\nWINTER CRUISE <\/strong>
\nI was looking for a deal for a vacation for awhile, especially to get out of the winter cold for a bit. We were looking mostly for a cruise on Royal Caribbean since we were close to moving up another level in their rewards program. I found a great deal at the end of last year on http:\/\/www.vacationstogo.com<\/a> for a balcony for a 7 night cruise out of Puerto Rico at the beginning of April. It was only $393. We wanted to go there to see the Indians play, but they were playing there in the middle of April. So I had to pass.<\/p>\n

Then I came across a deal for a suite for only $673 for the same cruise. That\u2019s unheard of for a 7 day cruise. Again, we wanted to go there for the games so as enticing as it was I had to pass again.<\/p>\n

Then I stated to kick myself since all the prices started to go up after the first of the year. Instead of finding cruises for an inside cabin for under $400 for a 7 day cruise they were now around $500 or more. Still a great deal, but now I knew I would be paying more.<\/p>\n

I kept looking. I decided to check for deals for other cruiselines. I saw a deal on Norwegian. A 10 day cruise for $409! I\u2019m thinking at that price they may have me work on the ship in the kitchen or cleaning rooms. Nope. It was legit. An inside cabin for $409.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the kicker. It was only guaranteed for 4 hours. I had to make sure I had an ok from work to travel and same with my wife. The flight left the next week! We got the oks and had to move onto the next steps.

\nI then wanted to make sure the flight wouldn\u2019t eat up all the savings. The cruise was out of Miami. I bopped around and found some deals. Some were flights to Fort Lauderdale so I would have to pay quite a bit to get a ride to Miami. I then found one that was for a non-stop flying there (necessary during the winter) and a one-stop back home for a princely sum of only $249 round-trip! Hot bananas! <\/p>\n

I called the cruiseline to find out more about the cruise before I finalized the flight and cruise. When I called the agent said he just booked someone on the same cruise. That clued me in that the deal was hot. I then asked about other levels up like a balcony. He said that the ship was now sold out! I now had about 2 hours to decide whether I wanted to book it. I had the last reservation at the super low price. When these deals pop up they go fast and prices jump once they are booked. It happened once before when I went on an 8 day cruise to Europe and the price dropped from over $900 to around $600-some dollars. Later in the day it went back up to over $800.<\/p>\n

After talking to my wife about it we went back and forth. We weren\u2019t getting the points for Royal Caribbean. I kept coming back to what a great the cruise was though and being the middle of winter it was the perfect time to miss about two weeks of it. I didn\u2019t know the next time I would find a great deal. So we decided to go on the cruise with about 45 minutes to spare before we lost the reservation.<\/p>\n

For the flight we booked with American Airlines, so there wouldn’t be a ton of additional fees like the low-cost airlines charge. However, they do charge $25 for our first checked bag…that was until I found a deal to undo it. While booking the flight on American Airlines I noticed a great bonus mileage deal for their credit card. Get 60,000 points when you open a card and spend $3,000 within three months. My wife got approved and voila! Free checked luggage for us too! Plus, unlike some low-cost airlines, should the flight get cancelled they will re-book you on a partner, if they don’t have flights themselves that can get you there that day.<\/p>\n

\nSo we get to the airport and check our bags. I had some tennis shoes and I put them in my bag. It made it 51.5 pounds. Over the limit. She says she can do one pound over and that\u2019s it. I took out my Indians hat. Bingo! Now it\u2019s 51 pounds.<\/p>\n

Off to the TSA line we go! The line was a little long. It did move ok. It costs $85 for 5 years to get TSA precheck. Some credit cards will credit the fee. <\/p>\n

I found some people in the line interesting. One lady had so much face makeup on that she had that tan face, white neck thing going on. One guy was looking at people creepily. Always people watching.<\/p>\n

We get in the line to put our luggage and stuff on the belt so I took off all my clothes and put in the bin. They said no, I didn\u2019t have to. I keep forgetting that the TSA isn\u2019t so strict.<\/p>\n

We then went over to the United Club for free food and drinks. Yep, I had two freebie cards for the United Club from our United credit card.<\/p>\n

\nOur cruise was out of Miami. We always get there a couple days early so that we don\u2019t miss out on getting on the cruise ship. Winter weather can cause delays to the point we could miss the cruise. One precaution was not to fly a budget airline. Airlines like Frontier, Spirit, and Allegiant usually only have one flight a day to a destination. If it gets delayed or cancelled you are usually out of luck because they don\u2019t have affiliations with other airlines (partners) where they could move you to other flights. If the next days flight is full you still have to wait. One time a sister-in-law got a cheap flight on Frontier only to not to go on the trip because of exactly that happening.<\/p>\n

\nHere\u2019s another great deal that clinched the trip. Best Western had a promo where they gave members 10,000 points, enough to book a free night at one of their hotels. It had to be before January 31st. I had 5,600 points already. I could buy enough points to get another free night and using the points I already had for just $45. So two nights for only $45! Pork Chops and applesauce!
\nRestaurant.com<\/a> gift certificates for a handful of restaurants on Miami Beach. I called each to make sure they were taking them. The one I called said they were no longer taking them. She then said to come on in and she would give us two free drinks. Hey now! It\u2019s been awhile since I had a lady buy me drinks, so yeah! We made a stop there and sure enough I got two drinks free!<\/p>\n

We took Uber to the beach for around $15. We could have taken a bus for much cheaper, but it would take almost an hour longer. With no smartphone we were able to do it using the hotel Wi-Fi and a tablet. On the way back it was only about $8 because we pooled with other people going back. The two guys that pooled back with us were from Columbus!<\/p>\n

Usually cruiselines charge you around $16 per person for transfers from the airport to the cruise ship. The hotel had a deal for $25 total that we took. Not knowing if Uber would have surge pricing I didn’t want to chance taking it on the day of the cruise.<\/p>\n

The cruise stopped in Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao.

\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\nNot having enough time to fully vet the cruise deals and all I did find out that Norwegian charges lots for internet and drink packages. On Royal Caribbean I got internet and an all-you-can-drink package (up to $13 a drink) for $52 total on our last cruise. Super deal, especially since it included tip and my wife didn\u2019t have to get it too. On Norwegian they charge $106 (includes tax) per day! My wife would have had to get the package too. It would have cost almost three times of the cruise price! We did find other options though.<\/p>\n

For a $15 corkage fee I could bring as much wine on the ship as I wanted (no liquor is allowed). We brought a bottle of wine for each night! Ten bottles! So it cost $150 which was much cheaper than any drink or wine bottle plan. They did have deals for wine bottles that pretty much averaged a charge of $30 (included tip). Not much of a deal.<\/p>\n

We had to get a few more bottles of wine to get to ten and I went shopping for them. I found two bottles of wine at a CVS in Miami Beach. It was Clos De Bois Merlot at a price of $8.99 and when you buy two they gave me $4 in Extrabucks! The wine was on sale too as it was originally $16.99.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a trick to make sure your bottles don\u2019t break in your luggage \u2013 wrap them in a tube sock. That way if they shift in the luggage they are still protected. Stuff them in the middle to and away from the edges of the luggage. Point the neck of the bottle away from the bottom of the luggage.<\/p>\n

\nIn Miami Beach we had to stop at the Dash store. It’s the store the train-wreck Kardashians own. Not much in the store…insert your own joke here.<\/p>\n

Internet cost $29.99 per day for unlimited minutes (or $299.99 for the whole trip). Way too expensive. They had a package for 150 minutes for $75 and 250 minutes for $125. They offered extra minutes if I signed up the first day or two and for being a past guest, so I signed up for the minutes package. I did get free Wi-Fi on the island at restaurants. One thing really bummed me out on the trip. I love to play volleyball. When I was looking for cruises we didn\u2019t go one of them because I found out it didn\u2019t have a basketball\/volleyball court. Playing volleyball, besides enjoying it, helps me burn the million calories I eat on the ship. They had a basketball court and when we were walking around I found it and saw that the net protection on top of it was real low. I couldn\u2019t see how volleyball could be played. I then found out they didn\u2019t have volleyball games. Total bummer. I couldn\u2019t even find a volleyball pickup game on the islands too.<\/p>\n

I ended up playing some soccer on the ship. There are always a lot of international people on cruises and they love to play soccer. I played in a tournament and we won. We had a Brazlian our team and the other team had someone from Chile and Canada and they were all like Pele to me. They moved around the ball like it was magnetically attached to their foot. I did score a goal from before half-court. Not too shabby for an old fart as most were around 20-something. The older guys eventually played goalie to rest up.<\/p>\n

There are lots of trivia contests on the ship. We won the ABBA trivia contest getting 19 out of 20. We won a pen. Weemp whomp.<\/p>\n

We stopped in Grand Cayman for our first destination. We walked over to 7 mile beach and spent the day there. They had a beach restaurant with beach lounge chairs at a place called Hemingways. Usually they charge $5 to $15 per chair. They didn\u2019t charge anything! Had the freshest sushi there I ever ate too.

\nI went snorkeling and quickly came across a stingray. It was huge. A turtle stirred up another stingray, a smaller yellow-spotted stingray, that was hidden in the sand.<\/p>\n

\nWe also negotiated a deal for a jet ski. The water was pretty smooth so I was able to max out the speed on it to around 45 mph.<\/p>\n

I went shopping for a polo shirt and the best I was finding was in the $20 to $24 range, even after trying to negotiate a deal. Then I stopped in a shop outside of the dock complex. In the store it smelled like someone there had been smoking a bit too much of the island reefer. I think that was to my advantage. I asked the worker how much the polo shirts were since I couldn’t find a price on them. He said $10! It was a nice embroidered polo and my size. I found another one that was white that I liked. There was a little stain on it that I’m sure can get washed out. I pointed it out to him and asked him what he can do on the price for it. He said $5. Sold! So if you go into a store and it has a “distinct” smell you may get a bonanza of deals just for asking.<\/p>\n

\nOur next stop was Jamaica. We went to a place called Bamboo beach. It was about an hour drive near Ochos Rios. There were parts of the ride that I thought we were going to get pancaked by another car. They love to pass slower cars even when traffic is coming the other way. One part of the road was even washed away by the ocean. We drove by where Usian Bolt grew up and where Bob Marley was buried. I learned that Bob Marley died of cancer. Apparently in the Rastafarian religion they don\u2019t allow parts of the body to be taken off, including cancer, and that did him in.<\/p>\n

From there we went to Aruba. More snorkeling and beach time. We took the local bus. Only $5 for a roundtrip ticket. I\u2019d recommend taking the bus for economical travel. Taxis can sometimes be very cheap too.
\n

\nWe wanted to see our Lake County Captains player, Sicnarf Loopstok, that we hosted as he lived in Aruba. He was still playing winter ball for the Cleveland Indians, so we missed out on seeing him.<\/p>\n

\nThe next island was Curacao. Beautiful town. It has Dutch origins. Maximizing our beach time we went to a beach called Playa Porto Marie. On the way there we took pictures of pink flamingos at a bird sanctuary. Great choice as the snorkeling was decent and drinks were great. Using our no transaction fee credit card the conversion price was better than if we tried to pay cash. We ran into the local wildlife which were two boars that roamed the beach eating handouts and sleeping on the beach and swimming.<\/p>\n

\nWe took a taxi there for $50 roundtrip and the taxi driver didn\u2019t have us pay until after he picked us up and drove us to the ship, so that was assuring. He even made an extra stop to take picture of the city of Williamsted from a vantage point up high on a mountain.<\/p>\n

\nThere is a swing pontoon bridge that lets people cross the inlet. We were enjoying a mojito when the bell rang that the bridge was going to move. We paid our bill already so we ran to get on it since we didn\u2019t want to get caught having to wait for the bridge to let us cross. We heard that sometimes it can take hours for it to come back. We would have had to take a ferry back. I got up to the bridge and the operator opened it enough for us to get through. We had to get across it though before the other side swung too far from the wall. We made it with seconds to spare.<\/p>\n

We had enough time to enjoy a $1 local beer at a nearby shop before we got on the ship.<\/p>\n

Our last stop was in Bonaire. It is a small country. I stopped at a grocery store there. Most of the grocery stores in the Caribbean have horrible lighting. The prices were usually high. A 2 liter of Coke there was $3.95.<\/p>\n

\nWe walked to a local beach about a mile away. I was snorkeling and taking pictures with my underwater camera when I noticed it was wigging out. Right about that time I saw a barracuda underneath the dock. Somehow water got in the underwater camera. Go figure. It never happened before so I was bummed.<\/p>\n

We met a nice couple from Detroit that we hung out with a lot. It was kinda odd how we got to know each other. We were sitting at our table for dinner the first night and my wife left to go to the bathroom. A guy from a table near us came over and started chatting with me. He said they wanted to sit with other people and they ended up getting sat by themselves, so he asked if they could sit with us. I said sure, however we were getting ready to leave for trivia. There are lots of oddballs on the trip so we were wary, but they turned out to be great.<\/p>\n

We sat with some other couples one night. One was about 70. He said when they started cruising 30 years ago they were one of the youngest couples on the cruise. Now that they are 70 he quipped they were still the youngest on the cruise. Reason being, everyone on this cruise was very old. A couple from Costa Rica we went on an taxi ride with said the same thing. The smell of Geritol was in the air.<\/p>\n

We took the stairs all the time to burn off calories. It was hard getting an elevator as it was. There was a lot of slow-moving traffic too, so I felt like I was a running back cutting left and right through a porous Cleveland Browns defense. Instead of carrying a football I was usually carrying a plate of food and drinks. <\/p>\n

There were a lot of Serbians, Croatians, and Macedonians working on the ship. I was able to brush up on my Croatian some when I tried to speak with them. I asked them how long they have to work per day and they said around 10 to 12 hours. <\/p>\n

We made a routine of stopping at the Casino each night. We set a limit of $20 each to gamble per night. Once we won we cashed out. It wasn\u2019t easy to walk away after winning and having more to gamble, but we pretty much stuck with the plan. In the end we won a few hundred bucks! I played slots. I picked ones that were located in high traffic and visible areas. Casinos like to make them winning machines to generate excitement.<\/p>\n

\nThe food was ok. I ate tons of seafood. No lobster night. That was disappointing. Coffee was awesome. I ate a ton. One thing I didn\u2019t have through the whole trip was pop. No Pepsi. No Coke. Mostly just water and fermented liquids. I didn\u2019t notice any withdrawals from pop except I could now eat Pop Rocks and not explode.<\/p>\n

We saw some porpoises next to the ship. Lots of flying fish.<\/p>\n

We found out what they did with all the uneaten food. Apparently they pelletize the food and dump it in the ocean when they are far out at sea. So somewhere there is tuna eating buffalo wings, cookies, and pasta which in turn we are eating the tuna. I knew there was a reason I like the taste of my Starkist tuna pouches.<\/p>\n
