\nThe Ahold (Stop & Shop, Giant, Martin’s) and Delhaize (Food Lion and Hannaford) supermarket merger required 86 stores to be sold to meet FTC parameters. Here are the changes:<\/p>\n

\u2022Weis Markets will purchase and convert 38 Food Lion stores in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
\n\u2022Supervalu will buy 22 Food Lion stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia and convert them to Shop \u2018N Save.
\n\u2022Florida-based Publix plans to purchase ten Martin\u2019s stores in the Richmond, Virginia area.
\n\u2022Massachusetts\u2019 Big Y is buying eight Hannaford locations in eastern Massachusetts.
\n\u2022Tops Markets will buy one Stop & Shop store in Massachusetts, three others in New York as well as two New York Hannaford locations.

\nCOUPON USAGE DOWN<\/strong>
\nCoupon usage has gone down to a 40-year low! In 2015, according to Inmar, 2.5 billion out of the 321 billion coupons distributed in 2015 were redeemed. The last time there were that many coupons redeemed was in 1976 and in that year there were about 40 billion coupons distributed. It was also down 13% from 2014. Coupon usage peaked in 1992 when 7.9 billion coupons were redeemed. <\/p>\n

There are a few reasons for the drop. One being that coupons expire much more quickly than in the past. The average expiration date was 2 months in 2015. I remember when coupons usually expired in 6 months if at all! Many had no expiration dates.<\/p>\n

Another is that many coupons now require a purchase of 2 items as shown by the average purchase requirement being 1.45 items in 2015.<\/p>\n

Another reason is that most coupons are for non-food items. About 63% of coupons were for non-food items in 2015. I’ve noticed it because when I sort my coupons I always have lots of shampoo, lotion, dental care, and digestive product coupons. I rarely get pizza, TV dinner, and baking product coupons in the coupon inserts anymore.<\/p>\n

Also, the coupon rule-tightening has had an adverse affect on couponing. Much of it is due to the Extreme Couponing show that caused stores to limit the number of coupons used.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Dads, our exchange daughter left back for Austria the other week. After we got back from dropping her off with some emotional goodbyes I get a message from our previous Lake County Captains player that we hosted, Sicnarf Loopstock. He was back with the team and wanted to stay with us. We thought we were getting a breather after hosting Daisy. However, we realized that we were being sent a message from above, so we decided to host him again. Our empty nest didn’t take long to fill!<\/p>\n

I told him I hope he doesn’t stay long, meaning I want him to do well enough to move back up a level. Sure enough, this past weekend he got called back up to High A Lynchburg. <\/p>\n

\nFINGERLAKES<\/strong>
\nWe decided that we needed a little getaway for us so we planned a trip to the Fingerlakes. We love it up there. Very beautiful and with over 100 wineries we knew we could relax on our trip. That was short-lived on one of the days we were hitting the wineries.<\/p>\n

As I pulled out of one of the wineries I noticed a warning light pop up on the dashboard display. We pull into a parking lot of a distillery there and sure enough, my one tire was going flat. By the time I got the spare tire out (luckily, the spare didn’t need air), the tire was completely flat. That was close! I swapped out the tire and afterwards washed my filthy hands at the distillery. If there was not a more approriate time to say I need a drink I don’t know what would. We had a free tasting coupon for the place so I had a few stiff drink tastings to ease the stress level. We got lucky too because about five minutes later it started to pour rain. <\/p>\n

Speaking of the free tasting coupons, our B&B had about a couple dozen of them they gave us. The B&B, Barristers in Waterloo, was a little pricey, but was worth it because a gourmet 3 course breakfast was included and the freebie coupons saved us tons. They included discounts off wine at some wineries and cheese tasting coupons too. The coupons alone probably paid for the room itself.<\/p>\n

One of the wine trails, the Cuyuga wine trail, had a booklet that also offered discounts and free tasting coupons. It cost $15, normally $20. It was a perfect match because the coupons offered by the B&B and the booklet were different from each other. Some people get a coupon book for each person, but we didn’t need two because we split tastings. <\/p>\n

A few wineries stood out from the others. We found some great reds at McGregor and Long Point wineries. McGregor has a Roby Roy Red and a Black Russian made with Superavi grapes that are native to Georgia (not the U.S., but next to the Ukraine) that is rare here in the U.S. and tastes like a high end meritage from California. Long Point has some estate reds and brings in juice from other regions for their Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and others, but wow were they spectacular. For whites check out Lamoreux Landing. Love their Chardonnay. Dr. Frank is great too. <\/p>\n
