\nCH-CH-CHANGES <\/strong>
\nThe Cleveland Indians are changing their name. Agree with it or not, they are making the change. I get why, but I also get why people don’t want it changed. It was named after Louis Sockalexis, the first American Indian to play major league baseball. To me and others it was to honor him and growing up with the name I never thought it as a slight to the Indian nation. Kinda like Cowboys and Indians, part of history. How can you get rid of something so nostalgic that has been here for so long. Taking off the blinders, you can start to see why the change is being made.<\/p>\n

For one, the caricature isn’t helpful. It played into stereotypes. Again, it never even crossed my mind until the media brought to attention that some mascots were racist or crossed the line to what should be acceptable. You don’t notice it until you notice it. It’s kind of a gradual acceptance. For instance, would you wear clothes today that you had no problem wearing in the 70’s? Nope. But at that time it was acceptable. It would be so noticeable right now, but back then it was normal and nobody would think anything of it.

\n

\nLocally, there was already a name change for a baseball team. The Indians AA Team in Akron changed their name a few years back. Nobody freaked out about it. In 2014, they went from being named the Aeros to the Rubber Ducks. The city seemed to embrace the new name. Do some call them the Aeros still? Probably. Granted the Akron team hasn’t been around for more than a century like the Indians, so the history isn’t there, but it’s a name change nonetheless.<\/p>\n

Many people will staunchly call them the Indians even after the name change. I too will have a hard time calling them anything different. Part habit, part history, part nobody likes change. Why all the uproar of a name change? Some say ‘cancel culture’, but are we finally fixing wrongs?
\n

\nI see the differences in people as a celebration of uniqueness and cultures that are rich with history. How boring would it be if everyone was the same. It’s why Cleveland has such a great feel. There is always a festival celebrating some nationality. Churches dot the town with many masses spoken in their native tongue. Even MLK Drive with its dozens of International Gardens celebrates the diversity. I also love traveling to other countries and get my fill of their culture.<\/p>\n

We’re a nation trying to make amends with its past. Just recently, it was the 100th anniversary of the Black Wall Street Massacre in Tulsa. It’s not well-known. An event so tragic, how so? Some of this nation’s past is still in its present and that is why there are still issues moving it forward. People are stopping and rethinking what is acceptable. With it means change and change can be hard to accept. It forces us out of our comfort zone. In time, we will look back and realize it was the right thing to do to make these changes.<\/p>\n

We’ve come a long way. Around the time I was born there were still separate drinking fountains for blacks and whites. Blacks weren’t allowed to eat at lunch counters. They had to sit on the back of the bus. Lynchings happened. At some age in my youth when I first learned of all this I was stunned. This history, called Jim Crow laws, wasn’t always taught in school. I read about them or heard about them over time. Even now some schools and states don’t want people to learn or understand the torrid history of our country. It’s no wonder history repeats itself with little understanding, acceptance, or empathy of others.<\/p>\n

There have been positive changes. We are becoming more accepting of differences. During this time, we will debate it and that is healthy too. Change doesn’t happen without questioning the motives and reasoning and answering questions. Acceptance will come in time.
\n

\nFor now, lets try to maybe find a better name for the Indians. Before the Indians name, Cleveland’s baseball team was named the Naps\/Napoleans, Infants, Broncos, Blues, Forest City’s, Lake Shores, Bluebirds, and Spiders. Louis Sockalexis was nicknamed the Deerfoot of the Diamond when he played when they were known as the Cleveland Spiders, so how about naming them the Diamonds or as many are suggesting, the Spiders? Spiders is creepy to some, but I don’t know of another team named the Spiders and I like unique. Better than Deerfoot or even Foot too. Even with all the suggestions, no name seems to stand out.<\/p>\n

They’ve been known as the Indians since 1915. Calling them differently won’t be easy. Just like most people still call Progressive Field the Jake and the Rocket Mortgage Field House, the Q. There won’t be a name that everyone loves and there will be other names that people want more. In the meantime, I have some suggestions for a new name.<\/p>\n
