HOME ENERGY AUDIT
I had a free home energy audit done on our home (I posted the freebie offer last month). The cost is $25 now, but it’s worth it. They use an infra-red analyzer that show where cold air is entering the home. They also give you some freebie items, including a High-efficiency shower head, a Kitchen and bathroom faucet aerators, Carbon monoxide detector and Water heater pipe wrap.
They’ll send a certified auditor to conduct a thorough audit of your home’s energy efficiency. They provide a report to let you know what can be done to make your home more energy efficient and in turn lower your heating and cooling costs. They analyze attic insulation to see if what’s installed is sufficient or not. They provide rebate offers you can use for purchasing more energy efficient items for your home.
You can also have a NEST smart thermostat installed at the same time, for an additional $50 fee – please make the request when scheduling your audit.

CORKY & LENNYS CLOSING
There have been a lot of iconic Cleveland restaurants that have closed over the past handful of years. Add another one to the list – Corky & Lenny’s closed after 67 years in business. I never went there, but I heard the food was good. They gave reasons for closing, including not finding enough staff. A recent lawsuit by a former server might shed some light partly on why. They accused the owners of underpaying their employees.
In a collective-party lawsuit, they said they deducted a 30-minute lunch break from the daily wages of employees who worked over six hours, even if they didn’t actually take a break. The suit also says that the restaurant paid employees who worked more than 40 hours in a week less than overtime wages of time-and-a-half, paying them $6.98 per hour rather than $9.30 an hour.
The owners said the may reopen. They said they made a profit, so why close or even why not sell it? Running a restaurant or retail is no easy task these days with the shortage of workers. Running one where workers feel appreciated, paid fairly, and not cheated is key to a thriving business. Bad management will scare away good workers. High turnover and high food safety violations are a sure sign a place is not run well and/or workers aren’t paid fairly. Cheap out on your workers and it’ll come back to bite you…and not your sandwiches.
ONE LESS WEEK OF WINTER TRIP
The last time we took a cruise was just before the Pandemic started. That cruise took us to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand in January 2020 and into February. We even found out a worker from Wuhan got on the ship and that’s when they stopped letting people serve themselves at the buffet after concerns came up about Covid! We recently went on our first cruise since then with a trip to the Caribbean.
This cruise took us from Miami to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St Martin, St Kitts, St Thomas, Tortola, and the Bahamas …well, we were supposed to go the the Bahamas, but that got cancelled due to gale force winds there.
We flew into Fort Lauderdale on United for $250 roundtrip for a non-stop. There are cheaper flights with the no frills airlines, but they are real sketchy about getting to you destination in time, if at all. I don’t want to miss taking our cruise because of the flight. We flew out a day early to make sure we got there as we were flying during winter.
I found a hotel on Hotels.com for $131 that had a shuttle from the airport. That way we didn’t pay for a cab.
Near the hotel were some restaurants. TGIFridays was there and I had a free meal coupon I redeemed with my points. We also caught happy hour there.
We took Lyft from the hotel to the cruise terminal. Transfers would have cost us $150 while Lyft cost $48. We also had a dose of free “entertainment” provided by our driver. An aroma of pot filled the car when we got in. Her passenger side mirror was busted. She said it was busted because she hit a homeless man. Twice she almost hit a car driving us there. We got within inches of hitting a car in one instance. We got into some deep conversations that I think distracted her. The one conversation was about how a passenger guy got naked in her car and asked her to come into his house. She had kids that were models in LA and she showed us pics of them. Not surprisingly, she talked about “gummies”. Another story was about some girls that were dressed provocatively that she was taking to a job interview. She also told us her brother is now living with her and he smelled real bad. She hugged us after she dropped us off.
We booked an oceanview room for the cruise. The package we got included all-you-can-drink (up to $15 each drink), $50 excursion credit, 2 specialty restaurant dining, and 300 minutes free internet were part of the package. We got it for around $700 each. We wanted a balcony and they were over $1,000 more. As prices went down I was able to get one. You can’t rebook the same class room under a lower rate within so many days of the cruise, but you can upgrade. Some cruiselines allow you to bid on an upgrade, but that isn’t guaranteed. Our rep said near Black Friday we should be able to get a good deal. I kept checking rates. Eventually, even though she said they would be available, all the balconies were sold out! However I checked another site and saw a few were available. I called back and found them and was able to upgrade us for $350 total to a balcony. Whew. It was a long 9 day cruise, so those are best to get a balcony.
Our first stop was the Dominican Republic. We took a cab ride to Sousa Beach. We negotiated a lower rate with the boss of the taxi company. The drive there let us see some litter issues. Tons in the waterways. Stray dogs and billboard signs of candidates for the next election dotted the landscape.
The beach was decent and I found a good spot to snorkel. I buy my snorkel sets for 75% or 90% off at CVS at the end of each summer season since I usually snorkel a ton when we go on vacation. Something happened to me snorkeling that never happened before. I noticed schools of fish were getting very chummy with me. Instead of swimming away from me that swam to me and all around me. One of the fish, a Seargent Major, even bit me on my hand. It was a small cut that drew a little blood. Didn’t bother me because I think it nipped me because my hand got to close to it. Then it got weird.
As I swam back to shore I noticed the fish were following me. Not just a few, but a whole school of fish. Mostly one type of fish, but there were others too. As I swam back to shore they followed me, probably over a hundred of them. They were buzzing all around me within inches of me. Were they going to eat me?
I had a feeling that some people feed them and they were expecting me to do the same, so they followed me expecting food. They all stopped at about twenty yards from shore. I found out from a local that yes, people feed the fish bananas and some other stuff. I didn’t have any McDonalds or other stuff to feed them, so they were out of luck. I did get some great video if them following me (pic above this blog).
Most people go to Meghans Bay in St Thomas, but that beach disappointed me the couple times we were there in the past. I read that Brewers Beach was frequented by locals which means it’s decent. When we got to port we almost didn’t go there because it was rainy. The taxis said they could take us there for $20 each. I balked. I saw an open air bus and asked how much they charged. Only $1! I saw that they were going east and west, so we got on and rolled the dice as Brewers was directly west. Sure enough, their last stop was just before the beach. Perfect! We got some beach time in before we had to leave because of rain. We saw a ton of turtles and sting rays. We did see a full rainbow over the beach. The Lucky Charms leprechaun even showed up and offered us a bowl of cereal.
Everything on the islands was negotiable. Our driver even told us to negotiate. Some countries tend to be poor so I didn’t want to beat them up on prices too bad, but I also didn’t want to get ripped off.
At St Martin we took a taxi to Orient Beach. Most taxis had set pricing, but depending on where you are going you could work a deal. It was way too windy at the beach, so we didn’t stay long. We saw the damage from hurricane Irma that demolished some buildings on the beach.
We went to another beach that had jet skis. I waited until the end of the day to get a better deal knowing that their business would wane. It worked! They gave me a deal for $50 for a half hour on the jet ski. Great deal for a jet ski. One of the workers at the beach lived in Brookpark and his dad still lives in Sandusky. He hooked us up with a deal on beach chairs and an umbrella.
We stopped at some stores and I found some decent deals on gin and bourbon. The one place had a liter of Bombay Sapphire gin for $18. I hemmed at paying that much, even though that was a good deal, and the owner heard it and said $16. Sold! The ship used to have great deals on liquor, but that wasn’t the case with this cruise, so I checked supermarkets and other stores in town for deals.
Our cruise included an all-you-can-drink package up to $15 each drink and no limits for the day. I tried as many drinks as I could to see if I liked them or not. Some of the better wine was priced way over $15 a glass. For instance a Decoy Cab was $25 a glass. Nobody sells it for that much in Cleveland. I had to pay the difference plus tip if I wanted it which I did once.
I complained to one of the wine sommeliers that they should have good California reds at $15 or less as there weren’t any. He ended up giving me a bottle of Zin priced at $39 for free. We could buy bottles at 20% off with our package. Too pricey when I could get drinks free, so I was happy to get one free.
Cruises usually have a lobster night, but our cruise didn’t have one. I remember sailing with Norwegian on our first cruise in Hawaii and getting as many lobsters as I wanted on lobster night. Not anymore. You could get two for $25. Other cruise lines still have a “free” lobster night.
We would get multiple dinners (free to do so!) and good thing we did. Some meals were awesome, but many of the red meat dinners were rough. The meat was like chewing my shoes. Not that I ever chewed my shoes.
We entered some raffles on the ship. We won a couple…sorta. The one was for $75 off at their spa. I was looking to pair it with a special on a massage they were offering. They said the ones I wanted it couldn’t be used on. Instead, we did a body composition test using the credit. Yeah, I’d rather have the massage, but the test was a suprise.
They hooked electrodes to my feet and hand and it pulsed to get measurements. The trainer showed us his. He had 8% body fat. It printed out a sheet with my measurements. He looked at it and his eyes popped wide open. He looks at me and said you are perfect. Ok, well, thanks, but what does he mean by perfect? He said I was at 7.7% body fat and all the measurements were right on. Just wait until the end of the cruise and that will double! But yeah, that was crazy because it’s not like I’m super buff and professional atheletes are at that level. I do work out most every day, so I try to keep fit. I’ve had around that reading before, so it wasn’t the first time seeing it. My wife had hers done and she was in the normal range, so I knew the machine wasn’t broke. The range for fit men is 14% to 17% and for women it’s 21% to 24%.
Now get this. The trainer tells me I should do more weights. Really dude. I’m fitter than you and I’m 56! So I did anyway so that I could burn more calories during the cruise while eating too much. I was benching in the fitness room on teh ship and the weight seemed really light at 150 lbs. I moved it up to 190 lbs. Still easy. I eventually did the whole stack of 250 lbs. No problem. Maybe the benching I do at the work fitness gym is more than it says or maybe the cruise gym was using leftover dinner plates for their weights.
On the flight there and back we used our United Lounge passes. Free food and drinks! In the past they were allowed to be used even when you weren’t flying the airline, but now you have to. We got to the airport early enough to use them. I overheard the front desk lady say it cost $525 for an annual pass.
On the way home we took a flight that left at noon which could be tight depending on how quick we got off the ship. The ship let us off at 7:00 am. We had to go through customs. Since we had all our bags with us we didn’t have to wait to get our luggage in the customs area. We had nothing to declare, so they just let us go through. Very quick. Getting off right at 7:00 am helped.
We booked a Lyft car for 8:15 am. It was for $55. Taxis cost $110. Transfers with the cruiseline were $150 per couple. The Lyft ride was guaranteed at that price. It showed the driver getting to us at almost 8:30 which freaked me out because you never know with traffic how long it will take. We flew out of Fort Lauderdale so it was a longer drive than flying out of Miami, but Miami tends to have longer lines for security. Lines were super short at Fort Lauderdale, so we breezed through back to Cleveland and it’s snow. Hey, at least we cancelled out over a week of winter by going on the trip.
