CRIME DROPS
Good news on the crime front. Although it seems like crime has risen with all the sensational TV coverage of crime and hooligans, crime has actually dropped significantly. Violent crime dropped by more than 15% in the United States during the first three months of 2024, according to statistics released by the FBI.
Total crimes in Cleveland are down nearly 7% from last spring. Breaking down the figures, homicides are down more than 46%, burglaries dropped more than 18%, grand theft motor vehicles dipped more than 18%, and robberies are down 6%.
Nationally, violent crime from January to March dropped 15.2% compared to the same period in 2023, while murders fell 26.4% and reported rapes decreased by 25.7%. Aggravated assaults decreased during that period when compared to last year by 12.5%, according to the data, while robberies fell 17.8%. Property crime went down 15.1%. Burglaries dropped 16.7%. Motor vehicle theft decreased by 17.3%.
Compared to the first five months of 2023, murders this year have dropped more than 40% in cities including New Orleans, Seattle, Boston, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, according to the research firm AH Datalytics. Of the 265 cities analyzed there was a 19% drop in murders nationwide compared to 2023. The US murder rate continues to drop at a high rate and could be headed for its largest annual decline ever.
It’s in stark contrast to 2020 when FBI figures showed the number of homicides increased nearly 30% from 2019 to 2020, the largest single-year increase since the FBI began tracking these crimes in the 1960s. Violent crime during the same period increased by 5%.
GIANT DISAPPOINTMENT
This past week Giant Eagle had a great deal on IHOP coffee. They priced it $1.99 for their Wednesday only special deal. Problem is that if you camped out to get it first thing in the morning you probably got some, but otherwise most stores sold out by morning. Some stores didn’t even get a shipment in. It’s a great deal, but not if it frustrates shoppers because not enough is in stock, if any at all. They are treading on written and unwritten rules about having sale products in stock. At least offer a rain check. They can get around offering rain checks by saying there are limits or no rainchecks will be offered.
Here’s Ohio’s rule on rainchecks:
Consumers may be entitled to a rain check if a seller advertises goods or services at a certain price and sells out before the consumer has had a chance to purchase the product at that price. A rain check will allow the consumer to purchase the advertised product or service at a later date for the sale price. However, some exclusions apply. If the seller clearly and conspicuously discloses the number of goods available or that the merchandise is limited and no rain checks will be given, the seller is not required to issue a rain check. In addition, the rain check requirement does not apply if the seller allows the consumer to purchase a similar item of equal or greater value at the same savings event. A rain check must be honored within 60 days after issue. Once the seller notifies the consumer that the item is back in stock, the consumer has 14 days to redeem the rain check.
SUPERMAN COMING HOME
The new Superman movie, Genesis is being filmed in downtown Cleveland and other parts of northeast Ohio, including Mentor Headlands. I was able to get some pics of the set downtown. The Leader building on Superior Ave next to the old Arcade was transformed into the Daily Planet, the newspaper where Clark Kent worked. There were chunks of buildings on the road, so there will be some villain scenes filmed there for sure.
I got shooed away from the street when I went over to take pics. The security guy asked me if I was and extra or part of the crew and, although I could’ve given him a different answer, I said no. Here was my opportunity to get into another movie, but I had to get to work.
Superman was created by Cleveland residents Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1933 while they attended Glenville High School. Jerry’s father was born Mikhel Iankel Segalovich and his mother was born Sora Meita Khaikels, but they changed their names to Michael and Sarah Siegel after moving to the US from Lithuania. His father was a tailor and owned a clothing store. On June 2, 1932, Michael was assaulted in his store by a shoplifter and suffered a fatal heart attack. After Jerry married he bought a house in University Heights at 2402 Glendon Ave near John Carroll University.
Jolan Kovas (name changed to Joanne) became Jerry’s second wife and was partly the inspiration for Lois Lane. She put a help wanted ad in the paper as a model with no experience. Jerry took her up on it. She lived on Parkwood Drive and that street was renamed “Lois Lane”
Joe Shuster was born in Toronto and moved to Cleveland as a child. His failing eyesight later in life caused him to stop being able to illustrate comics and led to his poverty.
Along with Clark Gable, Kent Taylor, another actor, served as the inspiration behind the name of Superman’s alter-ego Clark Kent.
There are about 30 forms of Kryptonite. Lead protects Superman from the affects of kryptonite.
The original Daily Planet building was supposedly modeled after the AT&T art deco building on Huron Road. However, the city of Toronto, Joe’s birth town, was the inspiration for the city of Metropolis.
You can find tributes to them around Cleveland. There are murals with a homage to Seigel and Shuster on the Orange Blossom Press building near the Cleveland West Side Market next to Market Garden Brewery. Amor Avenue in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood was renamed “Joe Shuster Lane”. He grew up at Amor Ave., but the apartment is no longer there. At 10622 Kimberly Avenue in Cleveland is where Jerry lived and the street was renamed “Jerry Siegel Lane”. The house is still there and has a “S” symbol on the front fence.
In March 1938, they sold all rights to Superman to the comic-book publisher Detective Comics, Inc. for $130 ($2,814 when adjusted for inflation). Action Comic #1, the first comic with Superman, last sold for over $3 million. Time to start checking your attics for old comic books!
