\nAldi is planning to open 600 stores the next three years and will also enter the California market. Where it gets more interesting is Lidl, one of their competitors overseas, is now also planning to open stores in the U.S. Bad news for other grocery stores. Great news for customers as competition will reduce prices. <\/p>\n

Both stores are similar. Most of what they sell are store brand products, around 90%. They are also a German company, same as Aldi.<\/p>\n

\nECONOMIC UPDATES<\/strong>
\nGAS PRICES – Notice the gas prices dropping. A refinery in Indiana is now back up and running and that brought prices back down. Prices should settle below $2 a gallon now. With winter approaching and China’s economy cooling, prices may go below $1.50. What’s remarkable about it is that the last time it went so low around 2009 it was mainly because the economy was in the tank at the start of the Great Recession. Now the unemployment rate is near 5%, about half of where it peaked during the downturn. So it’s good to see gas prices so low while the economy is doing better.<\/p>\n

JOBS – The number of job openings jumped to 5.8 million, the highest since 2000 when Y2K pumped up job openings. There are now 1.4 unemployed workers to each job opening. It was as high as 6.2 unemployed persons per job opening in November 2009. Now that kids are back in school they cut back on the number of hours they work, so retailers and restaurants are scrambling for workers. Wages haven’t increased accordingly, but they will. The holiday season will not be pretty for those that don’t want to wait in lines as some stores won’t have enough workers.<\/p>\n

STOCK MARKET – The stock market took a dive recently. Then it went back up and then down and then up. In other words, there was a slight correction. However, people are confident enough that they bought on the dips. The craziness with Greece and slowdown in China caused some jitters. The Fed wanting to raise interest rates is causing stock prices to lower. However, the Fed has been delaying it’s decision to up the rate with conflicting economic indicies.<\/p>\n

EGG PRICES – Egg prices stink. They are almost double in price due to a chicken disease outbreak. Eventually, they will come back down. But just like butter, hamburger, bacon, and milk prices that jumped in the recent past things will settle down. Eggs are tough to find a replacement for though. Not like they can up the production on robin eggs. With butter, margarine was a replacement, pork instead of hamburger, turkey bacon instead of real bacon, and soy milk can replace milk…or cloudy water which tastes like skim milk.<\/p>\n

\nRECIPE<\/strong>
\nEveryone loves recipes. Add this one to your recipe box.<\/p>\n

Chocolate Chip and Onion Cookies Recipe<\/em>:
\nOne shoefull of flour
\nTwo tablespoons of acorns
\nOne whole onion
\nOne teaspoon ketchup
\nOne can of Jolt cola
\nOne chocolate chip
\nOne cup of margarine (or one cup of butter if you are well to do)
\nOptional: one fish and nuts<\/p>\n

Vigorously mix all ingredients thoroughly at the same time. Whip all the ingredients. Finally, hit them with a bat. <\/p>\n
