EDMUNDS
Get internet quotes for autos from dealerships in the area using Edmunds. Saves a trip to the dealership. I was able to get a lower price doing so when I found a rebate was available in another area by using the free service. I wouldn’t have known had I not used their e-mail quote system. Edmunds empowers automotive consumers by providing complete, clear, accurate and unbiased information needed to make informed purchase and ownership decisions.
They can help show what the car you want to buy really costs the dealership, including invoice pricing.

CAR PURCHASE TIPS
People are hanging onto cars longer to avoid having to buy a new one. If you are in the market to buy a car, the best time to look is when you don’t need one. Reason being, once your car goes kaput you’ll need to find a car quickly and most likely overpay. By shopping for cars before you need one you’ll already have a good feel for the market and can wait to find the best deal.
Here are some car-buying tips:
Negotiate! Be ready to walk away from the deal. Get price quotes from at least three dealerships. Let the dealership know you are price shopping. They will try to keep you there for hours and play the “let me check with my manager” game. The more time you spend there the better the chance that you will buy the car. They know if you walk out the door that most likely you won’t come back. Put pressure on them to put the best deal on the table and be ready to leave if they don’t.
Buy a car at the end of the month when sales managers are trying to meet their monthly quotas. Try Saturday morning when the first salesperson that sells a car for the weekend wins a bonus. Or try Sunday afternoon when the sales manager is trying to meet a weekend quota. Or Mondays when the low foot traffic might entice a car salesman to work harder to get a deal done. The saleperson’s verbal and physical cues should give you an idea whether they are eager to make the sale.
Wait to purchase a car when car companies offer ’employee’ discounts for all consumers. Employee pricing is usually around 10% below invoice. That is the time to get the best deal on popular models.
Negotiate the price of a car first before negotiating a trade-in. Most dealers will low-ball the price they will give you for your trade-in. If you know what your car is worth, you can work your trade-in value up since you already worked out the price of the car. If they don’t meet your price for your car, try selling it on your own to get a better price. Used cars are hard to come by now and demand a premium price.
Dealerships like to get market share from their major competitors. Shop similar models from other carmarkers to see what kind of deals they can offer. Ask for the “conquest” discount that is offered by the manufacturer for switching from a competitor’s brand. The amount can range from $500 to $2,000. If you stick with the same manufacturer ask for the “loyalty” discount.
Find tips and tricks on the best car deals at http://www.beatthecarsalesman.com and http://www.carinfo.com.
Check the background of a used car through http://www.carfax.com, http://www.autocheck.com or http://www.nicb.org/cps/rde/xchg/nicb/hs.xsl/vincheck.html. These sites use a car’s vehicle identification number and give the history of the car for around $25. Knowing the history of your car may save you thousands, especially if you find the car you were going to purchase had major issues with it. Have an independent mechanic or someone you know who is well versed in cars inspect the car.
Car dealers will sell you a car at a certain amount above the invoice cost. If they have factory-to-dealer incentives or other back-end incentives, you can try to get a car $100 above invoice, sometimes less. If the model is popular, then it may be more difficult to get a great deal. Find out what the dealer pays at http://tinyurl.com/EdmundsJoe2013
Don’t buy a new car just because you want one. Be sure you can afford it. Investigate whether you can get a used car instead of buying a new one. Used cars will cost less in taxes and collision insurance.
Search the Internet for a deal and then negotiate a lower price, if possible, and then get a copy of the invoice cost of the car to use when negotiating a price in person at a dealership. Try Edmunds to find the actual price of the car the dealership pays at http://tinyurl.com/EdmundsJoe2013.
Dealer fees are negotiable, including dealer preparation, administrative, advertising, and document fees. Request for the fees to be reduced or eliminated altogether.
Compare models and get price breakdowns of cars before shopping for them. These sites will let you know how much a car will cost at invoice.
Sites to compare car pricing:
http://www.autobrag.com – compiles pricing comparisons from no-haggle dealerships.
http://www.autoweb.com – info on purchasing a car.
http://www.carbargains.com – find the best car deals.
http://www.cardeals.org – insider guide to car purchases – includes factory-to-dealer incentive information and customer rebate programs.
http://www.Edmunds.com – checks the True Market Value and has a True Cost-to-Own calculator.
http://www.jdpower.com – rates cars. Check the site before purchasing a car to find out a certain make and model’s average number of complaints. Plan to spend more on maintenance for cars listed with a high number of complaints.
http://www.Kellybluebook.com or http://www.kbb.com
http://www.nada.com – includes incentives and rebates info, buying and selling tips, and more.
http://www.truecar.com – finds invoice cost with TrueCost figures.
http://www.zag.com – finds the best deal for a new or used car.
Purchase a car at the end of the model year, typically in September, when dealerships try to sell off their previous-model-year cars at major discounts.
Check to see if the car you plan to purchase has available car rebates and incentives. They may also give discounts for newly graduated students. Check these sites for the latest rebates:
http://www.carsdirect.com/research/incentives_search or http://tinyurl.com/EdmundsJoe2013.
At times car makers offer gift cards or checks for test driving their cars. Sometimes they will give the gift card or check without having to test drive the vehicle. Check various auto companies’ web-sites for the offers. Call the dealership to find out if they are offering the deals too.
Financing is a way for dealers to throw out a ‘comfortable’ monthly payment, keeping the buyer from negotiating a better price. Start with negotiating the price of the car and then work out the financing. From there you can negotiate your finance interest rate and monthly payment.
Find the price of the car that the dealership pays after dealer incentives, holdbacks, or rebates called the “CR Bottom Line Price” on the Consumer Reports New Car Price Reports and found at http://www.consumerreports.org. Holdbacks are given to the dealership after the care is sold and is about 2% or 3% of either the invoice or sticker price. A dealership can sell at invoice and still make a profit on holdbacks and dealer cash. Remember that when negotiating a price.
Cars models change every so many years. Typically the changes are minor, however if there are some major changes, they may have more issues. Wait until year two of a model change before considering the car, if possible.
If you want to buy a used car, look at purchasing one from someone who is planning to buy a new car and therefore planning to trade in their old car. There is a good chance you will offer them more than the dealership.
If you lease a car, make sure the estimated number of miles driven annually is at least the number of miles you typically drive per year. Paying for additional miles usually costs around 18 to 21 cents a mile. Better to overestimate.
Buying a car as opposed to leasing is usually cheaper if you plan to keep the purchased car long term. To find out if leasing is a good option over buying a car, go to http://www.leasecompare.com or http://www.checkbook.org under LeaseWire. If you need to get out your car lease, check out http://www.leasetrader.com or http://www.swapalease.com to find folks that may want to take on your lease.
According to AAA, in 2008 the average cost of owning and driving a car 15,000 miles a year was $7,830. SUVs are even more costly, at $9,900 per year. In 2009, it costs $9,158 to own a car a year on average, according to AAA. That includes all costs of ownership such as gas, insurance, maintenance, registration, financing, taxes depreciation, and more. If you can’t afford these costs, look for ways to reduce your car expenses such as taking the bus, carpooling, biking, and walking to where you need to go.
After deciding to purchase a car, don’t get caught up in the ‘extras’ that are negotiated after agreeing to purchase it. Salespeople prey on the concerns of a new car owner. Once you’ve made the decision to buy the car, the dealership knows that you are more likely to agree to add-on options. Be ready to say no. Find out what the actual price of the options are before sitting down to finalize the deal. Rustproofing isn’t usually necessary since vehicle bodies are already treated to protect against rust. Upholstery is typically treated at the factory and if you want to add more protection, buy your own can of spray-on fabric protectant. Paint sealants and waxes are available for purchase for under $15 and can be applied by the car-owner. It also might be cheaper to have a car touched up after a few years versus the cost of the paint protection. A VIN, vehicle identification number, can be etched into a windshield for security reasons by the car-owner with a do-it-yourself kit for around $25. The ‘extras’ are expensive and marked up at a high rate. Instead decide if you really need to get any of these.
CAR INSURANCE TIPS
Shop around for your car insurance. When was the last time you shopped around for insurance? Rates may have increased beyond going market rates. You may be paying a lot more than necessary. Find out from people you know who they use and if they like them. Find sample car insurance rates at http://www.insurance.ohio.gov/consumer/ocs/Pages/OCS or http://www.carinsurance.com.
Some car insurance companies like Progressive are offering discounts of up to 25% to have an electronic car ‘diary’ monitor installed to review how safely you are driving.
If you don’t drive very far to work, you may qualify for additional discounts from your car insurance provider.
CAR MAINTENANCE TIPS
I needed an oil change recently. I had the dealership price match an oil change and tire rotation for $16.99. Normally it would’ve cost me around $50 at the dealership. All I had to do is show them the coupon that I had from a ValPak mailer. That easy!
Many gas stations charge 50 to 75 cents to fill your tires with air. Some, although not many, don’t charge fees. When you take your car in for repairs or an oil change have them check and fill the air in your tires for free. If you buy gas at a gas station ask if you can get the air for free. Conrad’s Tire stores don’t charge for air.
Keep a folder of car maintenance coupons in a pouch in your car. Should your car need an emergency repair, you’ll have easy access to money-saving coupons.
Check Consumer Reports to find out which cars are the most reliable; avoid those that are unreliable and thus costly to repair.
Do easy car maintenance repairs yourself like replacing wiper blades, air filters, and headlight bulbs. You can save hundreds of dollars over the lifetime of the car.
Purchasing a car that has low maintenance and repair cost can save a substantial amount of money over the life of a car. Check Edmunds to see the most expensive and least expensive cars to maintenance and repair. Make sure you are getting a fair price quoted to you for repairs at http://www.repairpal.com.
After a car is out of warranty, plan on spending on average at least $1,000 in annual maintenance costs. If the cost of maintaining your car is less than a monthly car payment it may be worth keeping it instead of replacing it with a new or used car. Find out the price for an extended warranty at http://tinyurl.com/AutoWarranties2013
To find a good repair shop go to http://www.cartalk.com or http://www.repairpal.com. Also ask friends and family who they would recommend. Verify the mechanic and shop has ASE certification (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). Dealerships repair shops tend to charge around $100 an hour for repairs while independent shops charge around $70.
Check your car owner’s manual for the car’s maintenance schedule. Some shops may pressure you to get maintenance that is not due or even needed.
Get estimates from multiple repair shops to make sure they aren’t charging you for unnecessary repairs and aren’t charging more than the going rates. Check to see if they are AskPatty certified, meaning they are female friendly.
For deals on tires check http://www.tirerack.com, http://www.treaddepot.com, http://www.4quicktires.com, http://www.onlinetires.com, http://www.townfairtire.com, or http://www.discounttires.com. Print the cost of the tire from the site and have a local dealership or car tire shop price match it. You’ll need to have someone install the tires if you have them shipped to you.
Be sure to do your due diligence on auto warranty companies. There have been some that have gone out of business, leaving the customer with no options. Getting your warranty through the manufacturer via the dealership is less risky than going through a third-party company with no connections to the manufacturer.
If you plan on purchasing an extended warranty, negotiate a lower price with the dealership. Extended warranties are negotiable. If the car you are buying was higher on the unreliability scale in Consumer Reports, it might be worth getting an extended warranty. Compare the prices at the dealership with the prices at http://tinyurl.com/AutoWarranties2013 .

TARGET
Many Target stores in the area were remodeled. They added a bigger food section with fresh produce. I checked out the produce prices and cats alive! …their prices stunk. I saw 24 cents by the banana section and thought that was a good price, but that was for EACH banana which means it’s more like 50 cents/lb. The apples were way over-priced along with everything else. Bad prices for produce just like Wal-mart. I didn’t see anything on sale. Aldi’s, Discount Drug Mart, Marc’s and Sav-a-lot beat the pants off them on produce pricing, especially Aldi’s on their sale items.
I do like shopping at Target for their clearance items. They had some good clearance deals on some car wash items. Summer items like swimming goggles are 75% off too.
HOMECOMING 2013
Having a foreign exchange daughter I’m finding out a lot more of the goings-on at high school. The other weekend was Homecoming. Apparently some of the Homecomings have taken a page out of Miley Cyrus’s book and it’s an all-out twerk and grinding fest. I remember the days of high school dances where you had nothing but hands straight out like Frankenstein keeping a distance from each other enough to fit a kickball or two between us.
So we’ve gone from Footloose where just dancing was forbidden to “pardon my dust” on my prudeness, but now it’s Dirty Dancing former Disney star style. What’s a shy kid to do? Ladies and Gentlemen need not apply. Time to get the garden hose out and make sure these kids cool their jets. I know some schools don’t allow it so I’d think they’d all follow that rule.
They even gave breathalizers to each student before they are allowed to enter. Back when I went to school the only breathe that was checked was your own to make sure it didn’t stink like an old sock filled with blue cheese. Wow, have things changed.
All the foreign exchange kids agree that what they saw was “disturbing”. I think they should only allow the students to do the Jitterbug and that’s it.
