\nRite Aid is being bought out by Albertsons. That being the portion that Walgreen’s didn’t already buy which is 4,900 stores in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Albertsons will incorporate the Rite Aid pharmacies into their own stores. Nothing as of now as what to expect with the current Rite Aid stores.<\/p>\n

\nTOPS IS BANKRUPT <\/strong>
\nTops has declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Remember them? A total of 169 stores, they are mostly in Pennsylvania and New York. I loved their triple coupons when they were here in the Cleveland area. They still do super doubles every so often which are doubling of $1 coupons.<\/p>\n

\n\"250x250<\/a><\/p>\n

\nSTORE GRADES<\/strong>
\nIt’s time for my annual grades for area stores. So which stores have the best saving programs this past year? Which ones improved and which ones did worse? The grades are weighted most on which have the best deals, but also takes into consideration service, staffing, and other factors that help your pocketbook. In essence, the stores I go to the most are the ones rated the highest.<\/p>\n

This past year most stores stayed the same or moved up or down a grade very little. Stores are just not offering as many deals as they used to in the past. Ever since the Extreme Couponing show went on the air the stores have tightened up on their deals and rules. <\/p>\n

You may be surprised that I have listed Giant Eagle with the highest grade. It’s a store where I can save around 70% and more on a consistent basis, mostly due to double coupons. For instance, last week I bought $24.09 worth of groceries for .36 and this week $138.43 worth of groceries for $32.24! Many folks think their everyday prices are high. Maybe back some years ago they were, but not so much anymore. With Giant Eagle’s other numerous savings programs that other stores don’t have or aren’t as good as, it bubbles them up to the top. And just because a store is known to have low prices in the past doesn’t mean they are still low. Marc’s and Wal-Mart’s prices aren’t as good as they used to be. Also, those stores don’t have sales per se. Just supposed everyday low prices. They also don’t have any loyalty program deals and double coupons like Giant Eagle does. Huge difference. I did drop them a half grade due to their tightening coupon rules.<\/p>\n

Some folks are very loyal to their stores, but if you could get better deals at another store would they go there? We’re creatures of habit and probably shop at the same stores that we’ve shopped at for years and years. I always like to check out stores to see if they’ve gotten better (or worse). I don’t want to miss out on any deals! Also, a box of Cheerios is the same at every store, so some items are all the same. Outside of the boxed or packaged items, the selection of meats, produce, and deli can make the difference to some consumers. Those consumers most likely put more of an emphasis on quality than cost though. All fine and dandy, but when people have limited income they have to find stores with the best deals.<\/p>\n

Back ten years ago the rewards\/rebate programs were much different too. There were many more rebate programs with lots of great rebates. Back then you were able to get more razors, shampoo, and hair color for free too. I could use a box of hair color now that my hair is getting grayer! Take advantage of the stores that offer the deals while it lasts!<\/p>\n

So if you haven’t been to some of these stores that graded well, give them another chance. You may be surprised that they are cheaper or have better savings programs than the stores you go to now.<\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nPlenti Points program offers numerous deals each week (Plenti Points look to be going away).
\nPlenti Points expire in 2 years and not 2 weeks.
\nI like that you can get more than one offer on most of the deals.
\nEnough deals to keep you coming back each week on a good variety of items.
\nElectronic coupons can be loaded to your card from their site.
\nSome gift card deals with their Plenti Points program.
\nAdditional discounts with each reward level reached
\nStarting Point rewards program offers additional savings.

\nGift card deals like the 10 cents off a gallon of Speedway gas and 2% off other gift cards.
\nGood closeout deals.
\nLocally owned.
\nDiscounted newspapers.
\nNow take credit cards.
\nSome hot deals in ad.<\/p>\n

\nNo super deals on a consistent basis.
\nNo real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
\nNo Rewards program.
\nMeat quality questionable.

\nMost all now take coupons.
\nClearance items can be very low priced.
\nThey have $5 off $25 (or other amounts) coupons at times.
\nSome offer rewards savings.
\nSome discounted newspapers.
\nCan find a store everywhere.
\nGreat prices on cards.

\nCons: <\/strong>
\nItems can be cheap, but also cheaply made.
\nLimited selection.<\/p>\n

\nSEARS\/KMART:<\/em> C-<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nShop Your Way Rewards program offers various savings.
\nThey have a decent amount of $10 off $50 coupons or the like for certain category items (lawn, clothing, etc.) that can be loaded onto your card online or printed through the ShopYourWay rewards program.
\nElectronic coupons can be loaded online.
\nAt times they have Friends and Family private sales for Shop Your Way Rewards members.
\nOk clearance sales.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nNo more double coupons, including super doubles at K-Mart.
\nNot as many stores means you have to spend more on gas to get to their stores.
\nThey don’t send an ad to my house anymore because…they closed most of the stores close to me.
\nStock can be lacking.
\nRewards have to be loaded all the time and many of them are for high amount purchases such as a $50 purchase or more.<\/p>\n

\nHEINENS:<\/em> C-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDecent dollar sales
\nIf you want to feel elite, this is the store.
\nNew downtown store!
\nLocally owned.
\nHigh quality.
\nValet grocery program.
\nHalf off sushi on Wednesdays.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nEveryday prices are high.
\nLimited deals.
\nNo double coupons.
\nNo gas rewards.
\nThey are all about quality, but a box of Cheerios is the same at Marcs, Giant Eagle, Dollar Stores, etc. Aside from the bakery, prepared foods, and meats the rest of what they sell for the most part is just like any other store. But if you did a blind taste test on even those items, could you figure out which store they came from?
\nValet grocery program doesn’t allow carts out of the store. Can slow down leaving store. However, valet service can be a plus.
\nSome great dollar deals every so often.<\/p>\n

\nOFFICEMAX\/OFFICE DEPOT:<\/em> C-<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nMaxperks program offers deals through the year, especially school season.
\nMany Maxperks deals available online – sometimes freebies.

\nAllow multiple limits on Maxperk deals.
\nHave $10 off $50 coupons or the like every so often.
\nStore personel are always asking if I need help.
\nOnline additional discounts given such as $X of $X deals
\nMaxPerks members get 5% back in rewards on their purchases.
\nSome online coupons.
\nAlways have 1 cent Duracell 16 pack Maxperks deals.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nMaxperks deals were mostly just for paper.
\nThe Maxperks value gets adjusted if coupons or additional discounts are used.
\nNo deals over Black Friday like there were in the past.<\/p>\n

\nWAL-MART:<\/em> C-<\/strong>
\nAlthough their score improved, Walmart has consistently placed last among department and discount stores in the American Customer Satisfaction Index. So it’s no wonder customers are upset about shelves not being stocked and not enough cashiers at Wal-mart. <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nCoupons can earn overage (credit).
\nThey price match online (limited).
\nNew Savings Catcher app will find the best price of items.
\nGave workers well-deserved raises.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nNo real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
\nEveryday low prices not as good as it used to be.
\nVery high produce prices.
\nThey don’t double coupons.
\nTheir fuel reward program isn’t very good.
\nNo other reward programs.
\nShelves are usually not fully stocked.
\nNot enough employees at registers, etc.
\nBehemoth stores are way too big – if you forget something you have to take a commuter plane just to get to the other side of the store
\nToo much of what they sell is from China when it used to be mostly U.S. products.
\nThey did away with ad price matching.
\nRarely put ads in newspapers .<\/p>\n

\nWAREHOUSE CLUBS:<\/em> D+<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDecent Quality.
\nLots of freebie food stations.
\nCostco treats their employees right.
\nGood deals on non-grocery items like tires and some on travel and other items.
\nSome offer store coupons (BJ’s does – Costco, Sam’s Club doesn’t).
\nOther programs such as travel deals offers additional savings.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nYou have to pay to shop there.
\nYou have to buy in humongous bulk sizes much of which may get thrown out because it spoils before getting used.
\nMost don’t take coupons (BJ’s does).
\nNo ads in newspapers.<\/p>\n

\nSTAPLES: <\/em>D <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nSchool deals were ok.
\nSome good Staples Rewards (Easy Rebates) deals, mostly for paper…uh, like almost only for paper every week.
\nEasy to fill out the rebates online (Easy Rebates).
\nOnline coupons.
\nCoupons e-mailed every so often are sometimes freebies (get $5 off a purchase of $5 or more)<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nA lot less deals again this past year, especially over Black Friday weekend.
\nSchool deals were minimal as compared to years past.<\/p>\n

\nWALGREENS: <\/em>D <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nTheir Register Rewards offers freebies or decent deals at times.
\nBalance Points Rewards program offers additional savings.
\nEveryday rewards offer additional savings.
\nBonus offers for Everyday rewards for the Balance Points program can be substantial.
\nBeauty Enthusiast rewards offer additional savings.
\nSometimes they offer bonus Everyday rewards when a specific amount is purchased.
\nMonthly in-store Coupon booklet offers additional savings.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nHardly any great deals.
\nVery few Register Rewards deals unless you need Trolli candy.
\nBalance Rewards program stinks – savings usually minimal and you usually have to buy more than one item.
\nCan only use one manufacturer coupon per item (Register Reward is considered a manufacturer coupon).
\nCoupons beep frequently at the register due to issues with their computer system reading coupons.
\nNo Register Reward or additional Balance Reward deals for Thanksgiving week\/Black Friday deals.
\nThey are becoming a store that gives no reason for couponers to shop there.
\nRegister Rewards expire too quick.
\nThe regular price on items are way over-priced.
\nThey don’t put ads in the newspaper every week in some markets.<\/p>\n
