\nSPRING BREAK 2016<\/strong>
\nWe took a Carribbean cruise. Our lucky foreign exchange daughter and her friend came along too. We now have many requests from our adult friends to be our next exchange student. As long as they go to high school and get good grades and do their chores then they qualify. <\/p>\n

We booked the cruise through http:\/\/www.vacationtogo.com<\/a> for a good deal plus we got a $150 credit per room. We kept checking to see if the rates went down while keeping the credit. You can rebook 75 days before the cruise. After that the price and all is locked in.<\/p>\n

The flight was with United Airlines. I booked the flight about 7 months before the vacation. Normally we don\u2019t book flights that far in advance, but we had to this time because our vacation was during Spring Break. <\/p>\n

I booked the flight after I noticed the costs increasing in price. The price would go up and down and we booked it when the price dropped. Glad I did because the price almost doubled a month after I booked it. It was a non-stop so it was going to be a popular ticket. Sure enough, before our flight we were asked about taking another flight and getting a $200 voucher. Problem is, the flight they would’ve put us on had a risky connection with only about a half hour layover. It even said it online. It was to Newark so there was no way I was going to chance it, so we took our original flight.<\/p>\n

We have the United credit card so we got our first luggage free, free United Club passes, and no foreign transaction fees. <\/p>\n

Our first stop was in San Juan, Puerto Rico where the cruise started. I booked a hotel through Hotels.com<\/a> around 9 months before our stay. Good thing we did. It was Spring Break and hotels were priced very high. I kept checking to see if prices went down and they never really did. So we stuck with our original booking which was about half of any other deal I could find.<\/p>\n

We stopped at Barrachina in Old San Juan, the restaurant that says they invented the Pina Colada. Of course, we had to partake in tasting it. We also had to get our fill of mofongo. It’s a traditional dish of Puerto Rico that is a mixture of plantains and some other root vegetables.<\/p>\n

\n
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\nOn Sunday of the trip it was Easter and we wanted to stop at a local church for mass. I found one, but the mass was in Spanish. I don\u2019t know a lick of Spanish. We went anyway and we were glad we did. <\/p>\n

The mass was pretty much the same as any of the masses we\u2019ve gone to. There was a lot of confusion though as the priest had to get up and tell someone they were reading the wrong part. Lots of people moving around. From what we gathered a previous priest was back for the Easter mass. Lots of clapping for him. We just listened attentively. Mass is usually very regimented so it seemed familiar. They didn’t have any alter boys or girls, but there was an older guy that served as one that dressed and looked like he came from the ’70s. He wore everything from the ‘one too many open buttons’ shirt, gold necklace, and white folded up sleeves over a suit…perhaps leisure suit. Machismo galore.<\/p>\n

At the end of the mass the priest gestured our way and said something about an American family from what I could tell. I looked back thinking he meant another family as there were many there that looked American. Sure enough, after mass he walks directly up to us and shakes our hands. He asks us where we are from. One of the gals we were with knew some Spanish from high school and was able to answer him. We must have stuck out like a sore thumb. They were probably thinking how weird our clothes was. Everyone was so friendly.<\/p>\n

\n
\n\"Expedia.com\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\nPuerto Rico and St Thomas, our first stop on the cruise, are U.S. territories so there was no extra phone or texting charges there. After those stops I had to shut my phone off so that I didn’t get any voicemails or calls that I could be charged for.<\/p>\n

One of the first things we did when we got on the ship was to enter any raffles. On the first day everyone is tired and they usually don’t bother to show up at the “must be present to win” raffles. The strategy worked. My wife won $75 off at the spa! <\/p>\n

Another thing to do right away is to get on the list of upgrades. Sometimes they will upgrade you for free. Problem was the ship was fully booked and they even had one person without a room. <\/p>\n

The first day is also good for booze discounts. They gave an additional 10% off on day one plus they had specials when you bought more than one bottle. I bought 4 bottles of 1 liter Absolut for $49. That was because they had to price match an ad I got before I got on the ship. The ad was from the place that sells booze before you get on the ship. On the ship they had some other great deals like Finlandia and Stoli 1 liter vodka for $10. I got Bacardi white rum for less than $10 for a liter too.<\/p>\n

They hold any liquor you have until the last day of the cruise. You are, however, allowed to bring two bottles of wine onboard. So if you bring in more than the allotted 2 bottles of wine they will give it to you on the last day to finish up! <\/p>\n

Bottles of wine were pricey. Almost all were $30 or more and the cheapest was $29. They had a package deal that averaged $33 a bottle, but some of the bottles offered with the deal were priced less than $33! I had to ask for a wine list to check, so don’t assume it is a deal just because it is part of a package deal.<\/p>\n

Another wine deal was for two bottles that were worth $109 total that was on special for $69 plus you got two free wine glasses. We did that deal. <\/p>\n

The cruise was with Royal Caribbean. We’ve stuck with them for almost all of our cruises and now we are close to diamond status. It just gets us more discounts for the most part. They also allow us to beep the horn of the ship or slam on the brake real hard on the day and time of our choosing.<\/p>\n

\n\"St<\/a>
\n

\nWe took one excursion. It was a snorkeling ride at St Thomas. Sam, the friend of Daisy’s that came with us, really liked it and found the workers on the boat to be inspiring. She took to their freebird lifestyle. The one worker was from Alabama and she decided just to move to St Thomas without any job in place. She got the job on the ship and loves it there. <\/p>\n

They said prices for food are high though. The one guy said that a gallon of milk is $6. Oddly enough, a liter of rum can be had for the same price.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Alabama, we met a couple couples from Alabama that were super nice that we struck up a friendship. They were from Muscle Shoals and their accent was think. We hung with them for much of the cruise. Even bumped into them again at the airport. <\/p>\n

\"Curacao\"<\/a>
\n
\nA caf\u00e9 in Willemstad, Curacao. Notice the KFC in the background. It’s a Dutch colony so you’ll see a lot of Dutch items like Heineken. The island is about 40 miles from Venezuala. About 50 oil tankers are off the coast of Venezuala that are visible from Curacao. There are payment issues so the tankers are waiting for them to get it settled while they wait out at sea.<\/p>\n

\nThe taxis were very affordable at all of the islands. Some charged per car of 4 (on Curacao it cost $20 total one way for 4 or $5 apiece). In St Thomas it was $8 one way to Megan’s Bay. Buses were the way to go in Aruba at $2 one way. St Kitts it was $7 one way per person to where we went. Taking a taxi to your destination can be cheaper than booking an excursion through the ship.<\/p>\n

Our exchange daughter, Daisy, and I both won medals on the ship. She won one for a dance contest and I got one for winning a volleyball tournament. Figuring the medal allowed us special privileges I tried to enter the Captain’s brig and Employee only floors, but was met with resistance. Boy, they sure take things seriously there.<\/p>\n

I played a lot of volleyball on the ship. We even beat the team that beat the ship directors in pool volleyball. The cruise directors rarely lose and they ended up playing a rematch at a later date and they lost again. On our team was a guy from Greece, a guy that won second place in the sexiest man contest, an older gentleman that I don’t think ever played volleyball in his life, and a gal that played high school volleyball.<\/p>\n

\n\"OLYMPUS<\/a>
\n

\nWe went jet skiing at St Kitts. I was able to negotiate a better deal. Go figure.<\/p>\n

One thing that stunk was how salty the water was. In St Thomas they said that it was the saltiest after the dead sea. The water hurt getting into my eyes while jet skiing. Now I know what French fries feel like when people put salt on them.<\/p>\n

\nAfter a full day of running around I made a point to add my calories back at dinner. You’re allowed to get as many appetizers and dinners as you want. So for one dinner I ate something like two lobster dinners, a pork ravioli dinner, prime rib dinner, and a steak salad along with some appetizers, I believe soup, a mushroom pastry, and some duck pate. Oh, and did I mention dessert. Yes, you get as much dessert as you want too. I usually wouldn’t each much for lunch, so that I could eat a big dinner. I also ate a full breakfast.<\/p>\n

You get paired up with other people at the dining table for dinner, but this time they never showed up. It’s nice to get to know other people that you meet at the table. Usually. They must have went to the cafeteria the whole time. The food in the dining room is usually much better. <\/p>\n

You’d think I would have gained 10 pounds, but I didn’t gain but maybe a pound. They had a fitness room on the ship and I used it a few times. Nice to try new weightlifting equipment. The one thing that is tough is running on the treadmill. The boat sways so you have to watch out that you don’t fall over.<\/p>\n

Speaking of swaying, for those that have never cruised there is a feeling that you are still swaying after getting home. Very odd feeling because you could swear you are swaying. I guess your brain gets used to slogging from side to side. It goes away after a few days.<\/p>\n

I also brushed up on some Croatian that I knew. I bumped into someone from each of the countries of Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Croatia. They worked on the ship. They all understood my hello in Croatian. Most are surprised to even hear it. They said there were 42 different nationalities that worked on the ship. Most were from India, the Philippines, or eastern Europe.<\/p>\n

\nInternet on the ship was expensive and all I used was two half hour sessions that originally cost $10 each, but I had a discount code. <\/p>\n

One thing to remember is to take a taxi instead of the cruise transfer to and from the airport as taking the taxi is usually cheaper.<\/p>\n

We got warnings about the Zika virus, but I didn’t see a single mosquito the whole trip. It probably helped that I wore a button that said no mosquitos. You know that picture of a mosquito with a slash through it. I heard they are very good at reading button messages. We also stayed in the beach areas to avoid being around mosquitos because it’s windy around the beaches. The wind tends to keep the mosquitos away. <\/p>\n

We came home back to winter. It doesn’t seem fair that there is even snow into April. I found out that in the past 100 years there have only been two times where it hasn’t snowed in Cleveland in April. I doth protest loudly as doeth my wilting daffodils to this extension of winter. At least the swaying feeling kept me thinking of the trip.<\/p>\n
