\nRIP DUMMY<\/strong>
\nWe had some of the toughest days this past week. Our cat, Dummy, is now in kitty heaven. He was over 16 years old. Yes, we named our cat Dummy. His brother is also named Dummy. <\/p>\n

He wasn’t doing well. Over the past year he went through extensive testing that included allergy tests, blood tests, x-rays, cortisone shots, etc. We even had acupuncture performed on the him or catupuncture as we called it. All indications were that he had kidney failure although none of the tests pointed to anything specific aside for allergies to lots of things. He had lost half his weight over the past year. He was about 20 lbs to start so it was quite a drop. <\/p>\n

The other morning he had labored breathing. We realized it may be time. We took him to the vet and she confirmed our suspicions and said it was time. Not the words you want to hear because you know it will be the last time you get to see your cat, but we knew he was suffering and it was something we had to do.<\/p>\n

After 16 years you really become attached. Anyone with pets know how hard it is to part with their beloved pet. They become part of the family. Their quirks become something you get used to. Their affection, their crabbiness, everything that defined them made them who they are and you loved them for it.<\/p>\n

The gray Dummy or little Dummy or Stinky as we called him had quite the personality. We used those names with affection and he knew it. <\/p>\n

Most cats are skittish. Ours aren’t the least bit skittish. They would greet visitors and plop down in front of them to get their fill of attention. However, they have been known to get annoyed by little kids with their squirmy hands and high pitched voices. Apparently that was not their cup of tea.<\/p>\n

We often heard they are like dogs because they were so big and long. When service technicians would come over to the house they would comment on how big the cats were. They see lots of cats and you know if they are saying they were big then they were.<\/p>\n

\n\"Timeout\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He always seemed to have the appropriate look when he was in the Timeout Box.<\/p>\n

\nHe loved to snuggle in my wife’s left armpit when she slept. He would dig his nose in and do some kind of licking and smacking thing to the point it dis-colored her pajamas shirts brown. I said it was gross, but she didn’t care what it was from. She found it endearing. He would purr nestled in her arms and when I would pet him he would purr even louder, but sometimes he’d give out a fussy meow letting me know I was messing with his routine.<\/p>\n

He liked flipping around like a pancake on the patio in the front yard. Sometimes he would chase a chipmunk or just slowly walk around to scout out the garden area, probably to see how the catnip crops were doing. <\/p>\n

He had some odd traits. He’d lick windows for one. He’d also lick the plastic bags from stores. He’d also chew paper. He loved chewing the corners of paper, so we had to be sure to keep anything on paper that was important out of reach from him. His brother had none of these traits. As much as I wanted to see what he was tasting, I never did try.<\/p>\n

We kept them inside, but sometimes he would sneak out an open door even in the cold of winter and especially when my wife would bring in groceries. We’d have to call for him and wait for his meow to ping us back. One time we got home late and I saw four beady eyes reflecting back in the front yard next to the driveway. Sure enough, after sneaking out both cats waited for us to get home. They knew where to wait. We have lots of wildlife in the area so we were glad they didn’t get into any animal kingdom fights. Even the other month there was a bear in the area!<\/p>\n

My wife was the gray cat’s favorite whereas the white one is mine. The white one looks at me with pure adoration and revs up his purring really loud. It was partly the reason we stopped letting them sleep with us. The white one purred so loud we couldn’t sleep.<\/p>\n

\"Sleepy<\/a><\/p>\n

They always slept so tightly together that I suspect that was how they situated in the mother’s womb.<\/p>\n

\nWe don’t know how his brother will be in the coming weeks after realizing his brother isn’t around anymore. Before we left the house I tried to get them to say their goodbyes, but the white one was being fussy and just wanted to go downstairs where the food is at. <\/p>\n

We’ll miss our Dummy. I’ll miss giving him hugs and petting him. He was so soft. I think he used some of my Vidal Sassoon shampoo or other stash of hair care when we weren’t home. He was just so squeezable. I found out the hard way not to squeeze him too hard. I didn’t know it the first time it happened, but apparently cats have anal glands that pop or need to be every so often. Something that happens when you squeeze them. At first I thought it was a fart, but then I realized it isn’t …well, it’s not pleasant to make that discovery.<\/p>\n

\n\"Warm<\/a><\/p>\n

Warm laundry baskets were his guilty pleasure.<\/p>\n

\nSo at the vets office we went into the room where they put the pets down. They gave the cat gas to calm them down. At that point I realized I didn’t want my last visions of him possibly struggling and had to leave the room. My wife wanted to comfort him in the last minutes and be there through it all so I knew he was in good hands. <\/p>\n

The name Dummy came from when my Mom had a cat. She would always say when she was trying to feed it some scraps, “Na Dummy, Na.” Which meant ‘here Dummy here’ in Croatian. Her cat had a different name, but what she actually called it stuck with me. Our cats were brothers so I named them both Dummy since to me they were one in the same. They never complained to me about having the same name either.<\/p>\n

We picked them out when my wife’s friend’s cat had a litter. They were the last two. The gray one, even though he was smaller, was scrapping with the bigger white one even at that age. The gray one was always the dominant one. He would mount the white one and bite his neck to the point he punctured his skin at times and we had to take him to the vet for it. That I won’t miss.<\/p>\n

Most every year we would have a big party for our cats. It was really just a reason to just have a party, but they were the focal point. Their birthday was in March, but their party was held in a different month every year.<\/p>\n

\nI’ll miss him dearly. I can’t wait to see him in heaven again and give him a hug…a gentle one.<\/p>\n
