WALMART
WalMart plans to price match any ad between Nov 1 through Dec 25. Just bring in your WalMart receipt and they will give the difference back in a gift card. The offer excludes some items, such as groceries.
Here’s how it works: If a customer buys an eligible product at Walmart anytime between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25, and then finds that same product advertised for less at another store, Walmart will give the customer a gift card for the difference through Dec. 25. Guaranteed.
Offer excludes: Black Friday ads, expired ads, offers with Gift Cards, internet pricing, limited time or quantity offers (i.e. 6 hour sales), percentage off ads, bundles, trade-in offers, offers that require a purchase or gift provided with purchase, clearance or ads with typographical errors. The Christmas Price Guarantee does not apply to grocery items, non-branded items (i.e. live plants), tobacco, firearms, gasoline, tires, prescription drugs, optical, or wireless products that require a service agreement.
Walmart’s Christmas Price Guarantee is valid on purchases made Nov. 1 through Dec. 25 on identical items (the same brand, size, color, quantity, grade and model number) that are currently available at competitor’s stores located within the same local market as a particular Walmart storei. To apply for the Christmas Price Guarantee, customers need to simply bring in their original Walmart cash register receipt and the local competitor’s current printed ad to Walmart’s Customer Service desk through Dec. 25. Once validated, a gift card for the difference will be issued.
Items placed on layaway will also be eligible for the Christmas Price Guarantee. Walmart’s Christmas Layaway program enables customers to make payments on purchases in varying amounts when they want through Dec. 16. Toys and electronic gifts with a retail price of $15 or more are eligible.
Also, the Gas Rollback program has been extended through Dec. 24, and is available at participating Murphy stations at more than 1,000 Supercenters and 10 Walmart stations. This program gives customers a $0.10 discount on each gallon of gas or diesel fuel purchased at participating Murphy USA or Walmart stations.

DOUBLE COUPONS
Why are stores that double so much better than stores that don’t? Simply because you can get better deals. For instance, this past week Giant Eagle had Gold Peak iced tea 59 oz on sale for $2. At Marcs it was 2 for $3.98. Pretty much the same price. However, there was a .75 coupon that is found at Coupons.com that doubles at Giant Eagle. So at GE it’s 50 cents and at Marcs it costs $1.24.

INSURANCE
Every so many years and especially when insurance companies increase rates, shop around for the best rates. Ask friends and family who they use and if they like them. Be sure to get an apples to apples comparison. We did and we saved $800 a year switching to another provider for our home and auto insurance. Thems no small peanuts.
For comparison, the average insurance premium rate was $735 in Ohio. It was $476 in 2003. Recently, State Farm raised rates 12%, Grange by 16%, and Allstate by 1%. State Farm reduced rates in 2004, 2005, and 2006. There are 255 home insurance companies operating in Ohio, the 4th most in the U.S.

RED PLUM COUPONS/VALASSIS
Valassis, the company that sends out Red Plum coupon inserts, had their stock take a hit this past week when they reported its full-year forecast was well below analyst expectations, and its shares tumbled to their lowest level in more than two years before recovering.
They said The combined effect of the economy and increasing coupon redemptions are prematurely exhausting annual consumer promotion budgets in the second half of 2011. The good news is that people are using their coupons, but the bad news is that there is a limited coupon promotional budget that got exhausted early.
Valassis said it lowered its profit expectations because global economic uncertainty is leading its clients to cut their budgets for advertising and packaged-goods promotions, especially as consumers increasingly redeem coupons.
The company now expects to earn $2.33 per share for the year, down 16 percent from its previous forecast for $2.76 per share. Revenue fell nearly 8 percent to $528.4 million, short of analysts’ consensus forecast for $571.6 million. Costs and expenses fell 7 percent to $479.4 million.
They said they believe marketers will expand their consumer promotion budgets in 2012 to accommodate the increasing redemptions as they have in the past. They are also counseling clients to proactively manage redemption costs by controlling the variables we know influence redemptions, such as coupon face values, coupon durations and multiple purchase requirements.
In other words, the way I read it they want to shorten expiration dates, have more items needed to be purchased to get the coupon discount, and have lower coupon values so that more coupons won’t be used, but they will get the advertising dollars from the manufacturers to extend the monies that are available for coupon promotions. Nice for them, but not the consumer. In the end that stance will doom them just like the mailing the inserts out to homes has soured consumers to them.
In other big news with them the 52 year-old CEO decided to retire at the end of the year. Must be nice. I wonder if he uses coupons…

CHALLENGES
Did you ever wake up an wonder how you’ll get through the day with all the challenges that lie ahead of you. I’m not talking about driving for over three miles with your right blinker on or that humungous talking lesion zit on the side of your head that just won’t go away? I’m talking divorce, losing your job or house, death in the family, kids, friends, or spouse in trouble. When hit with life’s downturns all you can focus on are the issues. Things just seem to be getting worse and worse and you wonder if it will ever get better. It can be financial, emotional, physical, or in any other way.
Some people find vices to numb the pain and help them forget whether it be drinking, shopping, drugs, outbursts, or cheating. The vices are temporary and don’t solve the issue at hand. They almost always make the problem worse. How do you cope?
Everyone goes through challenges. Not everyone responds to them in the same way. There have been many that I thought came at the worst time, but looking back I see they were there for a reason and I think God did so to help me grow. I remember a time when I was in elementary school and I wore snow boots. I forgot to bring in a pair of tennis shoes to change into after I took off my boots. It really freaked me out to just wear socks and no shoes in class. Looking back it was no big deal. Not like my feet stunk or anything or that I had hideous toenails sticking out from holes in my socks. It was just something I wasn’t used to and I needed to cope with it. Life tends to numb these kind of experiences.
Some people give up once they hit a roadblock while some persevere until they accomplish their goal. There have been many people in history that have beat the odds and obstacles only to succeed after numerous failures. Getting through challenges builds character they say. Oprah Winfrey once was told she was “unfit for TV” when she was fired from a reporting job. A newspaper editor fired a young Walt Disney because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. One record label rejected the Beatles after concluding that they “had no future in show business.” We’ve all had people in our lives that didn’t think we were any better than bottom shelf liquor.
One way to cope is to take a step back and take a look at the big picture. Is what you are going through temporary and can it be fixed? What is still good in your life. It’s hard to notice the good when all you can focus on is the bad. Best not to let it overwhelm you as easy as it is to do so. If you think you are about to lose it and slather peanut butter on your head and top it with ping pong balls then maybe it’s time to seek professional help. Always good to have friends and family to talk through the issues. Doing it alone will only put you in a bad place.
Even the Occupy Wall Street folks are having at it since they feel they are at wits end. No jobs and no prospects and the safety net is being pulled from under them. They have nothing to lose. Getting arrested is a way to cope by sending a message to the world.
Interestingly, money doesn’t always solve problems and sometimes makes things worse. Many lottery winners wish they never had won the money. So I stick to getting scratch off tickets. At most I usually win a dollar or a free ticket. I just enjoy scratching off the ticket as for some reason it soothes my nerves even though it makes a mess with all that grit that gets scratched off. I wish I could just scratch off any zits I get. And it would be real cool if I scratch of three I win $20.

CLOSING
Vine & Bean Cafe – Cleveland
Damons – Stores in Mentor, Canton, Twinsburg, Middleburg Heights, Independence, Sandusky, and Stow are now closed. I remember going to the Canton locations around 15 years ago and thought they were the bomb. That changed somewhere along the way as I noticed they just weren’t that great anymore. I noticed their ribs tasted like fish. I thought maybe I got a bad batch, but each time I went back I noticed the same thing. Maybe they were using whale ribs. Once restaurants start cheaping out on their food, they are doomed. Service was horrible too. Another problem is that many people might still have gift cards for Damons. There are still some around with the restaurant in Kent being the closest. As we get closer to the holidays many people buy gift cards as gifts. Fair warning that gift cards can become worthless in these situations. Better to give cash and coupons for the restaurant!
