PINK SLIME
By now I’m sure you’ve heard of the news about the pink slime that grocers use on their beef products. Pink slime is ammonia-treated ground beef filler. Some stores call it by another more palatable name…lean finely textured beef. It’s lean because they whip the fat yuck out of the rest of the yuck. What it reminds me of are those Christmas trees that get spray-painted green to enhance the green-ness of the tree. You know it’s spray-painted because you can see the branches along with the needles get sprayed green.

Those bloated packages that are sealed with meat in them are nasty. I never buy those products. Meats with added broth and enhanced coloring are off my shopping list too. I’m amazed that this hasn’t been brought to the attention of consumers until now. What else are they putting in our food that we don’t know about! I’m half tempted to snatch up some of those pesky chipmunks in the yard and fire up some munk-kabobs. All the whole grain bird seed and nuts that they eat have to be good for me too.

The pink slime has been described as “the cheapest, least desirable beef on offer – fatty sweepings from the slaughterhouse floor, which are notoriously rife with pathogens like E. coli 0157 and antibiotic-resistant salmonella. (Beef Products, Inc. or BPI, the company that makes the pink slime) sends the scraps through a series of machines, grinds them into a paste, separates out the fat, and laces the substance with ammonia to kill pathogens.”

According to a New York Times article, The “majority of hamburger” sold in the U.S. now contained fatty slaughterhouse trimmings “the industry once relegated to pet food and cooking oil,” “typically including most of the material from the outer surfaces of the carcass” that contains “larger microbiological populations.”

Would you be willing to suffer through cancer or some other major illness so that a business can increase their profits? Some examples where harmful chemicals were allowed include BPA in glass bottles, cadmium and lead in products, growth hormones, mercury in fish, toxic chemicals in cigarettes, PCBs, and plenty of others that regulations didn’t catch or allowed initially or still do so. Profits should never be held higher than a human’s health or life for that matter. Some may say regulations cost too much. But so does medically treating people for the sicknesses they get from polluting their bodies, knowingly and unknowingly.

Stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Earth Fare have filled a niche for health conscious shoppers. They sell foods without all the preservatives and added chemicals. The food is more expensive, but the trade-off of staying healthy has made the growth of these type of stores jump.

New labels showing the ingredients of what you buy are great for the health-conscious consumer too. But even politicians fought against those rules because it was an added regulation and cost businesses money of which those businesses paid for some of their campaigns. Shouldn’t they be representing us people and not their campaign coffers. We all need to know what we put into our pie-holes.

MARMITE SHORTAGE
Time to panic. The factory that produces marmite went down with the recent earthquakes in New Zealand. It’s the only place that makes it so none is being produced until the factory comes back online. What is marmite you ask? It is a salty black yeast goo that New Zealanders like to put on a piece of bread. It’s similar to Vegemite that Australians like to eat…remember the Men at Work song lyric…”give them a piece of my Vegemite sandwich.” I guess Americans equivalent would be Spam…or pink slime.

POTATO/POTAWTO
Do you pronounce the word Coupon as COO-pon or Cue-pon? I find myself saying both depending on different factors like how much milk I’ve had for the day. Don’t ask me why. A study found that 57% of people surveyed say it as Cue-pon. A total of 72% of those responding in 36 states, mainly in the Midwest, South amd Northwest say it as Cue-pon. The tops that say it as Coo-pon were in New Mexico, Idaho, Missouri, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Those in the West and Northeast prefered Coo-pon. The highest were in Washington DC, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Rhode Island.

FRUGAL CELEBRITIES
Do celebrities use coupons or are frugal? Why yes they do and are. I found many newscasters use coupons. Everybody needs to save a buck! This story found that stars including Halle Berry, Sarah Michelle Geller, and Hilary Swank are frugal. I think it’s glamorous for a star to use a coupon. I think if they autograph it then the coupon should double!
