\nEXPIRATION DATES<\/strong>
\nDid you throw out food recently because it was past its “expired” date? Two people in Congress want to change the rules so that expiration date labels better reflect when food really does expire. It’s great news if it passes.<\/p>\n

If you look at an expiration date it may say “best by” or “sell by” or “use by” or “expires on”. They can all mean something different. The “best by” date indicates when the product will be at its freshest. The “sell by” date is when vendors want their items to be sold. The “use by” date can indicate when the manufacturer vouches for the item’s quality. The “expires on” date means when the item is considered expired, however that doesn’t always mean the item isn’t edible.<\/p>\n

But if the item says “expires on” does it really mean the food shouldn’t be eaten? Not in call cases. Unopened jars of coffee can still be consumed after 20 years. Even dried fruit and beans, syrup, unpopped popcorn and boxed Jell-O mix can last virtually forever. The sniff test may work best to make sure the food is edible.<\/p>\n

Some food given as donations that are expired have to be tossed out. But again, the food may still be good. Some food centers don’t want to chance it though. The way I look at it, if it’s still good food, then someone that is hungry won’t be picky about eating it if there is a confusing arbitrary expiration date on the item. With the new rule, if it passes, there could be tons more food given away with a more legitimate expiration date on the item.<\/p>\n

Many food vendors also agree that the rules should change since so much food is tossed when it is still good. I know I’ve eaten plenty of expired food and I typically wouldn’t know the difference between it and the non-expired version of it. Just go into your refrigerator and see what might be expired. Good chance you’ll find many sauces, especially salad dressing, frozen items, and eggs that are past their expiration date. <\/p>\n

Some items do quickly change as it ages and need to be eaten near the expiration date. Milk, chips, cheese are just some of the items.<\/p>\n

I remember one time when I poured milk into my cereal and it came out lumpy. I guess I rode that expiration date too long. I think that one even spoiled before the expiration date. Again, the sniff test works best. Or in this case, the visual one.
\n

\nIf you want to really know when food expires go to http:\/\/www.eatbydate.com<\/a>. It will tell you when you really need to toss expired food.<\/p>\n

\nUBER<\/strong>
\nI took Uber for the first time recently. We did so because we were at the Our Lady of the Wayside Grapes and Ale wine festival at Progressive Field. We got rides into work and figured we would take Uber or Lyft home. <\/p>\n

So after the event we sent a message to Uber to get picked up. They send a message back that we will be picked up in a Volkswagen Jetta. We start walking towards East 9th and we see a Volkswagen pull up to the side of the road literally seconds after we send the message. Sure enough, it was our driver. Impressive.<\/p>\n

We are on the east side of town so it is a bit of a hike. A taxi would have cost us $60 for the same ride. With Uber it ended up costing us $23.75! Well worth it. We have stayed downtown at a hotel when we do wine events downtown, so this was a cheaper alternative. <\/p>\n

The one thing you have to watch out for is that they have this thing called Surge Pricing. It’s when they get a ton of requests for rides and so they charge more. Our driver said one time it was 4.2. That means they charge 4.2 times the normal rate. We didn’t get charged any Surge Pricing multiplier on our ride.<\/p>\n

They usually offer a discount for first time riders. <\/p>\n
