\nSTORE CLOSINGS <\/strong>
\nLook for another spate of store closing after last year when store closing announcements more than tripled to about 7,000, a record, according to Fung Global Retail and Technology. There have been over 660 bankruptcy filings in the retail sector in 2017, up 30% from the same period last year.<\/p>\n

K-Mart and Sears are the first big stores to announce a large amount of store closings at over 100 total.<\/p>\n

Retail employment fell by around 36,000 jobs in 2017 even though unemployment dropped. If you drive around town you will still see many stores with ‘now hiring’ signs. The labor pool has had an effect with baby boomers retiring and teen labor participation rates dropping from nearly 60% in the late 70s to around 35% nowadays.<\/p>\n

Amazingly, occupancy rates at the nation’s malls was 92.5% in 2017 even as many major retailers closed their flagship stores at malls.<\/p>\n

In Northeast Ohio, we saw some old malls get turned over into Amazon Distribution Centers. Those being Randall Park Mall and Euclid Square Mall. It’s ironic how an online business replaced a brick and mortar mall.<\/p>\n

\nFORGIVENESS <\/strong>
\nSo how were your holidays? Enjoyable? Did it stir up old family hurt and discord? Anyone bring up politics? Like most families there is usually some family drama during the holidays. Even as adults we can’t always get over past slights or hurtful words or actions. Some are tougher to get over than others, so how do you get over it and become a happy family once again? Forgiveness is one way.
\n

\nHow can you forgive if the person keeps doing the same thing that caused the fracture in the first place? In Matthew 18:21, Peter asked Jesus: \u201cLord, how many times should I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cI tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven!\u201d The expression \u201cseventy times seven\u201d in the Hebrew tradition means \u201cinfinity\u201d or \u201ceternally\u201d. In other words, Jesus was telling Peter that we should always forgive those who have hurt us and not set a limit. <\/p>\n

Some people shut out those that hurt them after a few times of getting stabbed in the back. After all, does evil ever change? Who wants to keep getting hurt after all. That’s not the point though. It’s about loving one another, faults and all. We all have faults and different levels of stubbornness.<\/p>\n

Here’s the key though. It not all about getting emotionally beat up. It is also about the other person repenting. In other words, they have to feel regret or contrition about their actions. Here is a bible passage that explains it: “So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying \u2018I repent,’ you must forgive them.”” Luke 17:3-4<\/p>\n

So when it says ‘rebuke’ it means to criticize them sharply. In other words, let them know what they are doing that is causing an issue. Some people don’t let the other person know what is wrong. Sometimes because they don’t want to deal with the backlash telling the person. However, how can they fix what they don’t know is wrong?! Once the seeds of thought are planted, hopefully it will germinate so that they stop that behavior and seek repentance. Yes, some people will get defensive. Just remember that you would want the same.<\/p>\n

It can be hard forgiving some people. Sometimes people want to protect their feelings. Understandable. However, what are the wages of not forgiving? In the bible it says: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15<\/p>\n

This verse also sums it up nicely: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:31-32<\/p>\n

\nKITTEN SHINANIGANS <\/strong>
\nOur kittens, Laurra and Mr Dazzles, are in the fetch stage right now. Our other cats had one too. They bring over one of their toys and we throw it. They bring it back. We throw it again. That goes on for awhile until they get bored and want to do something else like Sodoku puzzles.<\/p>\n

We also found out that they have been up on the kitchen counter. They aren’t allowed on any table and they get a verbal scolding if they try to do it when we are around. Not like they understand English. They do seem to know when we are upset.<\/p>\n

So how we discovered they were up on the counter was that we found some baby carrots that were on a plate on the counter were found underneath the washer and dryer…downstairs. Apparently the carrots make a great toy for them to bat around. One day I’m expecting to catch them working on my laptop while sipping my cold coffee.

\nThe other day I also heard some bapping around in the Dining room. It didn’t sound right. So I go over to see what was going on. There I see Mr Dazzles jumping many feet in the air to possibly get on top of the aquarium. First, I will have to say I was impressed with his jumping ability. I didn’t want to tell him that. Then I made sure I let him know not to do that ever again. Again, I don’t think he understands English all that well, but my tone should have gotten the point across. He did scamper off onto one of the dining room chairs, so I think her got the message. Either that or he was waiting for me to leave so that he could jump on top of the aquarium.<\/p>\n
