\nI GOT A LEMON! <\/strong>
\nI bought a Subaru Forester last year. I drove it for “free” for a year and two months. I no longer have the Forester. I’ll tell you why.<\/p>\n

Back in June I was driving the Forester and a message light popped up that the passenger airbag wasn’t working. I took it into service and they reset it and said it should be ok now. The message came back on. I took it back in. They replaced the wiring system for it and said it should be ok now. The message came back on. I took it back. They said they forgot to reset the error message and it should be good now after they reset it. The message came back on. I took it back in. By this time I started looking into the Lemon Law for Ohio.<\/p>\n

The Lemon Law states that the issue has to be safety related and an issue that they have been working on, but can’t fix at least three times. Check. The car has to have less than 18,000 miles. Check. It has to be within one year of purchase. Check. They have to have it in service at least 30 days. Now when I took it in the fourth time it was around three weeks that I had it in. I took it in on July 16th and they said they wouldn’t have it fixed until August. Bingo! Now, I wasn’t happy that they would take so long to fix it, but I was happy that it did because I would now qualify for the Lemon Law.<\/p>\n

I opened the case with the BBB as it suggest with the Lemon Law. I could have gotten a lawyer, but I didn’t. Why pay for something that the normal process may work without having to pay extra. As it is, I didn’t pay a penny for anything to have the case opened and for the BBB to work as my advocate on the case.<\/p>\n

So when service called in August they said they were surprised it was ready during the first week of August. They were expecting it to be done by the end of August. That floored me that they couldn’t get the parts or whatever to fix a car. Maybe they had to get it from overseas and manufacture it, but it’s still too long.<\/p>\n

While I had the car in service they gave me loaner cars. A couple times the car they gave me were filthy. This after knowing I was picking up a loaner. One time I got my car back and it smelled like cigarettes. I was pissed. So to get rid of the smell they had to detail the whole inside of the car. Another time I picked up the car the tech left his coffee cup from Starbucks in my console. On the receipt was his name so I asked the guy who Ken was and let him know he left his coffee cup in my car. Needless to say, I wasn’t at all impressed with the service I got from Ganley Wickliffe Subaru.<\/p>\n

So after I picked up my car the fourth time, the error message didn’t come back. The BBB asked me what I wanted to do. I said I wanted the car replaced. They said ok. So I waited for Subaru to accept.<\/p>\n

I asked the BBB if they had many cases with Subarus and she said no. She didn’t even remember one case. So she had no idea how they would respond. She said about 35% of the cars get ok’ed to get a replacement settlement.<\/p>\n

A couple weeks later I get a message that Subaru accepted the settlement. One problem. The amount wasn’t the full amount I paid, so they had to go back to them to get the full amount. They agreed!<\/p>\n

I then had to meet up with the guy to replace the car. One big issue. I needed to get a car! So I had to time it all out. They said it was around three weeks to get me my check once I agreed to the final settlement. Let the jousting with the salespeople begin!<\/p>\n

I don’t even research the invoice price when I go car shopping. I let the salespeople let me know that. They always do. My barometer on whether I get a good deal or not was how the salespeople let me know whether I did or not. Once I get to the point that dealerships start backing out of the deal because they can’t beat the numbers I have then I know I’m down to negotiating a very small amount. There are holdbacks and other incentives that I may not know about so sometimes it’s best to just negotiate the best by pitting dealerships against each other.<\/p>\n

To start I did internet shopping via Edmunds.com. You can have a bunch of dealerships send you pricing without having to step a foot into their showroom. Then I let them know what amount they have to beat. I also planned to get an extended warranty so I had them quote that too.<\/p>\n

Rick Case automatically extends their warranty, so I figured they would have the upper hand on beating everyone on pricing. That’s where pointing that out to other dealerships helps. Turns out it is just for the Powertrain and not all the other components that a full extended warranty would offer. That wasn’t mentioned even though I asked them point blank if it was the same. I was told about this caveat by other dealerships. Once I called them on that and let them know the prices I was getting for the car, they dropped out. They didn’t even give me a price for an extended warranty even after I asked them for it a million times. <\/p>\n

Sunnyside and Classic Honda were in the mix until the end. I told them all that I was getting a car that Saturday and to let me know if there was anything they can do to tilt the deal in their favor. One said that they told me that they would beat my best price by $500. She came back to me and told me that I got a great deal and that they couldn’t beat it by $500…or any amount. The other also couldn’t give me anything to sweeten the pot. One other dealership did.<\/p>\n

I asked the one to give me anything – free oil changes, lower doc fees, etc. The best that they could do was two free oil changes. That’s a decent amount since it’s a synthetic oil that Honda uses, so it’s not the regular oil change price that I can get for less than $20 at Conrads or elsewhere. Synthetic oil changes are usually around $50 to $70. <\/p>\n

Before I pulled the trigger on the deal I made sure nobody would come in last minute to offer me something better that Saturday. One called, but offered no other incentives. Another asked that I let them know I bought the car and from where.<\/p>\n

I also looked at the 2019 Forester because the dealership where I bought the car was offering me a great deal at way below cost, but there was one thing that kept me from getting one. It was a new model year and those tend to have issues. There were a lot of new great features in the car, but there was also a change to the console storage arm rest. It no longer pulled out where I can rest my elbow on it and I always rest my elbow on it. I would be reminded every time I drove and that would drive me nuts. They said they got rid of it because over time it would slide out on its own. Sounded like something that could be fixed. If I’m not comfortable driving it, it will always bug me so I decided not to get it and stuck with getting a Honda CRV. My old Forester at times seemed like it was getting ready to stall and when I was at the dealership a customer had their car in service mentioned that is why they were there to fix their car stalling – wouldn’t be surprised that there would be a recall.<\/p>\n

The CRV, as was the Forester, was highly rated in Consumer Reports and that is what I use to determine the best car to get. Plus it has a great resale value. That alone can save me thousands when I decide to replace the car down the the road.
\n

\nI took the car into Subaru to exchange it. After signing some paperwork he handed me a check for what I paid for the car. In essence, I drove a car for free for a year and two months!<\/p>\n

Later that afternoon I went to Mentor of Honda to get my car. I made sure the numbers jived what he sent me and they did.<\/p>\n

Next it was off to meet with the Finance guy to sign the paperwork. His first comment was that he though the amount I got for the warranty was wrong and he had to check with the manager to see if it was right. It was. He also said I got a great deal on the car. He shook my hand because he was impressed with the deal I got. I paid cost for some car mats and I worked him on getting another accessory that he also admitted he made only $14 on. I negotiated him down to the point he said he just did it for pride.<\/p>\n

Other tips when buying a car:
\n– Buy a car when you don’t “need” one. In other words, if your car is in disrepair and you need to replace it or maybe it isn’t even working, you will be forced to take any deal you can get. The more time you have to shop around, the more likely you will find a great deal.
\n– Don’t believe the dealership when they initially tell you it’s as low as they can go. I heard that a bunch and they kept going lower.
\n– Don’t fall for the – pick out your color sales scheme. It’s just a way to get you in the door and commit to buying from them.
\n– Do as much negotiating online so that you don’t wait at the dealership. They make customers wait if you go to the dealership so that it wears them down and causes some people to figure they might as well buy the car because they committed so much time there at the dealership.
\n– There are great deals on the previous year’s model when the new year model comes out. New models usually start coming out around September, sometimes August.
\n– Check https:\/\/www.carcomplaints.com\/<\/a> to see if there are major issues with the car you plan on buying.
\n
