\nSTOCK MARKET RECORD HIGHS <\/strong>
\nHave you checked your 401k or stocks you owned lately? You might find a pleasant surprise. The S&P 500, Dow, Russell Index, and NASDAQ all hit historic record highs this past week! The Fed declared they still expect to drop interest rates three times this year, calming Wall Street, so stocks took off.<\/p>\n

If your 401k and stocks didn’t perform well, you may need to fix the mix you own. Are you diversified? Are you heavy into one stock? Have you checked to see how well each selection of your portfolio is doing? Most company’s 401k provider have a financial expert offering free analysis and advice on your plan.<\/p>\n

New rules put into place due to the Enron debacle limit how much a 401k plan can have in one stock, typically 10%. That can grow past the 10% if it earns enough. It would just not allow you to get more.<\/p>\n

The Enron scandal ended up creating new rules and the Sarbanes Oxley law. With their accounting fraud Enron flaunted rules, standards and regulations. Their workers lost most all of their retirement as 62% of their 401k was in Enron stock and it went from $90 to nothing when Enron declared bankruptcy. Hence why the 10% rule was instituted. Enron got greedy and put together a charade that over-valued their assets and under-valued their debts while not reporting it all to the government. Eventually they paid the price and the company went bye bye. Sound familiar?<\/p>\n

\n\"Stay<\/a><\/p>\n

\nGO BANKRUPT GET A BONUS<\/strong>
\nIf you helped bankrupt a company you ran, would you expect to get rewarded? It happens more often than you’d expect. Joann Inc (Joann Fabrics), headquartered in Hudson, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy this past week. Their CFO is being paid a $400,000 bonus so that he\u2019ll stay with the company. It requires him to stay for at least six months.<\/p>\n

They haven’t had a CEO since last May and have had to lay off tons of people. Maybe they expect all the top people to abandon ship, but giving out a bonus for them to stay only abets this behavior. There should be laws to stop companies from giving out monetary incentives if they declare bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

In another questionable move, they increased the size of their board of directors from six to seven people. They brought in a turnaround specialist to the board. They should have the rest of the board turn around and leave. <\/p>\n

They have about 800 stores spread across 49 states. They haven’t announced any closures.<\/p>\n

\n
\n\"250x250<\/a><\/p>\n

\nHOME SALES COMMISSION CHANGES <\/strong>
\nHome sales will change now that the standard 6% home purchase commission is no more. Commissions are expected to fall 25% to 50% as flat-fees and discount brokerages are expected to become the norm. The current model has sellers paying both the broker and buyer’s broker.<\/p>\n

The National Association of Realtors in a $418 million settlement with groups of homesellers, agreed to end landmark antitrust lawsuits and eliminate rules on commissions. New rules are also being put in place, including prohibiting agents\u2019 compensation from being included on listings placed on local centralized listing portals, known as Multiple Listing Services (MLS). Another new rule will require buyers\u2019 brokers to enter into written agreements with their buyers.<\/p>\n

The average-priced home sold for $417,000 in the U.S. At that price sellers are paying more than $25,000 in brokerage fees. That fee could fall by between $6,000 and $12,000, according to expert analysis.<\/p>\n

As a comparison, in most other countries the commission to sell a property is 2% to 3%. The average cost percentage of selling a property in the United States is 5.49%.<\/p>\n

\n
\n\"Logo\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\nSELF CHECKOUT OUT <\/strong>
\nI was at Giant Eagle around 8:00 PM and they had all their self checkouts closed. They were roped off. The lines for the cashiers were super long at about ten deep each. Other stores like Target and Wal-Mart also closed down their self scans at specific times and\/or limiting the number of items that can be scanned. There’s a reason behind their madness.<\/p>\n

Turns out the main reason is theft. During the evening hours is when people tend to shoplift more at the self-scans. Closing the self-scans forces people to use a cashier which means they can’t slip in some “freebies”. Apparently, Thou Shalt Not Steal is one of the Ten Commandments these thieves don’t follow.<\/p>\n

Some chains are also limiting the number of items that can be checked out in self-scans. Same reason…the lesser amounts of items going through self scan, the less that can be stolen. Some people might justify stealing because they feel they are “working as a cashier” for the store.<\/p>\n

Shoplifting has become sensationalized with videos of mobs of bandits stealing from stores has many believing crime is on the rise. Data has found otherwise.<\/p>\n

Walgreens, after some highly publicized thefts in San Francisco, cited spikes in shoplifting as an explanation for falling profits and store closures. The claim has since been retracted. Target blamed theft for a rash of store closures. But an analysis found the stores Target closed in Portland and Seattle had less crime than stores that were not closing. Retail shrink has held steady between 1.3 and 1.6 percent of total sales since roughly 2015, so there is no spike in retail theft. <\/p>\n

Another reason for increased theft is the lack of security guards. I used to see security guards at stores more often in the past. Lowe’s used to check receipts. They don’t anymore. Target has cut back on security at the exit door. By saving a buck by not employing security guards are stores to blame for being lax on fighting theft? The median hourly wage of security guards is $16.71 an hour. Statistics show there are more security guards, but less police.<\/p>\n

Another issue is that stores rarely prosecute shoplifters. Remember signs stating shoplifters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. Yep, for the most part, something no longer done. If shoplifters know a store isn’t going to arrest them if they are caught, they will keep coming back to steal more. Instead, stores put more products under lock and key.<\/p>\n

I’ve spoken to many managers and they told me they are told by their company not to get involved when it comes to theft. The store figures the cost to arrest someone and pay lawyers isn’t worth it. So the cycle continues. Stores need to go full bore catching shoplifters and then do a study to see if it cost-effective. The safety of workers is a concern though. People are more apt to use guns now and that could lead to some bad situations, costing the store more than just money. In the end consumers pay for all the theft with higher prices. <\/p>\n
