\nPARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE<\/strong>
\nI had my first parent-teacher conference this past week. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Our foreign exchange student from Portugal, Rita, has been doing great getting almost straight A’s, so I’m sure the teachers would just tell me how great she is, blah, blah, blah. How someone can go to a new country and ace classes in a language that is not their primary language I don’t know. I brought my Trapper Keeper with me to take notes on what each teacher said. <\/p>\n

I wasn’t sure if I’d see some turf wars going on with the Jets and Sharks at the school either. I wore my leather jacket and rolled up jeans with white socks in case some of them or any burnouts wanted to know not to mess with me. I also brought my gang signal translation dictionary in case I needed to read any gang signs if there were any hanging out around the school. <\/p>\n

My first task was to make sure I make a good impression. I brought each teacher something I had in excess at home so I brought a banana, toilet paper, and a box of multi-grain Cheerios cereal for each. <\/p>\n

I met the math teacher and was hoping he didn’t give me some math equation before he spoke with me. I had written down Pythagorean’s Theorum on a piece of paper just in case he asked. She’s acing the math class – way over 100 and the smartest kid in the class. She was at a much higher level of math and should’ve been put in a tougher math class. Probably should’ve enrolled her in Advanced Abacus. <\/p>\n

Another class is her Family Living class. They have to carry a baby around that is programmed to know when you attend to it when it’s crying and if you drop it or anything like that. The teacher said at the start of the class most of the kids in the class are big on having kids but at the end of the semester the percentage goes way down on how many want kids and the number of kids they want. In other words they find out kids aren’t hamsters.<\/p>\n

Rita wants to be an architect. I asked her Art teacher if she’s got talent and he said’ “Oh, yes!”. I knew that already, but I wanted to see if his critical eye thought so too. She already sketched the Willoughby Hills buildings for the mayor and it looked great. Perhaps I should ask her to draw a picture of me with my robe and corn cob pipe while I’m cutting out coupons and sipping some Cognac on Sunday morning. <\/p>\n

The English teacher said she was getting a D. I almost reached across the desk and shook her. She then explained that it was because she needed to turn in an assignment which should get her to an A or B once she completes it. I composed myself and with a wink I offered her five quarters and a nickel (it was all the change I had) to see that she does get that A. <\/p>\n

The American History teacher wasn’t there. Instead there was a different teacher that looked like Dr C Everett Koop. The lights were out in the class and I’m not sure why. Maybe it was the janitor for all I knew. He was in a suit so he looked legit. I didn’t stay long at all. I backed out of the classroom slowly.<\/p>\n

The HTML Multi-Media class she’s taking I think is the equivalent of the typewriter class I took in high school. My how the days of our technological breakthough of the erasable ink pen – which I thought was the greatest invention on earth – have things changed since I went to high school. <\/p>\n

I then roamed the halls looking for the Glee kids to see them dance and sing. I’m sure it happens every half hour in every high school just like it is on TV. I just had to find them. After about two hours looking for them I gave up. While looking I did find the old cast of Cop Rock hanging out in the teachers lounge.<\/p>\n
