\nUP AND DOWN <\/strong>
\nHave you noticed a lot of ups and downs recently with economic indicators, especially at a time when things should be improving? Let me try to explain partly what is happening. Being prepared financially and knowing what is on the horizon will help weather financial storms. <\/p>\n

Have you seen how much the mortgage rates have increased? They’ve gone up a lot. A 30-year fixed mortgage reached 4.38%, a 4-year high. That’s about a percent higher than a couple years ago. A 15-year fixed mortgage reached 3.84%. It’s also about a percent higher than a couple years ago too. <\/p>\n

With the increase in the Fed interest rate it has caused mortgage interest rates to go up and the expectations are that they will go higher. The Fed sets the interest rate depending on economic market conditions. The increase in the rate has also caused the savings interest rate offered by banks to go up which is good for people that save their money. The highest saving interest rates were around .9% last year and now you can find them as high as around 1.45%. The higher savings interest rates can be found with online banks such as https:\/\/www.discover.com\/<\/a> and https:\/\/www.ally.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In conjunction, inflation is increasing which means everything will cost more. Inflation has been low for many years because the Fed kept the interest rate low to spur the economy after the Great Recession. The Fed interest rate has been increasing the past couple years with the economy improving which is typically done to even out the economy. Increasing bond yields is also tied to the rising Fed rate which has spooked some investors. <\/p>\n

Unless wages keep up with or exceed inflation, which for the most part they haven’t except for the rich, most everything will be more expensive and negate any increase in wages. The payroll tax was cut, so everyone’s paycheck increased recently which will help offset an increase in inflation. The cut was meant to be an overall increase though and not lost due to inflation. As the unemployment rate goes down further that should hopefully increase wages as competition for workers increase and as baby boomers retire in droves. Increased wages can also mean increased inflation.
\n

\nThe deficit and debt have increased this past year. The trade deficit was at a 9-year high in December 2017. Those all have negative effects on the economy, especially with less revenue coming in with the tax cuts. The cuts will have to drive businesses to spend in order to reach the goal of 4% GDP and to make up for the $1.5 trillion less the government will get because of the tax cuts. The U.S. GDP was 2.6% in Q4 2017. <\/p>\n

I find it disingenuous that some fiscal conservatives are willing to increase deficits now when their party is in power and when they are not in power they want to reign in spending. It’s kind of like when one party has control of the brakes and another the gas they keep each other in check. Once they get control of both, they drive recklessly. Time to take away the keys!
\n
\nTax cuts during record-low employment could overheat the economy and oddly enough, tilt things in the wrong direction. Hence the reason spending increased over a trillion dollars to heat up a cold economy during the Great Recession. It was very necessary then and not so much now as it could have the opposite effect on the economy. <\/p>\n

For example, recently, tax cuts in Kansas and Oklahoma for businesses hurt the state’s budget so much they had to increase taxes people pay and cut jobs, school funding and other services just to make up for the shortfalls. The tax cuts didn’t have the intended effect in those states. Now the U.S. is doing something similar. There are plans to already cut some basic essential programs to make up for the lost tax revenue of the recent U.S. tax cut. Tax cuts are great, but not if in the end we end up paying for them anyway. What happened in Kansas and Oklahoma are perfect examples of why trickle-down economics doesn’t work.<\/p>\n

The volatile stock market is showing the effects of all this to the point it had a record one-day point drop. No matter. Stocks have gained back pretty much all the losses…for now. The drop in stock prices is surprising with the economy doing well and because the tax cuts that will be used by some companies to prop up their stock price with stock buy-backs. Yet even with the tax cuts many companies announced large layoffs, including Wal-Mart, Amazon, Kimberley Clark, Carrier, GE, and AT&T. You’d think there would be more hiring and not firing now that corporations will have ton more cash!<\/p>\n

Be prepared for the unexpected. I always say the best time to save is when you don’t need to. So when things are good we should be solidifying programs like Social Security and healthcare and building our infrastructure instead of giving tax cuts to companies that are already sitting on record profits and not spending it. It’s like spending money on a boat when you car needs to be replaced.
<\/p>\n

\nFREE OIL CHANGE <\/strong>
\nI found a coupon for a free oil change and safety inspection at Mentor Kia or Mentor Mitsubishi in the News-Herald. I decided to set up an appointment even though the deal sounded too good to be true. Not only was it legit I also got a free car wash too! Not even a disposal fee!<\/p>\n

There have been a few coupons in the News-Herald the past couple weeks. There may be more in upcoming issues. The coupon is good through Feb 28th.<\/p>\n

\nI KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I <\/strong>
\nI got my results back from Ancestry.com<\/a>. I knew already that I was Croatian and Lithuanian, but will the results confirm it? I’m first generation, so there shouldn’t be much of a mix of any other nationalities. Granted my ancestors could have roamed the world and then ended up in Lithuania and Croatia so maybe I had traits from other regions of the world. I was eager to see the results.<\/p>\n

I heard that maybe on my Mom’s side there was family that came from Romania from the Transylvania region. That might explain my fang teeth and years of braces I had to wear to correct it.<\/p>\n

I did do a family tree when I was young and I did get a decent amount of it on paper going back to the early 19th century. Luckily I asked my grandmother and others when they were alive about my family tree and I plotted it.<\/p>\n

One negative about doing the test was that some families have secrets where the results may expose a tryst. Unfortunately, it happens and to no fault of the child. That’s why they have the Cheaters show on TV.<\/p>\n

I did see on TV about two friends in Hawaii that recently found out they were brothers after doing the testing. So would I find out I have other close relatives I didn’t know about?<\/p>\n

The way the results show is in circles in regions that they say show connections. So a smaller circle will show a smaller connection and the biggest circle the most “hits”.
\n

\nSo what were the results? The results said I was Croatian and Lithuanian. Yep, no surprises.
\n

\nSome of the circles showed smaller connections in northern Italy, Czech Republic, and Poland and in nearby countries. They were border countries where some of my ancestors may have lived before settling in a specific region. It’s kind of like how people move from Ohio and then to Florida only to move back to Ohio.<\/p>\n

One of the neat things is that it shows if you do have connections to people that have taken the test. The results show I have a third cousin and it said it was a strong connection. The name I didn’t recognize and I plan to contact him.<\/p>\n

The results of any connections show whether it is strong or not so much. I did have some that showed I had 4th to 6th cousins with a strong connection. There were some listed as 5th to 8th cousins. There were around 60 listed cousins. No first or second cousins and that’s only because the ones I know haven’t taken the test.

\nThe cool thing is that one person did contact me. They were from Massachusetts. I remember my Dad talking to them and saying we had cousins there. I never met them. I recognized the names. We’ve sent some messages back and forth and hopefully I can get to know them better and get invited for Thanksgiving dinner and any family potlucks, whatever a potluck is.
