\nPOSTAGE STAMP PRICE INCREASE <\/strong>
\nA first-class letter will cost you 82 cents instead of 78 cents and on its way to $1 per stamp. Postcards will increase to 65 cents from 61 cents.<\/p>\n

Forever Stamps debuted in 2007 and cost 41 cents. Even with the price increase a Forever Stamp will cover the cost of mailing a letter.<\/p>\n

\nM&M CHANGING COLORS <\/strong>
\nIn an effort to eliminate artificial dyes, brown and blue M&M’s will be eliminated beginning in August, as it marks its 85th anniversary.<\/p>\n

The colors could not be recreated with natural ingredients at a reasonable cost using natural ingredients. Blue, introduced in 1995, can be made with spirulina, an algae-based pigment, but required significantly more material to achieve the same color intensity. Brown had the same type of issue. I’m guessing using mud wasn’t an option.<\/p>\n

Mars, the owner of M&Ms, explored replacing blue and brown with purple and pink or shifting to a three-color mix, but ultimately decided against those options. The colors that will remain are red, yellow, orange, and green.<\/p>\n

There is an ‘M’ stamped on the candies to distinguish it from imitators. It was invented by Forest Mars, son of the Mars founder, and Bruce Murrie, son of the Hershey president at that time and hence the M&M name. It was created in 1940 with the peanut M&M being introduced in 1954. It was popular in rations for soldiers since they ‘didn’t melt in your hand’.<\/p>\n

\nEGGREGIOUS BEHAVIOR <\/strong>
\nThe U.S. Justice Department\u2019s Antitrust Division, together with 17 state attorneys general, including Ohio, have reached a $3.3 million settlement with America\u2019s three major egg producers, Cal-Maine Foods Inc., Hickman\u2019s Egg Ranch Inc. and Centrum Valley\/Versova, for the alleged manipulation of egg prices between June 2022 and March 2025.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit was the result of a 15-month bipartisan multistate investigation that found the egg producers secretly communicated with one another to coordinate their bidding activity and influence the daily egg price quotes published by Urner Barry, a benchmark pricing service widely used in egg supply contracts.<\/p>\n

Under the settlement, all three egg companies agreed to adopt compliance measures to prevent future violations and fully cooperate with oversight by the states. The companies must designate antitrust compliance officers who will monitor for violations of the settlement and report violations to the states and DOJ. Additionally, the egg producers agreed to donate about 53 million eggs combined to food banks or related nonprofits as part of the settlement.<\/p>\n

\nSCHWEBELS SHUT DOWN <\/strong>
\nAfter 120 years in business Schwebel’s Bakery is closing, including it’s Outlet shops. Over 600 employees will lose their jobs, but Orlando Baking has extended offers to many of their workers and are adding a second shift. <\/p>\n

A buyer was interested, but backed out. <\/p>\n

Gone will be familiar brand names, including ‘taliano, Country Hearth, Roman Meal, Cinnabon, Millbrook, and Sun-Maid breads.<\/p>\n

\nHEINENS DOWNTOWN CLOSING<\/strong>
\nThe Heinen’s store located in downtown Cleveland is closing. Another iconic store is going by the wayside. It was one of the most beautiful grocery stores. It was located in the old historic Ameritrust bank building on the corner of East 9th and Euclid Ave.<\/p>\n

Heinen’s lost $18 million over the 11 years downtown, so they pulled the plug. Even though the number of people living downtown has increased exponentially to around 21,000 it wasn’t enough to support the store. Parking was an issue. I’m sure renting the building was much more expensive than a suburban location too. Grocery stores work on small margins and with the exponential increase in costs on everything they couldn’t keep it open. Hopefully, a different grocery store will move in. Aside from Dave’s Supermarkets, there is a dearth of grocery stores in the inner city. Dollar stores aren’t an answer.<\/p>\n

Besides the Cleveland area, Heinen’s has stores in Chicago. <\/p>\n

\nFERRARAS CLOSED <\/strong>
\nFerrara\u2019s located at 5750 Mayfield Road abruptly closed after 67 years in business. It was known for some great Italian food.<\/p>\n

If you still have gift certificates for Ferrara’s, Alesci\u2019s of Shoregate in Willowick will honor them by applying the remaining balance as a 20% discount on purchases until the certificate reaches a zero balance. For example, a customer with a $100 gift certificate would have to spend $500, over one or several trips, to fully redeem its value.<\/p>\n

In some good news a new Italian store will open in Willowick at 30575 Euclid Ave. It’s called Alfredo’s Italian Market. <\/p>\n

\nTIPPING POINT <\/strong>
\nPeople from nations across the world have come to the U.S. for the World Cup. They also brought their culture of tipping…or no to little tipping I should say. Some restaurants in cities where the World Cup is being held are adding a 20% gratuity onto checks because they found patrons from other countries just aren’t tipping.<\/p>\n

I’ve been to nearly 50 countries across the world and I have to be aware of the tipping standards. Tips are considered an insult in some nations. Some nations consider anything over 10% to be excessive. In other countries restaurant staff are paid a fair wage, unlike the U.S. where tipping makes up the difference for a low wage.<\/p>\n

I usually tip 20% or more and before coupons too, so I feel cheap having to not tip much in some countries. But people are ok with whatever standard is considered fair and just.<\/p>\n

In the U.S. tipping has changed too. Recent Toast data show the average restaurant tip in the United States has slipped below the traditional 20% benchmark, with overall tips at 18.8% in the first quarter of 2026 and notable differences by service type and state.<\/p>\n

Tipping increased during the Pandemic because people wanted to support restaurants and their workers during the shutdown.<\/p>\n

The average restaurant tip at Toast restaurants in the United States is 19.3% at full-service restaurants and 15.8% at quick-service restaurants as of the first quarter of 2026, according to the new report.<\/p>\n

The average tip for takeout service at a Toast restaurant in the United States is 13.7% in the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n

States with higher costs of living tend to see lower tip percentages, partly because those states require employers to pay full minimum wage with no tip credit. Delaware tips the most at 22.1% overall while California tips the least at 17.3%, according to the report. <\/p>\n

\nSo have you been at the porcelain toilet with gastro issues recently after eating a smorgasbord at Taco Bell? It could be more than the usual bean overload sending you to the loo. A Cyclospora parasite outbreak in lettuce may be the cause of the issue. Taco Bell pulled their lettuce from their products as a precaution while they investigate. Taylor Farms, the maker of lettuce bags, is at the heart of the investigation. A sample of shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico has tested positive for Cyclospora. They’ve had protests in the past and concerns about poor working conditions, including issues with bathroom breaks.<\/p>\n

Cuts to government funded programs on surveillance of foodborne diseases brings into question the logic of the cuts. Active surveillance requirements for eight pathogens including Cyclospora were reduced. Same goes for screwworm prevention in which funding was severely decreased. Recently, screwworms were detected for the first time in the U.S. after six decades. So if you also find a screwworm in your Big Mac, don’t be surprised. Apparently, it was more important to paint a reflection pool through a excessively-priced no-bid contract rather than fund vital public health initiatives.<\/p>\n
