\nThe West Side Market will now be open on Sundays from 12 to 6. It’s the first time they’ve been open on Sundays. It starts April 3rd.<\/p>\n

Back in the day, hardly any stores were open on Sundays. It was mainly due to the teaching that the 7th day, Sunday, was a day of rest. Times have changed as it’s rare for a store not to be open on Sundays. One popular store that is closed on Sundays for religious reasons is Chick-Fil-A. <\/p>\n

\nIKEA<\/strong>
\nIkea was going to build a store in Brooklyn, but decided not to after some concerns with the land there. So now the plans for a store in the Cleveland area are back to the drawing board. It’s hard to find a large amount of acres of land that hasn’t been built on and that is what Ikea is looking for in the area. <\/p>\n

The closest Ikea is in Pittsburgh. Columbus will have a store opening in the summer of 2017. <\/p>\n

I was in an Ikea store once. It was like a maze. Good thing they had food tasting stations throughout the store because I needed sustenance just to get through the whole store. <\/p>\n

The way they have the store laid out you have to walk through it all. It took so long that I grew a beard by the time I got out. The only way out of the maze is to skirt through a display area. My guess is that they have to send out search committees at the end of the night to look for lost customers. They should give you a prize just for making it out alive.<\/p>\n

\nCREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED AT ALDIS <\/strong>
\nALDI will now accept credit cards! They will accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. They didn’t in the past to save on the fee they get charged by credit card companies on transactions. What spurred it was that Lidl, a similar store in Europe, plans to start opening stores in the U.S. and they take credit cards.<\/p>\n

\nBILL GOTCHAS<\/strong>
\nOne way Energy suppliers like to git ya is to sign you up to a variable rate only to increase the charge after their initial low rate. The same thing happens with low APR credit cards or first year deals for satellite TV or other offers.<\/p>\n

Some energy suppliers sign you up to a fixed rate and that isn’t always better than the variable rate. Since gas prices keep going down the fixed rate has been higher, and at times much higher, than the variable rate. <\/p>\n

I use NOPEC for both gas and electric. They give me a discount off the rates from First Energy and Dominion. I do the variable rates which are good. <\/p>\n

Speaking of, Dominion SCO rates will go from $2.21 per Mcf to $1.73 per Mcf in March. Columbia gas customers will see the SCO rates go from .3479 per 100 cubic feet to .30 per 100 cubic feet. Gas companies make profits from delivery charges and not from the sale of gas.<\/p>\n

Another gotcha is paperless billing. I’m all for being green, but some companies are sneaky about it. When you go to paperless billing you tend to stop checking your bill to see if they are charging you for something you shouldn’t be charged! Set up auto-pay and it’s a given that you will forget to check. Make it a habit to check each bill monthly to catch them trying to git ya, even if it means signing in online to check it.<\/p>\n

\nSTORE RATINGS <\/strong>
\nHave you noticed your shopping experience at stores wasn’t as good this past year? You’re not alone. The American Consumer Satisfaction Index found ratings in most categories fell in it’s annual survey of grocery stores. Convenience, in-stocks and frequency of sales and promotions fell several points each in customer rankings, while courtesy and helpfulness of staff saw the steepest decline from last year.<\/p>\n

Wal-Mart ranked last again, but this time Giant Eagle tied them for the bottom score.
\n

\nGotta wonder if stores are seeing their numbers dip because they are having a hard time keeping workers because of the low unemployment rate. Supply and demand may be affecting the quality of workers. When unemployment is high, stores have a better selection of workers to choose from. With unemployment low like it is now, pickings are slim. More workers come and go as shown by the higher quit rate in the U.S. After the Great Recession in 2009, some companies are still under the thought that they can find good workers easy and pay them minimal wages. <\/p>\n

Some workers might be working under the mantra – minimum work for minimum wage. Also, some workers may be overworked with not enough people to handle the duties. It doesn’t lead to happy workers that want to ask customers if they need help.<\/p>\n

However, next year after all the raises Wal-Mart implemented for all its lowest-paid workers I’d be curious to see if it has an effect on their rating. The staff that had worked there many years though didn’t see their pay increase the same percentage-wise as those that got paid the minimum so those long-term employees may feel shafted and that also has to be taken into consideration.<\/p>\n

Some stores are realizing the demographic changes and are reacting to it. Retailers are adding jobs and competing for workers as evidenced by yet another store increasing their minimum pay. Costco just announced they will be increasing their minimum pay by $1.50 an hour to $13 to $13.50 an hour.<\/p>\n

Overall wages are still stagnating nonetheless. Perhaps as all the higher-paid baby boomers retire they are being replaced by new lower-wage workers. <\/p>\n

\nDid you hear about some companies using wood pulp in their parmesan cheese? The FDA is cracking down on companies that cheat on their cheese. After testing parmesan cheese the FDA found that some used fillers in their parmesan cheese and some didn’t have any parmesan in it at all. Instead, they used other cheeses aside from the wood filler. <\/p>\n

Many store brands, including those sold at Wal-Mart had wood pulp in their cheese. <\/p>\n

Castle Cheese, the manufacturer of the bojangled cheese, went bankrupt. <\/p>\n

So keep an eye on your cheese. If the cheese on your pizza melts, it’s good. If it catches fire, it’s not good.<\/p>\n
