\nTO SMARTPHONE OR NOT TO SMARTPHONE?<\/strong>
\nMy 2 year contract with AT&T for my cell phone service ended recently. Now I have to chose whether I want to make the big leap and get a smartphone or stick with my cheapo flip phone. I was ready to make the change, but after stopping at an AT&T store I’m now having second thoughts. <\/p>\n

First, the smartphone will cost me about $200. I can get a regular cell phone for nothing or close to it. The plan upgrade will cost me about $100 more a month. AT&T does this tricky thing where you can’t get your Corporate discount for anything under $39.99, so it forces you to upgrade to plans that are really more than what you need. <\/p>\n

Another issue is that I’ll lose my plan that I was grandfathered into. It’s a 550 minute plan that they no longer offer. The smallest plan they offer now is 700 minutes. The problem is I get around 150 rollover minutes each month because I don’t use all my cell minutes so to move up a plan would cost me more for something I will not use.
\n
\nAnother reason has nothing to do with money. It has to do with letting a smartphone rule my life. I see so many people plinking away on their smartphone while they are eating dinner or at family gatherings or even at work…even bathrooms. And does everyone want to know my exact whereabouts as I go about my day? Is it really that exciting to others that they know I’m making cabbage soup or ironing my favorite slacks?<\/p>\n

I think the youngest generation has a smartphone addiction. I even saw a sign at a register at Giant Eagle that said for employees not to use their smartphone. A CVS cashier I spoke with this past week was telling me how the new hires are trying to sneak using their smartphones, even going to the bathroom to use them. I don’t want to get addicted. Plus I don’t want to get a hunch back from craning downward to look at it all the time.<\/p>\n

The plusses to get one is that smartphones help while travelling. You can send and receive messages when you need them. Getting the unlimited plans for data and texts gives some flexibility.<\/p>\n

In the end is it worth $1,200 annually to have a Smartphone? I use my laptop (which is easier to type in) for most all my internet needs. What instead could I buy with $1,200? Grilles for my teeth? Scratch off lottery tickets? X-ray vision glasses? I’m going to have to sleep on this one.<\/p>\n

\nWHERE ART THOU SUMMER?<\/strong>
\nSummer has been a bit absent this year. To help coax it out of its shell I decided to trick it into coming back. I had a plan and if I execute it perfectly I know it will work.<\/p>\n

The first thing I did was when I got up in the morning I pulled out a lawn chair, you know, those long ones that sunbathers use, and I set it up at the end of my driveway. I got some Criso sunflower oil, slathered it on and just tempted the sun to attack me. I even drew up a sign that I waved at the sun tuantingly that said “My flashlight with batteries that need to be replaced is brighter than you”. <\/p>\n

There were a couple spots I couldn’t get to with the suntan lotion so I enlistened the help of the paperperson delivering my paper to get those hard to reach spots like the middle of my back. My back was a little sore so I asked them to rub it in with their elbows. <\/p>\n

Sorry to the neighbors that got the paper after mine since you probably got some oily handprints on your papers. You may have gotten enough spillage to even use some of it on yourself. No need to thank me. <\/p>\n

Next I pretended to rush the seasons to get back to summer. I pretended to blow leaves that were on the driveway. I raked them into a pile and jumped into them and hid because that is what leaves are for, hiding in them to scare anybody that walks nearby. People would walk by and say hello so I knew my cover was blown.<\/p>\n

Next I pretended I was shoveling tons of snow. I then built a snow fort and hid in it because that is what they are for, hiding in them to scare anybody that walks nearby. People would walk by and say hello so I knew my cover was blown. I should have learned my lesson that it wouldn’t work, but I didn’t want to skip any of my hard-planned steps.<\/p>\n

Spring arrived I pretended by holding an umbrella up. I decided dancing like Fred Astaire as he did in the song ‘Singing in the Rain’ would add to the effect, except I had all kinds of dance moves all my own. It was a cross of hip-hop dancing and ballet. I couldn’t really describe it well and neither could the sizable crowd that was beginning to form.<\/p>\n

Summer was now ready to arrive again I thought so I propped up a lemonade stand. Sales were somewhat stagnant as the only lemonade I could muster up was melting some cheese in water. It was yellow enough that I thought people wouldn’t notice, but they did. Adding more sugar to it helped, but a few people that were lactose intolerant seemed to get all fussy. <\/p>\n

The smell of my suntan lotion which just brings out the sense of summer seemed to attract others. The neighborhood cats found the smell of my suntan lotion appealing for some reason and they were all licking me. Their gritty tongues were uncomfortable on my skin. Those tongues can probably lick a tattoo off of someone. I had to bark like a dog at them just to shoo them away.<\/p>\n

Summer did seem to arrive with a vengeance that day. It was 80 degrees that day. My work was done. You can thank me as I see the forecast will be hitting near 90 soon. I may have to give it a try again in January. <\/p>\n

\nWALMART<\/strong>
\nWalmart announced lower than expected earnings. They are struggling and there are many reasons why.<\/p>\n

Dollar stores are taking some of their business. They are a lot smaller so they are easier to find what you need instead of a massive store like a SuperWalmart where you need food and water just to make sure you survive getting to the other side of the store.<\/p>\n

Another reason they aren’t doing as well is self-inflicted. A total of 10% of all retail jobs belong to Wal-mart and many others follow in line with Wal-mart’s practices. One of them being that they pay their workers very poorly. And who are their best customers? Those that are low-wage earners. When they don’t have money to spend then it reflects in their sales.<\/p>\n

Henry Ford paid his workers a good wage. Why? Partly because he needed customers. If his workers couldn’t afford buying a car, then it would cause multiple issues. One being that there would be less customers to purchase the cars. Another is not creating an environment where the workers can’t even afford the products they built. Creating resentment in workers is not a good thing. The workers at the lowest rung should get a good piece of the pie if they helped bake it. Productivity has been high while wages have stagnated. With inflation higher than wage increases it’s no wonder the lowest paid workers are struggling to make ends meet.<\/p>\n

Wal-mart wants people to spend more money at their stores, but how can they when they can only afford to pay for essentials with such a low wage. Costco, on the other hand, pays their workers well. And guess what, their stock has done great. Their workers stick around and are more productive because the company takes care of them. The 10 year stok return on WalMart is 3%. At Costco it’s 26%. The average 10 year return for other company’s is 7.5%. <\/p>\n

It’s a lot tougher to get by nowadays on a low wage because of the high gas prices. You’d pretty much have to work a couple hours just to pay for the gas to drive to the job. Figure in the cost of your car, insurance, and maintenance and it’s no wonder Walmart workers are having a hard time finding money to spend at a store where they work.<\/p>\n

Wal-mart has shown over and over again with many lawsuits that they have lost that they are not about taking care of their workers. They have lost lawsuits for gender discrimination, making workers work off the clock, and many others.<\/p>\n

They have shown that they want to reduce hours so that they don’t have to pay workers health benefits. So here’s a company that makes incredible multi-billion dollar profits and they don’t want to take care of their workers in the most basic ways. Sure, it’s a retail job and nobody is going to get rich working minimum wage-type jobs, but at least they should treat their workers right. They shouldn’t have to sue their company to treat them right.<\/p>\n

Many people have boycotted shopping at Wal-mart because of their practices. Some shop at Whole Foods and other earth- and people-conscious companies, even though they charge a lot more.<\/p>\n

I can appreciate Wal-mart helping lower prices, but at what cost? You don’t save a whole lot more there, if you even do on some products. The savings are about 10% or so over Giant Eagle as they have advertised for a small smattering of items. In the ad this week they had the saving against Dollar General at a little over 8%. Not much at all. <\/p>\n

At minimum a coupon will get you 10% off the price of an item. That means at stores that double coupons you will get an additional 10% off for coupons that qualify making the difference in savings nil. Plus you get Fuelperks at Giant Eagle which equate to 6% when it’s at 10 cents for every $50 spent and 12% savings at 20 cents. Shop the sale items at Giant Eagle and you will see savings over 70% when you use a coupon and also when you trigger their eOffers (electronic coupons). Yet most people think GE has higher prices. Not always. <\/p>\n

WalMart’s produce prices are high, so not everything is priced low. Aldi’s beats the pants off their produce prices. <\/p>\n

Walmart price matches which means that they know their prices aren’t the best and they want other shoppers to keep shopping there. What a hassle it is to price match at the register. Some stores like Lowe’s will also give 10% of the difference with a price match. Now that’s making it a little more worth it. After all, why should I give my business to a store that didn’t have a lower price in the first place! <\/p>\n

They used to be all about selling made in America products. Not anymore. Most is sourced from China. I think people see them for what they are now and have made a decision to stop shopping there. They don’t even have greeters anymore and that is partly what endeared them to customers.<\/p>\n

Too many of their workers are on government assistance. Some states have even passed laws to get Walmart to pay more in taxes because of it. Any job should be good enough that you shouldn’t qualify for government assistance. Why should we subsidize them with our tax dollars to make up for Wal-mart’s low wages when they makes Billions in profits?<\/p>\n

I keep hearing that the lines are long at Walmart and shelves aren’t stocked well. It’s partly because they also want to avoid having to pay for additional workers needed at their stores. What does that say to a customer when they don’t even care to have enough service and help to make your shopping experience a good one.<\/p>\n

Walmart built 3 new Walmart buildings in my area in the past 20 years. But wait…they are in the same city of Eastlake! They have enough money to waste on what was a perfectly good store and built two others. Couldn’t that money have gone to the workers instead? The one they built now has so many traffic issues they now had to redesign it. You’d think they would know how many people come in their store and what egress and ingress they need. Perhaps they cheaped out on their store planning department too. Parking is going to be a big issue when the holidays come around there. Some people love Walmart and all they offer. It’s a easy way to know you are getting an ok price for pretty much anything you buy. But is it? Shop around and compare like for like. You may be surprised. Also compare items that go on sale at other stores compared to Walmart’s everyday low price.<\/p>\n

Sometimes its about shopping at the same store you’re comfortable with for years and years. You get used to them and you don’t shop elsewhere. Test the other stores out. They change all the time, so make sure to keep your store honest by shopping around. After all, a box of Cheerios is the same whether it comes from Heinen’s, WalMart or Giant Eagle.<\/p>\n

I see a lot more “Now Hiring” signs around town. Kids are going back to school so stores will now have to rely on older workers. Many of them need their health care coverage. Let’s see what direction Wal-mat goes because right now if they stick to ‘keep costs down at all costs’ strategy it could send them spiraling downward. Being low cost at everything they do, including with their own employees, may just backfire on them.<\/p>\n
