GIANT EAGLE FREE TURKEY
To snag a free turkey, Giant Eagle customers can simply shop at the grocery store chain from Oct. 16 through Nov. 10, as all eligible purchases made during this timeframe will count toward earning their bird. Customers who spend at least $350 will be entitled to a free Giant Eagle frozen turkey of any size. Once a customer hits the $350 spend threshold, a free turkey can be redeemed in the next transaction from Oct. 16 through Nov. 30. The same Giant Eagle Loyalty Card must be used for each qualifying transaction, and progress toward the free turkey will be shown on receipts, as well as tracked in the Giant Eagle app.
This year, customers who earn a free turkey will be able to donate the value of their turkey, if they wish. FLIGHT NIGHTMARE
The government shutdown has led to 10% of flights at 40 of the largest airports being cut back with plans to increase it to 20%. The percentage is expected to go higher until the government shutdown is resolved. A government official even stated flights may be reduced to a trickle by Thanksgiving. Trying to rebook your flight at the last minute because of the cutbacks will be a nightmare not to mention unsafe since air traffic controllers are not being paid and are calling in sick.
If you are hit with a cancellation, be sure to call the airline or check your flight on the airline’s site or app to rebook. Waiting in line is another option, but by the time you get to an airline agent all the available flights for the day may be gone. Some airlines rebook fliers automatically.
Not helping is that the government also rescinded customer-friendly compensation should your flight get delayed. The original proposal, announced in 2023, called for payments of $200 to $775 depending on the length of the delay, plus free meals, hotel stays, and rebooked flights. It targeted airline situations like mechanical issues or IT outages and not weather or air traffic control. Currently, carriers must provide refunds if a flight is canceled altogether, but they don’t owe travelers anything for delays outside of cancelling your flight.

GAS/ELECTRIC RATES COMPARISON
Enbridge went to the Public Utilities Commission in December 2023 seeking to increase rates by roughly $13 each month. Instead, state regulators’ ruling Wednesday will bring residential bills down by about $2 a month. Since utilities in Ohio are regulated monopolies, regulators and their staff must determine through rate cases how much revenue companies like Enbridge should collect to make a fair profit. Enbridge had filed for the PUCO to reconsider its decision, but regulators declined.
Residential natural gas bills consist of two parts. One set of distribution charges goes to the utility delivering the gas, like Enbridge, maintaining the lines and handling the billing. The other part of the bill is for supply — or the natural gas customers use each month. Those charges come from a gas supplier, a different company from Enbridge.
Find out if you’re being charged a fixed or variable rate by checking your currrent bill. You may be paying tons more because you’re on a more expensive plan. Check with your supplier or with NOPEC, the consortium that many customers use to get a better natural gas or electric rates.

PROPERTY TAX ELIMINATION
There has been a lot of banter about eliminating property taxes, especially for seniors. Yes, great, but the money from property taxes is used for schools, police, fire departments, roads and other local services. So how would the funding for those get replaced? Sales tax increases? That affects the poor more than the rich as it’s a regressive tax in which low-income owners pay a larger percentage of income than middle- and high-income earners. So it’s a shell game. Beware, as most likely you’ll see the poor and middle class get taxed in some other way to fund property tax elimination or reductions, including an income tax increase.
That being said, be ready to pay a larger tax bill this upcoming year since many homes have been assessed a higher value. It’s great in a way that homes are worth more – worth more when you sell it, if you do. But it also means you’re taxed at a higher rate. The median sale price of a home in Ohio was $261,500 last month, up from $190,600 in 2020. Ohio, with one of the highest state effective property taxes, will make finances more difficult for many.
In recent years, Ohio pulled funding for cities, schools and libraries. In their place, local entities put levies on the ballot of which many got approved. So, in essence, taxes increased because of the pulled funding. In 2002 the state’s share of public education funding was 44.8% and in 2023 it was 33.5%. Dropping property taxes will create this same scheme that will lead to increased taxes and/or reduced services.
CAUGHT RED-HANDED
I recently caught a car maintenance service shop red-handed. I took my car in for its first oil change and tire rotation at the dealership where I bought it. Plus one of my tires was leaking air so I asked them to check the tire. I ended up getting a free differential change worth $249, my gas tank filled, a $30 discount on a new tire, and a free oil change and filter because I found out they didn’t rotate the tires or check the one tire for a leak.
How did I catch them in a lie? I marked one of the letters on the tire that was leaking with a Sharpie. I filled in the letter “O” so that I would know if they rotated it or not. Something told me that I shouldn’t trust them, so I took that step before I got there. The tire I marked was in the same spot after they supposedly did the tire rotation which also means they probably didn’t bother checking the tire for leaks.
When I spoke with their manager they said they didn’t have to rotate the tires because all the tires were the same 7 mm tire depth and that’s part of Honda’s rules. To me that’s bunk, so I sent a message to the GM. I finally got a hold of him and told him what happened and he agreed they should have rotated the tires no matter the Honda policy. The good thing is that the GM instructed him to take care of me, so I knew I had their attention now. When I had the car there prior they said I needed to replace the differential fluid and that it cost $249, so I told the GM to include that for free with what they were doing and he agreed.
When I came back the service advisor was a nice guy and he remembered me because we joked around when I went there for the oil change and all. He knew when I asked if they checked the tire and did the rotation he said they did when I was last there, so he knew he blew it and was willing to give me what I wanted. I told him to check the tire for leaks again. Sure enough, this time he found a nail that punctured the inside side of the tire. Easily found since it was sticking out about an inch, but now I knew they didn’t inspect the tire the first time I was there and the service advisor now had his tail between his legs. They couldn’t patch it since it was on the sidewall, so I had to get a new tire. That’s when he offered me all kinds of stuff.
He said he would fill up the car with gas, get me a free oil change and rotation, and give me a discount on the tire. Plus I got a free car wash card for a car wash across the street. Mind you, the service manager was there and didn’t come by to apologize and all. The service advisor did.
I also told him to replace the screws on the license plate since they were rusting already. He said he would…he didn’t and now the next I go there I will request more freebies. When will they learn…
