\nCHANGING THE RULES <\/strong>
\nI was at Giant Eagle recently and the cashier said that I could not use more than 21 coupons. I wasn’t aware of the rule, so I obliged and took off enough items to get to 21. The store has a right to limit coupons, but I checked the rules and it turns out it wasn’t in their coupon policy (https:\/\/account.gianteagle.com\/policies<\/a>)! All stores usually post their policy online and it’s a good idea to have a printed copy of them for the stores you shop.<\/p>\n

I get how using tons of coupons can slow down a line and hence the rule for wanting to limit coupons (even though that wasn’t their rule). Usually people behind me get a kick out of seeing how much I saw and verbally tell me. Most of the time the issue is with the computer system accepting a valid coupon. Then a supervisor has to come over and over-ride it.<\/p>\n

The rule the cashier may have been confused by is that in self-scans no more than 20 coupons can be used. The lines with cashiers has no limit…or at least that is the policy online. Each store may have a different rule. That being the case, how is a customer supposed to know? I didn’t see it posted anywhere in the store.<\/p>\n

Giant Eagle limits five like coupons and that is partly to avoid clearing shelves. Again, it makes sense so that you don’t go to the store and find the deal item is already out. The store does give out rain checks though as even with the limits some items still run out.<\/p>\n

Too many rules causes confusion and frustration. It actually slows down the line more since then the customer, if they don’t know the rule, has to amend what they are buying and the cashier has to manually fix issues. <\/p>\n

Sometimes I use what I think is a valid coupon and then find out it isn’t. The writing on the coupons is so small and now some coupons have additional limitations that it adds to the issues. Most of the time I need Mr Magoo readers or a magnifying glass just to see what the coupon says. I don’t have time to be reading the small print. It’s like I need a coupon lawyer to go to the store with me.<\/p>\n

Coupon rules vary by store, manager, and cashier. It can be annoying since the rules can change when the couponer thinks they are following them. Most people just go to the kids because they usually don’t hassle couponers.

\nRecently, one CVS manager read every coupon to make sure she could take more than one of the same, etc. It’s bad enough that the stipulations are cryptic and can be taken in more ways than one. Computer systems know when a coupon isn’t good. If it beeps (which is another story since beeping doesn’t mean a coupon is bad), then check to see if it is legit. There have been plenty of times where I’ve had to correct the cashier when they think the coupon isn’t valid when it is.<\/p>\n

Some stores and manufacturers are adding to the issues. For instance, some coupons say only one coupon per purchase. That can mean one coupon per item to some cashiers or that can mean only one coupon can be used no matter how many of the same item was purchased. I’d rather the manufacturer not even issue the coupon if they put on too many restrictions. It causes the issues that makes stores create rules and slowdowns at the line that get you the laser eyes from the people behind you. The laser eyes are great if you want to burn off some skin tags, but I want my shopping experience along with the cashier and people behind me to be one at Kumbaya. <\/p>\n
