\nEXTENDED CAR WARRANTY <\/strong>
\nDid you ever have something go wrong with your car just after the warranty expires? It almost happened to me and after finding out how much it would’ve cost me I was one happy person. <\/p>\n

I noticed a new sound coming from my car after I hit the gas. It was like a whirring sound. I asked my wife if she heard it and she said no. But just like any car you drive long enough you know any oddball sound or feel from it that isn’t normal. <\/p>\n

I took it to the Classic Toyota dealer and they initially said they didn’t hear it. I described it again and this time they did after another test drive. They said at 100,000 miles that it was normal. Really!? A part going bad does have sounds that are “normally” not usual. They didn’t see a reason to replace it. That didn’t sit well with me. They eventually ended up fessing up that it was the transmission pump after further questioning. First, I had to do some sleuthing, but they wasted my time taking it there without a resolution, so they now have to endure the wrath of my Coupon Guy powers.<\/p>\n

So I called my warranty company up to make sure it was covered. It was. Some parts are covered up to 100,000 miles so I was just 5,000 miles away from it. That was very close. However, I got an extended warranty that is either 7 years or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first. So either way I was good a bit longer. <\/p>\n

I spoke with a manager and demanded a rental car get dropped off at no cost and that they replace the defective transmission pump. I mentioned how I found some info about other Toyotas having the same issue, some mentioning class actions, after googling it online. The manager agreed to replace it and even had a the rental driven to my work place. <\/p>\n

After I got the car back I saw in the paperwork that it would’ve cost almost $4,000! It was all covered under the warranty. Whew! It didn’t sit well that they didn’t do the right thing from the beginning. Persistence paid off. <\/p>\n

\nHappy Valentine’s Day! It’s a great time to connect with your loved one. It’s connecting financially that can be difficult. There are many ways to help assure money doesn’t become an issue in a relationship. I’ll explore them below.<\/p>\n

Money can ruin a relationship, so it’s important to be on the same page financially. Being transparent brings about trust. To keep purchases hidden, some keep separate bank and credit card accounts that aren’t shared. Knowing that you don’t know everything financially about your partner can cause cracks in the relationship. It’s best to be financially naked!<\/p>\n

Not everyone was raised with the same opinions about finances so it should be to no surprise that some couples don’t get along financially at first. Those differences should be communicated to the point that there is an understanding that is acceptable.<\/p>\n

Money always seems to affect relationships. Find out how your partner responds to money by asking pointed questions about it. Their answers may give you a reason to continue the relationship…or not. Unfortunately, some don’t communicate about money until after they are married. After financial outbursts, some are afraid to even bring up money because they are afraid of their spouse’s response. So it’s important to get the financial pulse of your partner early on in a relationship.<\/p>\n

Financial struggles can stress out a relationship. A study found that families with annual incomes above $50,000 had a 31% chance of divorce after 15 years, while families with incomes below $25,000 had a 65% chance. Divorces peaked at 22.6 per 1,000 married women in 1980, about the time inflation was peaking. In 2011, a total of 43% of those over 18 years of age or older are single as compared to 36% in 1970. <\/p>\n

People are afraid of the financial effects of divorce and are being more protective by not getting married and instead cohabitating. By not getting married there are also negative financial aspects that can effect a relationship since having a spouse with a job when the other spouse loses a job can give some financial stability along with healthcare benefits. <\/p>\n

A study by OSU\u2019s Center for Human Resource Research found that those that divorce lose, on average, three-fourths of their personal net worth. Married couples were found to accumulate 93% more than single or divorced people over the life of the study (1985 to 2000). It was found that those who divorced starting losing their net worth 4 years before divorces were final. The study found that men fared better than woman after divorce, holding about 2 \u00bd times the wealth. However, in dollars, it added up to a difference of only $5,124.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, more people live together before taking the marriage plunge, if at all. Many people are afraid of commitment when they’ve seen others around them getting divorced. Does cohabitation assure relationships will work? The stats tell another story. On average, cohabiting couples stay together for only 18 months. Two in three children born to cohabiting couples will see their biological parents break up by age 12, compared to 1 in 4 married couples.
\n

\nMarriage improves the chances of not being in poverty. A total of 34.4% of single mothers and their children were in poverty in the Cleveland-Akron metro area in 2008 while 3.8% of married couples with children were in poverty. However, sometimes it’s not about finances and about safety or some other serious aspect as it’s better to be single than with someone that is abusive or harmful in other ways.<\/p>\n

\n1980 \u2013 62.3%
\n2000 \u2013 57.4%
\n2010 \u2013 51.4%
\n2012 \u2013 50.5%<\/p>\n

TIPS:
\nTrade places with your spouse or significant other in the role of the person that pays the bills and the other that does the shopping so that each person appreciates the other person\u2019s role and difficulties with that role and so that they know the family\u2019s finances. <\/p>\n

If you spend a lot of time arguing about money in your relationship, instead, spend that time finding ways to save more money. Working as a team will help the relationship. <\/p>\n

If you are married and you don\u2019t combine or think of your money as one in the relationship, then there are trust issues with the relationship. Work out these issues before getting married. Know each other\u2019s financial goals such as buying a house and car and schooling. Let each other know your credit scores too and any debts you have. Your partner will find out eventually, so be up front about it. <\/p>\n

Avoid financial cheating! Create joint accounts not only because of inheritance and convenience reasons, but also so that financial trust can be developed. If you decide that you still want separate accounts, still show each other the current balances and spending history of the account. Give each other access to the separate accounts too. Be transparent. Include each other in financial decisions. You will develop more trust as you increase your communication about each other\u2019s finances. Financial infidelity can ruin a marriage.<\/p>\n

One out of two marriages end up in divorce and upwards of three out of four second marriages end up in divorce. The grass isn\u2019t always greener on the other side as many people find out too late. Be sure to make sure you are financially compatible before marrying someone. <\/p>\n

Before getting married decide who will pay the bills, what will be done if you go into or are in debt, what bills will be paid first if you are in debt, decide which expenses need to be cut back, find out each other\u2019s money history (bankruptcies, credit card debt, credit rating, foreclosures, how much money was typically saved), how much discretionary income can be spent, and if you do have extra money figure out what it will be spent on or if it will be saved. <\/p>\n

How you react to financial issues can either help your finances or make them worse. For instance, if you react to financial arguments with the silent treatment, it will only lead to more issues not to mention a poor communication style. Compromising is a good trait as it will lead to a strong relationship. Sounds simplistic, but if you thought about how past arguments about money were resolved was there a pattern? Was the outcome fair?<\/p>\n

Try to live on one salary after getting married and put the other salary in savings. It will force you to make beneficial long-term changes in your spending habits. Upgrading your spending lifestyle without a nest egg can lead to financial failures. It\u2019s best not to get used to a higher lifestyle until you have enough in savings to keep your lifestyle intact.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t date people that will lead to problem relationships that can also be a drain on your finances. If people close to you like family and friends are concerned about whom you are dating, take a step back and review the relationship. Communicate your concerns with your partner. Their response may give you pause as to whether you want to proceed. Do you both want children or not? Are you expecting them to change or are you ok with how they are?
