the first day and to just tough it out so that you can adjust to the time change quicker.

Our flight left around 11 am on a Saturday and we got there around 8 am on Sunday. There is a 6 hour time difference when we flew to Austria.

On international flights most airlines will give you free wine and beer. The downside is having to go to the tiny bathrooms after filling up on fluids. They have a trash can where you have to push it to get it open. It’s probably filled with germs so when I throw out the paper towel I jab real quick into it before it closes so that I don’t have to touch it.

Getting through customs is usually pretty easy in European Union countries (EU). Coming back to the U.S. can take longer as you have to talk to a customs officer and the lines can sometimes be long. One tip – if you have a connecting flight in Europe or any other overseas country make sure you have enough time to get to you gate after you go through their customs. Most European airports you will need to take a bus to your plane or terminal which can make you late for a flight and that angry. Try to avoid starting your trip angry.

vienna-2

We visited Vienna in Austria. Beautiful city. So much of Europe has elegant architecture and opulent buildings, especially churches. Vienna is no different. We got the grand tour from Daisy’s mom as she is full of knowledge of everything Austrian.

wine-cellar

We took a tour of the wineries in the region. Our exchange daughter’s family has a vineyard and they make a great Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Gruner Vetliner. We also tasted a spectacular Merlot that was aging in their cellar.

von-trapps

We hiked up a mountain in Schneebergbahn which is at the start of the Alps. I felt like the Von Trapps crossing the mountains in the Sound of Music. The odd thing is that most Austrians have never seen the Sound of Music.

alps

We also went swimming in some very large natural pools in Bad Vasl where they are from. It has a natural spring that you can drink from and I did. The water is murky. Enough so, now this is gross, that they found a dead person in the pool sometime after they passed away from a heart attack. I just was hoping I didn’t step on something squishy myself while I was in the pool.

chip-flavors

Spare rib flavored chips!

I made stops at Aldi’s there! It’s called Hofer in Austria. I also stopped at Lidl, a similar store to Aldi’s that is opening in the U.S. soon. It seemed like half the stores were for selling chocolate and candies. A package of large fresh figs was only .99 Euro at Aldi’s there. One Euro is about $1.15 in U.S. dollars.

wine-barcelona

In Europe one thing that is super cheap there is wine. You can get tons of different bottles of wine for less than 5 Euros (around $6 in U.S. dollars). Some even less than 2 Euros!

From there we flew to Rome for our cruise. We got there early to spend a couple days in Rome to check out the sights. Best to be in the city where the cruise originates to make sure you don’t miss it due to cancelled or delayed flights. One time when we were in Vancouver, Canada we saw someone running down the dock yelling “Wait, Wait!”. The ship doesn’t wait for late people.

colosseum

We saw pretty much everything in Rome and our tennis shoes can attest to it as we walked most every inch of the city. We saw the Colosseum, the Parthenon, Trevi Fountain, the Vatican, and Roman ruins.

The earthquake that devastated Amatrice was only about 100 miles away. We didn’t feel any aftershocks. Some restaurants were taking donations through part of your meal price.

Hotels.com: $99 or Less

We booked a room at the View of Rome hotel right outside the walls of the Vatican. It was only $90 per day and was rate a 5 on Tripadvisor! I like checking Tripadvisor to make sure the place we are staying is ok and not full of crickets, banana peels, or smelly ghosts. I try to stay in hotels rates 4 or higher out of 5 – Guest rating and not hotel rating! We booked it on Hotels.com. They offer a free stay after 10 visits, discounts, and a rebate at times on the site.

pope-mother-theresa

The neatest thing was that we were able to get tickets to see Mother Theresa being canonized as a Saint by Pope Francis. I love the Pope and to see him canonizing a Saint was just amazing. So historic. I left my application to become a Saint there as I figured they may be looking for a new one.

We got tickets for the mass a couple days before the event. Turns out we would have had to be there at around 5 am just to get a seat up close.

We weren’t able to get close to the front of the mass, but instead we were in the back where all the cameras from international TV stations were positioned. I think we were on the stations for India and some other ones I never heard of. So we are rock stars there now.

It was super hot and they were passing out water and many people were just pouring it over their heads.

There was an area just north of the walls of the Vatican where we staying that had vendors selling rosaries, key chains, and magnets for only 1 Euro! Great deal.

There were some great deals on clothes in Italy. Shoes were inexpensive. I wore a size 44. European size that is.

In all the countries we visited they took the Euro. We converted it at home through Huntington Bank. They only charge a one time $8 fee to convert as much as you want. The banks in Europe were mostly charging a 5% commission to convert and their exchange rates weren’t that good.

I was able to find an exchange store in Rome that didn’t charge commission and traded at about the going rate. The exchange rates can be found at http://www.xe.com.

The worst place to exchange your money is at the airport. Their rates are usually the worst.

The rates were anywhere from .68 to .84 Euros for every American dollar. So it was like saving $20 for every $100 exchanged when finding the best exchange place.

It’s a great time to travel to Europe because the exchange rate is so good. Not too many years go it used to be around .40 in Euros for every American dollar.

Better yet, get a credit card that doesn’t charge a foreign exchange fee to use for all your money transactions. Our United credit card doesn’t charge a fee.

gute-fahrt

When I first booked the cruise I got it for around $900 on http://www.vacationstogo.com. It was better than what I found through Royal Caribbean. I kept checking to see if the price went down as you can cancel or rebook it if you find a better price up to 75 days before the cruise.

One day when I was checking I saw the price dropped to $622. We quickly booked it. Later that day the price jumped to over $800.

Sometimes credits are offered for onboard purchases too.

We got an inside cabin which means there is no window. We were hardly ever in our room, so it wasn’t worth the extra $200 or so Per PERSON to pay for a round window in the room. Balcony rooms are cool, especially when there are great views to be seen when sailing. The price can be double the price of and inside cabin though.

I got an internet package for the cruise before we sailed for 30% off unlimited access. Usually the cruiseline offers deals on internet while on the ship, but this time it didn’t. The problem was the connection was wonky. I kept having to reconnect. I complained and they are crediting me the full amount. Be sure to complain early on any issue to see if they can fix the issue. If not, that gives them time to credit your account before the end of the trip and also builds a history in case you need to take them to task to get a credit.

The cruise started in Rome (Civitavecchia) and then went to Corsica, France; Toulon, France (near Marseille, Provence, and St Tropez), Barcelona, Spain; Valencia, Spain; Mallorca, Spain, and Naples, Italy. Only one day at sea. An eight-day cruise that was well worth the $622 per person.

corsica-market

Next up was Corsica, France where we met up with an exchange student and her family. It was where Napolean was born and we saw a huge statue of him in town. When he went into disfavor they banished him to an island where he died.

Toulon, France was next and we booked a wine tour to Aix en Provence and Bandol. So we were about ready to leave that morning and I got a message that they had to cancel it because the guide became extremely ill. Bummer, because we were looking forward to it.

austrian-vineyard-2

So we had to scramble to find other plans. That is where we felt we were part of the show, Amazing Race. We decided to go to Bandol which is known for their wine and also has a nice beach.

The bus was only 3 Euros each way so it was very affordable. The ship charged around $40 per person to do the same. Buses can be the best way to go in some towns, but be wary of them as they might have wonky schedules that can be hard to decipher.

They said take bus 8086 which can be found in the city center. We get there and none of the bus shelters showed a bus 8086 on their schedule, so we started asking bus drivers where we can catch it. We got about eight different answers from different bus drivers and people waiting for buses and restaurant workers. We’re sweating and looking frantic asking people shouting out “Bandol”, “Beach (like as if they know English)” “8086!”, and “Bus”. I’m sure they thought we were nuts. I should have just disheveled my hair and started drooling on myself as we would have gotten the same looks and I would have entertained myself some.

It was 9:25 am and we still didn’t know where to catch the bus and the bus was supposed to be at one of the stops at 9:30. The next bus was at 11:30 so there was more pressure to get this bus since we didn’t want to wait that long for the next bus. There is not much time in each port so you don’t want to spend too much time with logistics and transportation. For instance, we originally wanted to go to St Tropez, but the bus took about an hour and a half each way so the driving would just eat up too much of the day.

We were running around town like fools and sweating up a storm. Trying to thread together some French that we could remember from high school and looking like panicked tourists we got what seemed to be a more confident answer from a bus driver as to which bus stop the bus would be at and so we waited at that bus stop.

Sure enough, about a minute later the bus shows up. Whew! So if you need to take bus 8086 in La Seyne, France the bus picks up across the street from the Police station.

We ended up finding a winery that did tastings in Bandol. That made up some for missing the winery tour.

lunch

We ate grilled squid – delicious – and seafood paella. We always go for the town specialty.

We get a magnet at every place we visit – you can negotiate prices on them, mostly at the stands. I can hear my refrigerator groaning knowing we are bring back more magnets to put on it.

From there we went to Barcelona where we met up with another exchange student for a bit before she had to go to school. Again, another Amazing Race moment. She had only a limited amount of time to spend with us before going back to school that morning. The ship got people off the boat late and we were supposed to meet her by a statue. We are fast walkers, but the statue was too far for us too hoof it. She was probably only going to wait about ten or fifteen more minutes. So we took a taxi. We run to the statue and look around the statue, but we didn’t see her. We go around a few more times and nothing. We thought we missed her. We look across the street and there she is looking for us. Whew #2!

barcelona-cathedral

We walk down the promenade and a flock of parrots fly by. I ran so far away. We walked around the whole city and see all the sites. We saw the most beautiful church I think I ever saw. It was the Cathedral of Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia or otherwise known as Barcelona Cathedral.

We were warned about pickpockets in Barcelona. Sure enough, near the church there was a sign at a restaurant warning people about pickpockets. They say to wear your backpack in front of you. Also keep your wallet in your front pocket. It’s good to jam your pockets with tissues or maps just to cause friction in case people try to take things. But always watch each other and anyone that is following you or getting too close. Also be aware of anyone that works in tandem with the pickpockets like a beggar that will distract you. If you give a beggar change it signals to the pickpocket where you keep your money. We found out some of the people on the cruise ship got pickpocketed in Toulon. They are anywhere there are tourists, so be wary.

pickpockets

The pickpockets are to the left near the beggar. They are watching the crowd looking for an easy target.

We stopped at the beach and one group of tourists brought all of their luggage to the beach. They stacked them up like a little mountain.

And yes, many of the beaches we visited were topless. I even went topless.

I played volleyball with two Russians against a few Norwegians in Barcelona. Played some volleyball in Austria too. Apparently I played well enough because when we took the train to Vienna the father of one of the girls I played against that took the train with us mentioned how I was a good volleyball player that blocked a lot of balls. So my volleyball skills are world-reknown now. Ha!

I also played in a volleyball tournament on the ship. I won my second gold medal for the year on Royal Caribbean! I got a gold medal and a water bottle as a prize. I also got a rad tan from being in the sun too long during the games.

I then played in the soccer tournament. Reminder to self. Don’t bother playing soccer against mostly Europeans. Also don’t kick at a ball against a person three times my size. Amazing how big a welt can get on a leg. I played with a gal from London and a guy from Italy who I played with on the volleyball team.

Earlier in the week a tall German guy was the only one to show up at a volleyball game on the court so we just practiced hitting and bumping the ball. He showed up late to the tournament and I tried to get him on our team, but we already had enough players. He was bummed. He played real well and played unselfishly. After we won he came over to play on our team since we had a couple players that knew what they were doing, a gal from Connecticut and the guy from Italy. Otherwise it was backyard volleyball-palooza.

We visited Valencia, Spain next. They had a great market with freaky-looking seafood. We ate more grilled squid and paella there. So cheap too. It was 18 Euros for the meals and a half liter of Sangria. The picture below shows a vendor selling live eels.

eels

Tipping is odd too. Most countries there is no tipping or 10% tipping. Even the receipts don’t have a spot to put down a tip. Some places charge a service fee which in essence, is a tip. Usually it was 2 Euro per person, but that wasn’t the norm.

breakfast-special

Lots of cafes did a deal for just over 2 Euro for a coffee and pastry. Many did combo deals. Some had happy hour.

No coupons though! Europe hasn’t caught onto coupons.

Speaking of food, the cruise dinners were great. I always got more than one appetizer and entrée because I could. In the end I didn’t gain much weight because we were always on the go all day. Most every day we were up after 6:00 am.

We met some great folks that were assigned to our dinner table. One was a couple from Hawaii. He won a grammy for Hawaii back in ’86. The other was a mother and daughter from Seattle.

Claudine busted out some great tunes at karaoke enough to garner a “she’s professional” from the karaoke DJ.

We did have some bumps as they forgot to do anything for our anniversary. We mentioned it to a manager. They ended up giving us a bottle of champagne and a great bottle of red wine as we bumped into the beverage manager and he hooked us up. They also got us a dinner at one of the places that charges for dinner. Those places are just like paying for dinner at a restaurant and not worth it as you can get great meals in the dining room.

palma-de-mallorca-cathedral-2

Our next stop was Mallorca, an island in Spain. They are known for their pearls. They have a beautiful church in town. We found a great sale on clothes. We got four dress shirts there for 13.80 Euros after an additional 70% off sale.

mt-vesuvius

Our last stop was in Naples. From there we did an excursion to Pompeii, the city that was buried in ash and lava when Mt Vesuvius exploded in 79 A.D. (volcano in the back of the pic). The city ruins are still very well preserved and we walked all around the town. Even painting on some walls in the building are in good shape. They are still doing lots of excavating there.

party-at-napolis

We went to a restaurant for a Margherita pizza. Naples is where pizza was born. The Margherita pizza was made for the queen and topped with “colors” of the Italian flag. Mozzarella for white, tomato sauce for red and basil for green. So I chowed down on the pizza and paid then left.

Afterwards I had a freak out moment. We went to a café and I opened my wallet only to discover I didn’t have the credit card I paid with at the pizza restaurant in my wallet. Yipes! So I figured it was still at the restaurant or maybe I dropped it. I preferred option #1. So we quickly buzzed back to the restaurant. I was wondering if the restaurant would even be open yet because it was a Sunday. I ran into the restaurant and all I said was credit card and the hostess said yes she had it. She was relieved and said she tried to catch me, but as usual my tennis shoes were in turbo mode and she couldn’t find me.

Speaking of relieving. Watch out for dog doodoo in Europe. Many of the cities don’t do a good job of cleaning up their sidewalks of it. I hit a fresh pile in Rome and Naples and nearly missed it in most every other city.

The day we left to go home we got up early on the ship to catch an early transfer bus. It was for waste because the flight ended up delayed for about 3 hours. They had to reschedule our flight out of Chicago. We ended up being up for almost 30 hours. Sleeping on the plane was tough. Of course, we had the wailing kid in our section that didn’t help things.

When you get back home from a trip make sure you check you credit card statements online just to make sure you were charged correctly.

prosciutto

We had a great trip and learned a lot. If you have never travelled overseas, do it. Your world will grow. You will also most likely change your perspectives.

At one of the events on the ship we sat with a couple from Saudi Arabia. Very nice and personable as we talked about the differences in our countries. The guy lived in Portland for five years. I asked him if he ever saw the naked bikeride there. In Portland they have an event where people ride their bikes naked – hundreds of people participate. He told me he didn’t see it, but his friend did and the friend thought it was the end of the world. He was laughing as was I.

rome-deal

The deal in the pic is a full meal with a bottle of wine for a little over $3!

We did find they do some things differently in Europe. For one, some places charge you to go to the bathroom. Usually the public bathrooms charge around a Euro or less.

Another is that you don’t get free refills on coffee or pop. Pop is very expensive at restaurants too. Better to go to the store there to get pop as you can get a liter for around a Euro.

Most stores don’t refrigerate eggs.

There are scooters everyewhere. Especially Naples. I saw a family of 4 riding one and two of them were kids probably less than 4 years old. No helmet. One standing in front on their own. Scary. And they zip around like they are in a race squeezing through minimal openings. I wanted to wear a mattress on my back just in case one of them plowed me over.

We enjoyed our trip, but now we need a sleep vacation to get rested up.

RAIL EUROPE
Great exchange rates with the Euro now! About 8 years ago you got around 40 cents for every U.S. dollar. Now it’s almost dollar for dollar! With Britain voting to leave he European Union the markets have caused the Euro to drop in value making the U.S. dollar stronger and worth more in Europe. The British Pound also dropped to a 30 year low against the dollar. It’s a great time to travel to Europe and taking Rail Europe is the way to travel from country to country while you are there.

Each week get a deal, incuding freebies, through their eAdvantage program. Sometimes they also offer a eAdvantage deal only good at GetGo gas stations. Register at http://www.gianteagle.com/Save/eadvantage-club/

Giant Eagle doubles coupons that are 99 cents or less. For example that means a .75 coupon will double to $1.50 off. It happens automatically when a coupon that is 99 cents or less is scanned at the register – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Get 10 cents in Fuelperks for every $50 spent ($3 savings).

An eOffer won’t work if you use a manufacturer coupon for the same item. An eOffer will supersede a paper coupon. Click here for dozens of eOffers (electronic coupons that link to you card and trigger when you purchase the item – only works once and doesn’t double): http://www.gianteagle.com/#

Giant Eagle posts what needs to be purchased in order to trigger a register coupon to print. Find the deals at: http://www.gianteagle.com/grocery-coupons/monthly
