\nSTORE GRADES<\/strong>
\nIt’s time for my annual grades for area stores. So which stores have the best saving programs this past year? Which ones improved and which ones did worse? The grades are weighted most on which have the best deals, but also takes into consideration service, staffing, and other factors that help your pocketbook. In essence, the stores I go to the most are the ones rated the highest.<\/p>\n

This past year most stores stayed the same or moved up or down a grade very little. Stores are just not offering as many deals as they used to in the past. Ever since the Extreme Couponing show went on the air the stores have tightened up on their deals and rules. <\/p>\n

You may be surprised that I have listed Giant Eagle with the highest grade. It’s a store where I can save around 70% and more on a consistent basis, mostly due to double coupons. Many folks think their everyday prices are high. Maybe back some years ago they were, but not so much anymore. With Giant Eagle’s other numerous savings programs that other stores don’t have or aren’t as good as, it bubbles them up to the top. And just because a store is known to have low prices in the past doesn’t mean they are still low. Marc’s and Wal-Mart’s prices aren’t as good as they used to be. Also, those stores don’t have sales per se. Just supposed everyday low prices. They also don’t have any loyalty program deals and double coupons like Giant Eagle does. Huge difference.<\/p>\n

Some folks are very loyal to their stores, but if you could get better deals at another store would they go there? We’re creatures of habit and probably shop at the same stores that we’ve shopped at for years and years. I always like to check out stores to see if they’ve gotten better (or worse). I don’t want to miss out on deals! Also, a box of Cheerios is the same at every store, so some items are all the same. Outside of the boxed or packaged items, the selection of meats, produce, and deli can make the difference to some consumers. Those consumers most likely put more of an emphasis on quality than cost though. All fine and dandy, but when people have limited income they have to find stores with the best deals.<\/p>\n

Back ten years ago the rewards\/rebate programs were much different. There were many more rebate programs with lots of great rebates. Back then you were able to get more razors, shampoo, and hair color for free too. I could use hair color now that my hair is getting grayer!<\/p>\n

Many stores churn through employees as the economy has gotten better. Most all stores have a “now hiring” sign. Sometimes it affects the quality of worker some of the stores have. The stores that train and treat their employees the best tend to have better service, especially Costco.<\/p>\n

So if you haven’t been to some of these stores that graded well, give them another chance. You may be surprised that they are cheaper or have better savings programs than the stores you go to now.<\/p>\n

Without further adieu here are the grades from best to worst:<\/p>\n

\nGIANT EAGLE:<\/em> B+<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDouble Coupons up to 99 cents all day, every day.
\n10 cent Fuelperks with every $50 purchase.
\n20 cent Fuelperks at times with gift card purchases.
\nSometimes offer more than 20 cent Fuelperks (did 29 cents on Leap Day in 2016).
\nFuelperk deals when purchasing certain items.
\n4 cent Fuelperk bonus per $50 spent using Giant Eagle credit card.
\nRegister coupons, some for dollars off your next shopping trip.
\nThey offer tons of eOffers (electronic coupons – can’t be doubled).
\nWeekly eAdvantege offer each week – usually a freebie item, sometimes multiple items.
\nLower prices.
\nBOGO deals, including meat
\nDecent amount of blinkie coupon machines in store.
\nBeer and wine rebates in store.
\nFreebies or close to free items most every week with double coupons
\n$30 worth of Fuel savings with transferred prescription coupons.
\nSome free prescriptions.
\nCorrect price guarantee – get first item free if item rings up with the wrong price
\nFree babysitting at Eagle’s Nest at select stores.
\nIf you forget to use a coupon they will take it up to 10 days after the date on the receipt with a loyalty card.
\nFree cookie\/fruit\/snack freebie for kids
\nLower produce prices
\nThey Send $ off $ coupons and other coupons via mail to customers.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nSome prices on non-sale items still high. Lots of people still feel their overall prices are high.
\nEliminated price-matching.
\nNot as many sale items.
\nFewer super deals combining coupons and sale items.
\nLimited like coupons to 5.
\nLimited like internet coupons to 2.
\nRegular price on meat is high.
\nEOffers can’t be stacked with a manufacturer coupon anymore.<\/p>\n

\nCVS:<\/em> B<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nGood amount of Extrabucks deals, especially during Black Friday.
\nUsually something can be had for savings of 70% off or more every week.
\nClearance holiday deals go up to 90% off.
\nExtra coupons given at in-store coupon kiosk.
\nPrescription Extrabuck rewards.
\n$X off $X spent coupons given at times.
\nEarn 2% in Extrabucks rewards on most purchases (given after each quarter).
\n10% Beauty Club Saving reward.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nNot as many Extrabucks freebies as in years past.
\nNot as many $4 off $20 purchase kind of coupons as in years past.
\nNo new extra coupons after initial coupons are printed on the in-store coupon kiosk
\nExtrabucks expire quickly.
\nThey have stopped taking expired Extrabucks.
\nThe regular price on most items are way over-priced.<\/p>\n

\nALDIS:<\/em> B-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nAwesome produce sales
\nNew organic foods
\nSuper fast cashiers – do they give them free Red Bull?
\nDecent dairy deals
\nGreat guarantee program
\nStores are sized for easy in and out.
\nClearance deals.
\nThey take credit cards now!<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nStores look low end.
\nHave to pay for bags.
\nThey don’t take coupons.
\nLimited variety.
\nLimited stock.
\nHave to pay for cart.
\nMostly store brand.
\nRun out of produce quickly.<\/p>\n

\nRITE AID:<\/em> B –<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nPlenti Points program offers numerous deals each week.
\nPlenti Points expire in 2 years and not 2 weeks.
\nI like that you can get more than one offer on most of the deals.
\nEnough deals to keep you coming back each week on a good variety of items.
\nElectronic coupons can be loaded to your card from their site.
\nSome gift card deals with their Plenti Points program.
\nAdditional discounts with each reward level reached
\nStarting Point rewards program offers additional savings.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nVery few freebie deals with Plenti Points.
\nVery few freebies as compared to past reward programs.
\nThe regular price on some items are way over-priced.
\nOld UP reward and rebate program offered more and better deals.
\nRestrictive coupon rules (one coupon on BOGO deals).<\/p>\n

\nBUEHLERS:<\/em> C+<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDouble Coupons up to 99 cents all day, every day.
\nGood quality, similar to Heinens.
\nRewards program offering points for purchases that can get redeemed for rewards.
\nFuel rewards with Speedway where available.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nEveryday prices are high.<\/p>\n

\nMARCS:<\/em> C+<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nOk everyday low prices (used to be better).
\nOk produce prices (used to be better).
\nGift card deals like the 10 cents off a gallon of Speedway gas and 2% off other gift cards.
\nGood closeout deals.
\nLocally owned.
\nDiscounted newspapers.
\nTesting taking credit cards at stores.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nNo super deals like you can get at Giant Eagle on a consistent basis.
\nNo real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
\nSome hot deals in ad.
\nNo Rewards program.
\nMeat quality questionable.
\nNo double coupons.<\/p>\n

\nDAVES SUPERMARKET:<\/em> C<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDouble Coupons up to 99 cents all day, every day.
\nStores are sized for easy in and out.
\nBuy $100 in gift cards, get $10 Dave’s gift card.
\nLocally owned.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nEveryday prices can be high.
\nMinimal savings rewards programs.<\/p>\n

\nDOLLAR STORES:<\/em> C<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nMost all now take coupons.
\nClearance items can be very low priced.
\nThey have $5 off $25 (or other amounts) coupons at times.
\nSome offer rewards savings.
\nSome discounted newspapers.
\nCan find a store everywhere.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nItems can be cheap, but also cheaply made.
\nLimited selection.<\/p>\n

\nSEARS\/KMART:<\/em> C<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nShop Your Way Rewards program offers various savings. This year there were 100% back deals at Sears.
\nAt times KMart offers super double coupons with up to $2 coupons doubling (but there is a limit of 5 double coupons with a $25 purchase).
\nThey have a decent amount of $10 off $50 coupons or the like for certain category items (lawn, clothing, etc.) that can be loaded onto your card online or printed through the ShopYourWay rewards program.
\nElectronic coupons can be loaded online.
\nAt times they have Friends and Family private sales for Shop Your Way Rewards members.
\nOk clearance sales.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nYou only get 5 doubles at KMart.
\nNot as many stores means you have to spend more on gas to get to their stores.
\nThey don’t send an ad to my house anymore because…they closed most of the stores close to me.
\nStock can be lacking.
\nRewards have to be loaded all the time and many of them are for high amount purchases such as a $50 purchase or more.<\/p>\n

\nHEINENS:<\/em> C-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDecent dollar sales
\nIf you want to feel elite, this is the store.
\nNew downtown store!
\nLocally owned.
\nHigh quality.
\nValet grocery program.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nEveryday prices are high.
\nLimited deals.
\nNo double coupons.
\nNo gas rewards.
\nThey are all about quality, but a box of Cheerios is the same at Marcs, Giant Eagle, Dollar Stores, etc. Aside from the bakery, prepared foods, and meats the rest of what they sell for the most part is just like any other store. But if you did a blind taste test on even those items, could you figure out which store they came from?
\nValet grocery program doesn’t allow carts out of the store. Can slow down leaving store. However, valet service can be a plus.<\/p>\n

\nOFFICEMAX\/OFFICE DEPOT:<\/em> C-<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nMaxperks program offers deals through the year, especially school season.
\nAllow multiple limits on Maxperk deals.
\nHave $10 off $40 coupons or the like every so often.
\nStore personel are always asking if I need help.
\nOnline additional discounts given such as $X of $X deals
\nMaxPerks members get 5% back in rewards on their purchases.
\nSome online coupons.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nMaxperks deals were mostly just for paper.
\nVery few Maxperks deals, especially from a couple years ago.
\nMostly just paper items.
\nThe Maxperks value gets adjusted if coupons or additional discounts are used.
\nNo deals over Black Friday like there were in the past.<\/p>\n

\nWAREHOUSE CLUBS:<\/em> D+<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDecent Quality.
\nLots of freebie food stations.
\nCostco treats their employees right.
\nGood deals on non-grocery items like tires and some on travel and other items.
\nSome offer store coupons (BJ’s does – Costco, Sam’s Club doesn’t).
\nOther programs such as travel deals offers additional savings.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nYou have to pay to shop there.
\nYou have to buy in humongous bulk sizes.
\nMany of which may get thrown out because it spoils before getting used.
\nMost don’t take coupons (BJ’s does).
\nNo ads in newspapers.<\/p>\n

\nWAL-MART:<\/em> D+<\/strong>
\nIn 2015, Walmart placed last among department and discount stores in the American Customer Satisfaction Index again, the eleventh year in a row they have taken last place or tied for last. So it’s no wonder customers are upset about shelves not being stocked and not enough cashiers at Wal-mart. On the plus side they did give large raises to everyone so I’d expect the score to improve. <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nCoupon can earn overage (credit).
\nThey price match online (limited).
\nNew Savings Catcher app will find the best price of items.
\nGave workers well-deserved raises.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nNo real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
\nEveryday low prices not as good as it used to be.
\nVery high produce prices.
\nThey don’t double coupons.
\nTheir fuel reward program isn’t very good.
\nNo other reward programs.
\nShelves are usually not fully stocked.
\nNot enough employees at registers, etc.
\nBehemoth stores are way too big – if you forget something you have to take a commuter plane just to get to the other side of the store
\nToo much of what they sell is from China when it used to be mostly U.S. products.
\nThey did away with ad price matching.
\nRarely put ads in newspapers .<\/p>\n

\nSTAPLES: <\/em>D <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nSchool deals were ok.
\nSome good Staples Rewards (Easy Rebates) deals, mostly for paper…uh, like almost only for paper every week.
\nEasy to fill out the rebates online (Easy Rebates).
\nOnline coupons.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nA lot less deals again this past year, especially over Black Friday weekend.
\nSchool deals were minimal.
\nI think they focused on wanting to merge with Office Depot\/Max more than wanting to give customers great deals.<\/p>\n

\nWALGREENS: <\/em>D <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nTheir Register Rewards offers freebies or decent deals at times.
\nThey have a Balance Points Rewards program that offers some savings.
\nBonus Balance Points rewards with a specific amount purchased offered at times.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nHardly any great deals.
\nVery few Register Rewards deals unless you need Trolli candy.
\nNew Balance Rewards program stinks – savings usually minimal and you usually have to buy more than one item.
\nCan only use one manufacturer coupon per item (Register Reward is considered a manufacturer coupon).
\nCoupons are being beeped at the register due to vague coupon rules.
\nRegisters constantly beep when scanning valid coupons.
\nNo Register Reward or additional Balance Reward deals for Thanksgiving week\/Black Friday deals.
\nThey are becoming a store that gives no reason for couponers to shop there.
