LEAP DAY DEALS
It’s 2020 and that means it’s time for a Leap Day on February 29th! It happens every 4 years. However, usually every 100 years it’s skipped. It’s to true up the time earth rotates around it’s axis around the sun which is a bit more than 365 days, a full year. If there wasn’t a Leap Day, over time, summer would happen in winter months.

Here are some Leap Day deals:

SIGNS AND SOUNDS
I noticed recently that on a Marc’s sign in front of the store it used a leaf for an apostrophe. A subtle look that makes people think they are “green”.

You’ll also notice that most signs are in red or red and yellow. That’s to draw attention with bright colors. You rarely see signs in drab colors like brown or gray. Some of the biggest companies use red and yellow – McDonald’s, Denny’s, Shell, Lay’s etc.

If you never noticed this, it’s by design. The signs catch the attention of your subconscious. You are drawn to them and don’t even know it!

Same goes for the name of products. For instance, Arm & Hammer sounds like a strong product that will work well. In reality, it was named after a person, Armand Hammer. What most people don’t know is that he had close ties to the Soviet Union. The Arm & Hammer logo even looks similar to the sickle and hammer logo the Russians use.

Sounds work the same way. Many news programs use a short stanza (almost like an alarm) or bell to get your attention on breaking news. Your senses are heightened with the sound and then look forward to the “rewards”. It’s like Pavlov’s dog. A doctor named Pavlov would ring a bell before feeding his dogs. The dogs would salivate when they would hear the bell. They became conditioned to associate the bell with food. It’s just like the news shows get your attention with news of interest with a sound. You probably don’t drool at the sound, but you know you are getting fed something!

Weekly Deals from Walgreens

GIANT EAGLE ENDS DOUBLES AGAIN!
Starting March 1st, Giant Eagle will end double coupons! Again! The first time they ended it years ago they brought them back after much backlash from Northeast Ohio consumers.

Needless to say, I will be reducing my shopping at Giant Eagle. After they closed two local stores they made it harder to shop there. Now the new rules will save consumers less money. They are now even with stores that don’t double. Dave’s Supermarket and Buehler’s still double, so I will look to shift some of my shopping to Dave’s Supermarket as there are some nearby. Doubles made Giant Eagle stand out in a crowded grocery market. Not anymore.

Not only that, if you earn less than 50 Fuelperks in a month, your perks will be reset to zero at the end of that month. So you will have to get your gas at GetGo gas stations using your Fuelperks each month or they will be lost. Read the new Perks policy at: https://www.gianteagle.com/fuelperks-plus

I posted on their Facebook page and their reply made no sense. They said:
Customer usage of manufacturer coupons continues to decrease both in our stores and across the grocery industry. With only a fraction of manufacturer coupons qualifying for doubling, the majority of customers never realized savings through this program. We instead will be focusing on other ways to enhance savings opportunities for customers, and look forward to sharing more details in the near future. Recognizing that many customers rely on coupons as one of the ways they save in our stores, Giant Eagle customers will continue to be able to redeem coupons in-store at face value. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Then why get rid of them if there are so few using coupons that double? Why upset loyal coupon shoppers when doubling isn’t much of a hit on their bottom line? Part of the reason people aren’t saving as much using coupons is because you have so many limits on how many can be used! And it’s inconvenient that I can’t save as much money now? Tell that to a family that will get less groceries for their kids because they can’t save as much. They obviously didn’t think through their reasoning.

I get that stores need to make a profit and grocery stores run on very thin margins. However, if you get rid of doubles because you are touting you have ecoupons – so does every other grocery store! Sure, there are other unique ways to save at Giant Eagle, but you just made one of them tougher to use by forcing customers to use their Gas Perks to the point some customers will lose the Perks they earned! Not to mention your Perks point program is confusing. How much is 50 Perks worth? What’s 2X Perks worth?

Many other stores have gotten rid of doubles, including Kroger and most of its affiliates. Recently, Kroger’s Milwaukee-based Roundy’s division, which includes the chains Pick ‘n Save, Copps, Mariano’s and Metro Market, will no longer offer double coupons.

Doubling debuted in the 70’s and stopped for a couple decades before returning again at the height of couponing around 2000. Coupon usage has waned since the Extreme Couponing show debuted and caused stores to tighten up their coupon rules. There are less coupons available (especially on food items), shorter expiration dates, and tighter rules on coupons themselves, including the limit of one coupon allowed per purchase. It’s no wonder people are getting turned off by coupons. However, you can still get freebies or close to free items using coupons at area stores, so the allure is still there.

Wal-mart even tested double coupons in Madison many years ago. There might be a time when double coupons will be a trend again!

With Giant Eagle we’ll be hearing they lowered prices. We all know how that works. They lower them, blitz ads about it and then they increase the prices months later only to repeat it again the next year. In the Cleveland area people know Marc’s has good everyday low prices, although they were better years ago. You’ll find their everyday prices are lower than Giant Eagle, but they don’t have sales. Giant Eagle has some good sales, but their everyday prices can be high and many people don’t shop there for that reason.

With Meijer’s new to the market people are going there. Giant Eagle also closed some Cleveland stores along with Willoughby Hills and moved one in Mentor close to another store. They have closed stores in other markets, including exiting the Toledo market. Fresh Thyme, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Lucky’s Market, Sav-a-Lot and Sweet Berry are just some of the new stores to the area since Giant Eagle established itself after buying Stop-n-Shop. Aldi is also building new stores everywhere. So Giant Eagle’s market share is shrinking.

Giant Eagle tried to enter the “no frills” Aldi-like stores by opening Valu King/Good Cents. They faltered when they didn’t offer double coupons and were just a cheap version of Giant Eagle, including their bakery and meats section. It didn’t ooze quality and prices weren’t much different than a regular Giant Eagle. Aldi is at least trying to offer quality foods with a good organic and non-“chemicaled” foods. People know that food has become “manufactured” and they are trying to stay away from any place that doesn’t promote healthy offerings.

However, Aldi doesn’t take coupons, so why shop there? Well, 90% of what they sell are store brand items. So it’s hard to even find items they sell that match up with a coupon. They fit a niche of low priced produce and dairy that draws shoppers. That’s pretty much all I buy there. Produce and dairy rarely have coupons available for those items too, so it makes sense to find everyday low prices on those items.

Read their new Giant Eagle coupon policy here: https://account.gianteagle.com/policies

Clevelanders are very frugal and can sniff out deals, so they will have a critical eye on Giant Eagle’s move. Many shoppers will stop shopping there altogether now that they got rid of doubles. So it’s time to shop Buehlers and Dave’s Supermarket as they still double coupons of .99 and less and check out other stores. Here are links to their ads:

Here’s a story on the change:

No more Happy Hour in Ibiza! Spain has decided to curb alcohol consumption by banning happy hours, trips on party boats, alcohol-selling machines, shops selling alcohol in the areas at certain times and pub crawls in Magaluf, Ibiza and parts of Palma. The new law bans ‘balconing’ – jumping from hotel balconies into swimming pools.

Fines for those who break the new laws could range from $6,500 to $650,000. Those happy hours would then turn into unhappy years.

DOWN UNDER TRIP CONTINUED
This story is a continuation from last weeks blog about our trip to Australia and cruise over to New Zealand.

We met a lot of great people from all over the world on the trip. Luckily, none from the Wuhan province in China. One couple from Dallas, we had dinner with a couple times. He surprised us with a poem near the end of the cruise that he wrote about us, mostly about us from what he gleaned listening to us. It wasn’t about how we had food dropping out of our mouths during dinner, but about how nice we are (we fooled them!) and what we did in our lives from work to hosting. And no, he wasn’t drunk or a creeper.

Another great couple we met from Australia taught us about Australian slang words. Bustin to go to the Dunny means you had to go to the bathroom. Dead Set Wanker means an idiot. Apparently there is consensus in Australia who is one in the U.S. They also don’t say Australia. It’s more like ‘Straya’.

DSC_0337

When the coronavirus issue was peaking in the news they made some changes on the ship. Around half-way into the cruise we could no longer serve ourselves in the cafeteria. The workers had to serve us, including coffee and water. They were also more vigilent about ‘washy, washy’. It was what they would say when they would spray your hands with disinfectant when you would go to the cafeteria. All cruise ships do it because they know how nasty people can be not washing their hands, especially after going to the bathroom.

Coming back from New Zealand I expected to see a ton of people wearing masks, but there weren’t that many. With customs they asked if you had been to mainland China in the past 14 days.

DSC_0212

On the ship they had an ABBA tribute band. Very fitting as we are both ABBA fans. The one singer, Hollie Cavanaugh, was on American Idol and finished fourth the year Philip Philips won. Another one, Candace Glover, had her own show on the ship and she was winner of season 12.

One thing to try while on cruises is their raffles. They usually raffle jewelry, artwork, or spa credits. A few are on the first day of the cruise and those give you the best chances to win because people may enter, but get busy since they just got on the ship or forget to show up for the raffle in which you need to be present to win. My wife won a $75 credit for the spa.

I didn’t win anything in the raffles. The casino either…until almost at the end of the cruise. I use the casino as entertainment and don’t expect to win anything. When I win more than what I started with I usually cash out. Keeps me from losing all the money even though it’s not as fun and I don’t play for long at times. I try to get a sense of a good machine. I saw one and stopped at it. Then I went around to see if anything else was giving me a good vibe. I then came back to the original machine.

I put in $20 into a slot machine and max bet it. Max betting can be expensive and you may only play a few pulls of the lever, but they can win you lots more. Each bet was $5. First one nothing. Second one it hit and it be-bopped and got me some bonus spins. I saw 9 something and figured I won around $10 which I though was pretty lame for a $5 bet. Then I realized it might be more when I saw it showed something like nine hundred something and change so I cashed out to see what the amount really was. The ticket spits out and I turn it around and sure enough, it was for $991! Yay for me! We’re back in black! I’ve never won that much money. Usually it’s a $20 scratch-off ticket winner. I’ll use if for college for the kids or braces or to pay fines. Oh wait, I don’t have kids or want braces again and don’t owe any fines. I’ll use part of it to get 32 tubes of toothpaste for almost free instead.

DSC_0174

After leaving Tasmaina which is a state in Australia we made our way to New Zealand. It took two days at sea to get there. Our first glimpse of New Zealand were a handful of sounds, Dusky, Milford and Doubtful. They said even though they were named sounds they are really fiords. Amazing views of cascading waterfalls. The area was used to film the Lord of the Rings.

Then we went to ports in Napier to do a winery tour in Malborough, New Zealand’s premiere wine region producing some of the best Sauvignon Blancs in the world. Spy Valley Winery had some nice wines and views. There and many other places we met people, especially the wineries, from the states that relocated to New Zealand. Most were on work visas, but some eventually relocated permanently.

DSC_0659

In Dunedin we took a tour. Saw the world’s steepest street. Also walked up it. Man, was that rough. Felt like I was walking straight up the side of a building. At a nearby beach we came across a pregnant New Zealand sea loin.

DSC_0870

In Christchurch we saw the damage from a couple big earthquakes this past decade. The earthquake caused liquification of the ground causing much of the city to be damaged extensively. Many of the churches were still in ruin and being restored.

DSC_0907

We went punting there. No, not kicking a football, but it’s what they call taking a canoe up and down a river. It’s the same as a Gondola ride. Great views.

Found a great deal on t-shirts. The funny thing is that it was the end of summer clearance sale. Yes, when it’s winter here it’s summer there. It was only $5 for the shirt and with the exchange rate it made it around $3.50.

DSC_0262

In Turanga we visited a Maori (native people of New Zealand) house of worship. Then we went to a high school where students performed cultural dances, including ones where they made faces and stuck out their tongue. They asked for volunteer for a Poi dance (Poi look like puffy dumplings on strings used with the dances) for the women and I asked one of the girls to pick my wife. She did and that meant I had to do it when it was the guys turn. I did the one where we stomp and make faces and stick my tongue out of which comes naturally for me.

We went to the beach when we got back. Man, was the water cold in spots. I snorkeled and saw a huge stingray, at least 5 foot across. Another area I saw tons of bat rays in shallow water.

DSC_0372

Off the coast of Turanga is White Island, or more infamously know as the volcano that recently erupted and killed people visiting it on an excursion from a cruise ship. It was about 100 miles from shore. I didn’t see any plumes of smoke from it. I could imagine the fear of the people on the island thinking how cool it was to be so close to a volcano and then seconds later running for their lives. When you are on vacation you never think you will be in harms way.

Years ago in Hawaii we were on an excursion on the Big Island and we walked through a dormant volcano field and through old lava tubes. Not far from there was an active volcano that at the time was spewing lava into the ocean. You could see it from the ship and it glowed at night. To think the situation wasn’t all that different.

DSC_0153

In Picton we rented bikes to visit wineries. I figured it was maybe 5 miles or so, but they said the route was around 40 kilometers. I asked what that was in miles and he said around 25 miles. Woah. We were short on time, so we went fast and luckily it was flat. A couple we met on the cruise saw us and said they noticed how fast we were going. On part of the trail we came across a mulch processing plant. It smelled horrible, so that made us peddle faster.

We made a stop at McDonalds for a quick bite to eat. And yes, the Big Mac there tasted like Big Macs at home.

We stopped at a few wineries and bought a couple bottles. We found Church Bay Winery had the best wine of all the wineries we visited in New Zealand. On the way back we had to ride our bikes under a bridge where the bike path was flooded about a foot of water from high tide.

DSC_0589

In Auckland we made a trip to Waiheke island via a ferry for a winery tour with tics I got from Groupon. The wineries had the most stunning views and landscaping. The ferry tics we got online on their site at a discount at https://www.fullers.co.nz.

The one guy serving us at one of the wineries said how bad the drought was there. He said he is just about out of water (they have to purchase water to put into their tanks) and he plans to stop washing his hair and bath in the ocean. Hmmm. No.

DSC_0528

Our last stop was in Auckland. The harbor had some nice bars and restaurants. Some had some great happy hour deals. One place had a pizza for $10 (or $7 in USD) that was great and that was an everyday price.

While in Auckland I got a haircut! Instead of my usual Best Cuts/Great Clips visit I went to a shop in downtown Auckland. She did a great job. I’m just glad she didn’t skiff the side of my head with a big bald spot. Not knowing how good or bad she was had my heart racing, but in the end I’d go back to her. Just a little pricey to fly back there for a haircut.

DSC_0489

We spoke to our taxi driver about things in New Zealand. He said the minimum wage was $15 for kids and $18 for adults and he said that’s partly why there are less homeless and thefts there.

There is also no tipping. You can, but it’s not expected. The taxi driver asked us why the U.S. tips and I told him how low the minimum wage was at $7.25 an hour and that tipping makes up for the low wages as restaurant workers get paid even less.

Some restaurants charged a surcharge. It’s kind of a forced tip. Usually it was 10% or 15% of the bill. Very few did, but more do on national holidays.

There is an Entertainment book for New Zealand. It cost $69.99 for one year or $119.99 for one year for multiple countries (Australia, New Zealand and Bali). You can find it at: https://www.entertainmentbook.co.nz/

DSC_0454

Prices were high on most everything in New Zealand. The pic above shows Ben & Jerry’s ice cream pint for over $14! Being in the middle of the Pacific doesn’t help with getting items on the cheap.

Coupons are not used much. There are no coupon inserts in newspapers. I did find one coupon on a cereal jar that I used.

There were coupons in the tourist magazines you find at the hotels and airport. Most were for entertainment, but there were some for restauarants.

I had my cell phone turned off the whole trip (I don’t have a smartphone). If anyone had to get a hold of me, they could via e-mail (I had my laptop and a tablet). The unlimited e-mail package was expensive though at $234 after discounts. We got free wi-fi in spots at different ports or we used our free wi-fi minutes I got from the cruiseline. Usually, they offer deals for wi-fi later into the cruise. Not on this trip. My right arm thanked me for not being on the computer so much.

One site helped with finding out transportation options. At https://www.rome2rio.com it showed the times and all to take a bus, ferry, car, train, or walk to a destination.

On the flight back the stewardess said that there was fog in San Francisco so we had to go in a holding pattern and that we may have to divert to San Jose. Not what I wanted to hear. Two minutes later she said we would land in San Fran. Whew! Another flight disaster averted.

The flights there and back are nearly 30 straight hours each of being awake, at the airport or on the plane. We transitioned quick since we stayed up during daylight hours when we got there. Coming back was tough. My brain still feels like it’s somewhere in the Pacific. Now if I can only figure out a way to transport my physical body to meet up with it I can probably land in Hawaii somewhere.

GIANT EAGLE ENDING DOUBLE COUPONS AGAIN!

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

Weekly Deals from Walgreens

GIANT EAGLE ENDS DOUBLES AGAIN!
Starting March 1st, Giant Eagle will end double coupons! Again! The first time they ended it years ago they brought them back after much backlash from Northeast Ohio consumers. Read their coupon policy here: https://account.gianteagle.com/policies

DOWN UNDER TRIP
We decided to go on a trip of a lifetime. Australia and New Zealand was always a destination we wanted to go to. We finally did. I’ll post about the trip through Australia this week and the New Zealand portion next week.

I planned the trip more than a year before we went. I wanted to build it around a cruise so that we could see as much of the area as possible. One of the cruises I found started in Australia, stopped in Tasmania and then bopped around New Zealand. Most cruises don’t stop in Tasmania or start in Australia and end in New Zealand, so that was the clincher for booking it.

The cruise was for 12 days. We would start in Sydney and then go to Eden and Melbourne. From there we would go to Burnie, Tasmania. In New Zealand the ports were in Dunedin, Akaroa, Picton (Marlborough), Napier, Tauranga, and Auckland.

The cruise was with Norwegian. They are ok, but I prefer Royal Caribbean. I’ve done Carnival too, but I wasn’t impressed with them.

DSC_0105

A close-up of the tiles on the Sydney Opera House.

We booked the cruise through Vacationstogo.com. Norwegian was offering freebies with the cruise. We got the free drink package, $50 off at each port for excursions, and 250 minutes of free wi-fi. We got a balcony to enjoy the views right from our room. An inside cabin was super cheap, dropping to around $450 as we got closer to the cruise date, but for a 12 day cruise I wanted to enjoy it.

The hotels I booked through Hotels.com a year before we stayed. I checked for better deals through the year and nothing popped up. I used codes (that I post on my blog) to get an additional percentage off. Plus I used Hotels.com gift cards I bought at Rite Aid and Giant Eagle that earned me BonusCash and Fuelperks respectively.

DSCF5080

We booked the Primus hotel in Sydney. I booked it a year before we stayed and the price just went up after that by nearly $100. It was a highly rated hotel (I book hotels according to guest reviews) that included an awesome free buffet breakfast. It’s where they had Vegemite, a salty spread, that we tried for the first time. Umm, yucky. Yep, from the song by Men at Work – He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich

DSC_0018

Winter in Cleveland, Summer down under.

The flight to Sydney was expensive. I got alerts from Farecompare.com that let me know when rates would go up or down for the flight. After seeing the fluctuations of the top and low end of the fares, I knew about what price would be best for me to book it at. It hit $862 one day and that was the lowest I saw, so we booked it. Good thing because I never saw it go lower than that price.

We would fly back from Auckland and we had enough points for both of us to get free flights on that portion. We got the points from opening up a credit card with United. I was a little short on points, so when they had a sale on purchasing points I bought some more. They offered a bonus amount buying some. The problem was I still had to wait for the points to get into my account and I was worried that the points I needed to fly from New Zealand would jump. About two weeks went by before I got the points and luckily the redemption amount didn’t change.

Lots of airline credit cards offer points of 50,000 or more for opening an account. You have to spend a certain amount over, typically, three months for the points to be earned. Find which credit cards offer points deals at creditcards.com or ThePointsguy.com.

DSC_0189

During the time I had the trip booked, another deal popped up. I got an alert from that I could fly to Sydney for $641 roundtrip! It was in November. Great deal, but we stuck with our original trip. Flights to Australia are usually, at minimum, $2,000 roundtrip.

We got some Australian and New Zealand cash to have on hand. The exchange rate was better than it had been years ago. You can find the exchange rates at https://www.xe.com. We got the cash at Huntington bank. They charge an $8 flat fee to exchange and that is great. You’ll get raked exchanging cash at an airport, so we got some from the bank ahead of time. Some banks also charge a lot of fees, but not Huntington.

DSC_0789

As the trip got closer we saw the news reports of fires across Australia. I figured it was the typical wildfires they get during the summer. Boy, was I wrong. The whole country was engulfed in fires. Smoke was everywhere. Over 1 billion animals had died. So very sad. The fires didn’t deter us. Oddly, most of our trips end up having natural disasters or other events before, during or after our trips. So don’t plan trips around us!

To do the trip we had to make sure we had some buffer time at the beginning of the trip. We were leaving in January and while it is summer in Australia, we still have to deal with leaving Cleveland in the winter. We were leaving on a Saturday and get there on Monday with all the time zone changes and time to get there.

A winter storm was going across the country the day we left. Our plane originated in Boston in the morning with a stop in Washington DC. The weather showed the storm would pretty much miss those cities when the planes were there. However, our trip started out horribly.

It was a snowy, rainy and icy day on the day we left. We kept checking to see if the flight was on schedule and it was. We get to the airport and I see the flight says it’s on time. Great! …or so I thought.

All of a sudden, the trips showed delayed 20 minutes. Ok, that’s fine. We have a 3 hour layover in Houston, so we have plenty of time…or so I thought.

Delay after delay popped up. It said there were maintenance issues with the plane in DC. Not good as that usually means the flight will get cancelled. We were supposed to leave at 3:00, but the plane took off at 5:45. Now we have minutes to catch our flight to Australia, if any at all. Plus, we land in the A terminal and we have to get to the E terminal on the other side of the airport via a tram and go to the furthest gate. Just in case we can still make the flight we get the flight agent to move our seats to the front of plane.

The Captain said our flight will take 3 hours and 15 minutes and the Sydney flight leaves at 8:25. We have 15 minutes maybe, but they usually close the doors before the flight departure time and this flight said it will be 8:10.

We start boarding the plane. The flight attendant, of all people, is blocking us from getting in. A few people start yelling at her to get her attention and she ignores everyone. Finally, she moves.

We start pulling out of the gate. Then as we are pulling out of the gate the Captain says there was a scratch on the plane and they have to have it inspected and written up, so add 15 or 20 minutes before we take off. Really! They say the flight will land at 8:00 and take 10 minutes to taxi. Our flight ends boarding at 8:10. We’re screwed. Or are we?

So now we have to stress out about catching our flight to Australia, which takes over 17 hours from Houston. Will they wait for us? Will they transfer our luggage in time? Maybe with everyone else delayed they may wait for them too or was that all wishful thinking on my part?

The flight lands at 7:56. The Captain then announces that we have to wait for a plane to pull out of the gate before we can disembark. You gotta be kidding me. It was a 3 hour flight and they didn’t get the gate ready for us knowing we have a ton of people close to missing their flights. It feels like forever for the plane to leave the gate. I’m thinking there is no way we make the flight. The flight agents said international flights leave on time. All I can hope for is for the plane to be late boarding people. I pretty much resigned myself to taking a flight the next day. We spoke with enough of the agents to find out they would give us a hotel and fly us to San Fran in the morning and then take a 11:00 PM flight to Sydney. Another long day. Ugh. I kept praying.

I figured we would sprint through the airport and give it a good college try. I prep my wife to get her way to the front of the plane to get out. I told her I would take the two carry-ons that weigh 30 lbs each and run with them. Plane stops. Game on.

She bolts out. I juke around some people running with the bags. My wife yells out for where the tram is. People point the way. We’re getting funny looks. We have to run upstairs. We run up the escalators. The tram is there. The door is starting to close. I yell, “Go through it and hold it!”. She biffs into the door. An announcement comes up saying the doors are obstructed. We get in along with a few other people trying to catch flights. One guy said how strong my wife was pushing the door open.

We’re both panting trying to catch our breath. We stop at terminal B …terminal C …terminal D and E is next, our stop.

The doors open. We run out. We have to make quick reads of all the signs. Left terminal E. Run down the escalators. Left for terminal E gates. I’m still running with bags and I’m beat. Before the trip I said to my wife to swap out the one carry-on for a swivel wheel one. I finally realize now I know why my sixth sense told me to do so. I drop the bags on the floor and am now able to full sprint. I mean I am putting OJ Simpson running through airports to shame. I am hunched over and low to the ground. I know every second counts, so I am flying. Gate E18 right. I accidentally run through the restaurant area.

There are silver grids on the floor up ahead that are raised and I can’t lose speed even though they might cause me to crash. I fly over them. We are getting close to our gate. I start yelling, “ Hold Australia, Hold Australia!”. I see nobody as we get close. My heart sinks.

Just as I get close enough there are agents there and another gal panting for her breath. They say they were waiting for us. What!? You mean our flight attendants couldn’t tell us they would wait for us! Time: 8:17. We made it.

We get on board and people are looking at us as we are panting like crazy. We get to our seats. The door closes. Time: 8:23 Thank you God!

I’ve never been on such a roller-coaster for a flight. All I know is my adrenaline is on full power and I’m waiting for the hives to kick in. I don’t know if our checked luggage will make it, but that I can deal with. We made it and that’s all I care about. We had planned to use a couple United passes I had in Houston, but now we will use them on the way back.

I didn’t realize it until after we landed. I only got up once on the 17 hour flight. I had two beers too (beer and wine are free on international flights). My body’s irrigation system must have been working well. Legs were ok too. I was probably so spent after the sprint that my body just wanted to chill.

I pulled up some Happy Hour sites for Australia and New Zealand. It came in handy as restaurant prices were high at most places. We even got 10 cent wings at the BeerHaus. Check all the deals here:

One of the best ones I found was to Fratelli Fresh, an Italian restaurant. We had to sign up to their loyalty program and show them the e-mail that we joined in which they give us a key-ring. We get the key-ring and with it we get 50% off our whole bill on Mondays. We got there Monday and took full advantage of it.

The price of everything was good because for every U.S. dollar we get around $1.45 in Australian currency. In essence, everything was around 30% off.

We used a credit card that didn’t charge foreign transaction fees. Otherwise, it would have added another 2% to 3% on every charge.

Would you believe Woolworth’s are all over Australia. In Tasmania we came across a K-Mart and Target.

DSC_0659

Prices were high. A dozen eggs were $3.99 on up. A 20 ounce Coke was $3.70. Halo Top or Ben & Jerry’s pint was $14. Restaurant meals were usually $20 to $35. Again, figure in the 30% discount with the exchange rate and the prices were better. We got packaged sushi for $10 that really was $7 in U.S. dollars. Not bad.

Sydney Harbor Bridgewalk

We purchased tickets for a bridgewalk over the Sydney Harbor bridge in Sydney on viator.com. We would walk halfway through the innards of the bridge that overlooked the Sydney Harbor. They said 6 million rivets were used on the bridge.

We used the city bus for a cheap ride to Bondi Beach.

Our first cruise stop was to Eden. The city was evacuated a couple weeks before we got there due to wildfires and cruiseships stopped going there. We were the first ship to visit.

On the way there I woke up to the strong smell of smoke. It was as if there was a campfire in the room. It wasn’t on fire, but instead from nearby fires on the coast.

Between Eden and Melbourne there were tons of fires visible from the ship. Everything was hazy in the area. Recent rains helped put out some of them.

In Eden we did an oyster excursion. They showed how they harvested prized Sydney Rock oysters. It takes around 5 years to harvest them. They were delicious.

In Melbourne we had to cancel our trip to the wineries because the ship changed the time we were in port. The site said we were to be there at 8 am, but it wasn’t right we found out and got there around noon. It was such a disappointment. We complained to management and they agreed to give us a $200 onboard credit because their site had the wrong info.

Melbourne was holding the Australian Open Tennis event. We got to the entrance and we could have gotten tickets for around $60, but we didn’t have enough time to go.

Melbourne was very built up downtown, kinda reminded me of a mini New York as it was a bit older and rough around parts. Large river that reminded of San Antonio’s RiverWalk with restaurants and bars.

From there we went to Tasmania. We went to a wildlife park. Got some great video of a bunch of Tasmanian Devils being fed a wombat leg. They had a tug-of-war with it. I can see how they got their inspiration for the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character.

DSC_0058

At the park we were also able to feed and pet kangaroos! My wife was even able to pet a baby kangaroo in it’s mother’s pouch. The worker there said that it was ok and the mother didn’t mind it at all.

Next week I will blog about the New Zealand portion of the trip. Also about how the coronavirus affected the trip.
