\nSo what happened after Wal-Mart raised the pay of all their workers? After years of low customer service scores, Walmart has seen their internal customer-service scores increase for 79 straight weeks. The scores, which measure shoppers’ satisfaction with cleanliness, speed, and friendliness, are calculated by surveying thousands of shoppers about their experiences. <\/p>\n

The improvement comes after Walmart committed last year to investing $2.7 billion over two years in wage increases, scheduling improvements, and employee training. <\/p>\n

Not only did workers benefit, Walmart’s sales performance improved with the company’s US same-store sales growing 1% in the most recent quarter. Their stock price has also rebounded from a low of around $56 in Nov 2015 to around $71 now, an over 25% increase. <\/p>\n

McDonald’s has also seen lower turnover and higher customer-satisfaction scores since raising its average hourly wage to $9.90 from $9.01 in July 2015. McDonald’s has also seen their stock jump over 25% since they increased wages.<\/p>\n

Some say that a higher wage for minimum wage or low wage workers will cause jobs to be lost and higher costs. The wage increase benefits can offset the negatives, obviously shown with the increase in stock price and better well-being of workers. Sure, there is a ceiling for how high a minimum wage should be, but when workers can’t survive working full time at or near the minimum wage while a company makes millions or billions in profits then there is a disconnect. For too many years wages were kept down thinking that will help the bottom line. But there is a happy medium where decent wages and company performance go hand in hand.<\/p>\n

Another rule that is being updated on December 1st of this year will also mean some changes to the wages and working hours. Any salaried white-collar manager making $47,476 a year or less will have to get paid overtime for any hours worked over 40 hours. Previously, the amount was $23,660. The rule hasn’t been updated since the 1970s to reflect current wages. <\/p>\n

Some companies took advantage of the rule not changing since the 1970s by making their workers work extra hours with no extra pay. If a salaried worker worked 40 hours at $23,660 annually it averages $11.38 an hour. If they work 60 hours it comes out to $7.58 an hour, even less than some state’s minimum wage. The new higher minimum of $47,476 comes out to $15.22 an hour when figuring in a 60 hour work week. For some managers to get paid either amount it is a pittance for what they have to do.<\/p>\n

Workers have to perform very specific duties to meet the overtime exemption. The employee\u2019s job duties must primarily involve executive, administrative, or professional duties as defined by the regulations.<\/p>\n

The Labor Department estimates an additional 4.2 million executive, administrative and professional workers who earn above the old threshold but below the new one will be entitled to time-and-a-half wages for each hour they work beyond 40 a week.<\/p>\n

So what will be the outcome of the changes? Rather than pay time and a half for overtime, those extra hours could go into hiring another worker. Some companies may balk at the changes and pay those employees just above the minimum and still make them work more hours without getting paid overtime. <\/p>\n

It could also mean increasing the pay for some substantially. <\/p>\n

Workers should be paid for the hours worked. Salaries are based on 40 hours of work. Sure, a company can make you work 60 or 80 hours a week and not get compensated for it, but what does that say about the company? People will burn out and studies have shown that working all those extra hours increases the chances of mistakes and harms productivity. There needs to be a good work\/life balance for obvious reasons. <\/p>\n

Some companies may feel that they can’t afford the consequences of the rule. Or maybe they can afford it, but they just don’t want to cut into their profits and bonuses. Some may switch their workers to hourly which can affect a worker’s benefits.<\/p>\n

If companies restrict hours so that overtime won’t be paid, some work may just not get done too. Customer service will suffer. Anyone that has gone to a restaurant or store and has had to deal with poor service most likely won’t go back, so it could affect business. Workers know when they are being taken advantage of and companies will eventually suffer from poor morale and high turnover. Companies that do the right thing will find a win-win in it all just like Wal-Mart found out.<\/p>\n
