\nSTORE SAVINGS RATING GRADES<\/strong>
\nSo which stores have the best saving programs this past year? Which have the best deals? What stores offer the best products? How about which ones treat their employees right? I’m passing out grades for the best stores for consumers. The grades are weighted most on which have the best deals. <\/p>\n

This past year most stores stayed the same or moved down a grade. Some moved down. Stores are just not offering as many deals as they used to in the past. Ever since the Extreme Couponing show went on the air the stores have tightened up on their deals and rules.
\n
\nYou may be surprised that I have listed Giant Eagle the best. It’s a store where I can save 70% and more on a consistent basis, mostly due to double coupons. Many folks think their prices are high. Maybe back some years ago they were, but not so much anymore. With Giant Eagle’s other numerous savings programs that other stores don’t have or aren’t as good as, it bubbles them up to the top. And just because a store is known to have low prices in the past doesn’t mean they are still low. Marc’s and Wal-Mart’s prices aren’t as good as they used to be. Because of their everyday low prices, shopping there takes the burden off of having to use coupons and find sales and many people like that simple approach which may not get you the best deals, but deals that are good enough. <\/p>\n

But comparing prices at stores that have everyday low prices (or so they say) to those that also have items that go on sale is not comparing stores apples to apples. As with Giant Eagle figure in whether the item is on sale, gets Fuelperks, gets double coupons, includes eOffers, plus where they have dollars off on your next shopping trips deals, etc. So if you haven’t been to some of these stores that graded well, give them another chance. You may be surprised that they are cheaper or have better savings programs than the stores you go to now. And remember, buy items on sale and match them with coupons to get the best deals.<\/p>\n

Some folks are very loyal to their stores, but if you could get better deals at another store would you go there? We’re creatures of habit and probably shop at the same stores that we’ve shopped at for years and years. I always like to check out stores to see if they’ve gotten better (or worse). I don’t want to miss out on deals! Also, a box of Cheerios is the same at every store, so some items are all the same. <\/p>\n

Back ten years ago the rewards\/rebate programs were much different. There were many more rebate programs with lots of great rebates. Back then you were able to get more razors, shampoo, and hair color for free too. <\/p>\n

I didn’t take into consideration that some of the stores I go to have bat crazy cashiers or are just mean and smelly. Sometimes they can be entertaining. Most cashiers are great. Although now I’m getting tired of Walgreens cashiers telling me the store-dictated “Be Well” when I leave the store. You can duck or use whatever method to try to get them not to say it, but they always slip that statement out when you leave. I wish they would mix it up with a “Peace Out” or with a meaningful hug.<\/p>\n

I could also ding plenty of the stores for having cashiers that don’t know how the registers or programs work. That’s a training issue. It just varies too much across stores depending on their manager. Sometimes I want to have a Sunday gospel chorus behind me sing “Allellulia” when there are no issues with the coupons scanning. <\/p>\n

I do love the cashiers that call for back-up right away when the line is long and they have a large order to get through, especially when coupons are involved. <\/p>\n

Without further adieu here are the grades from best to worst:<\/p>\n

\nGIANT EAGLE:<\/em> B+<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDouble Coupons up to 99 cents all day, every day.
\n10 cent Fuelperks with every $50 purchase.
\n20 cent Fuelperks at times with gift card purchases.
\nFuelperk deals when purchasing certain items.
\n4 cents per $50 spent using Giant Eagle credit card.
\nRegister coupons, some for dollars off your next shopping trip.
\nThey offer tons of eOffers (electronic coupons) that can be stacked with a manufacturer coupon.
\nNew lower prices.
\nBOGO deals, including meat
\nDecent amount of blinkie coupon machines in store.
\nBeer and wine rebates in store.
\nFreebies or close to free items most every week with double coupons
\n$30 worth of Fuel savings with transferred prescription coupons.
\nSome free prescriptions.
\nCan redeem coupons if you forgot to give one to a cashier up to seven days after purchase.
\nCorrect price guarantee – get first item free if item rings up with the wrong price
\nFree babysitting at Eagle’s Nest.
\nNew eAdvantage program – sometimes Free items offered.
\nIf you forget to use a coupon they will take it up to 10 days after the date on the receipt with a loyalty card.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nHigh produce prices. Very few go on sale.
\nSome prices on items still high. Hard for them to get away from the image that their everyday prices were high, but not so much anymore.
\nEliminated price-matching.<\/p>\n

\nALDIS:<\/em> B-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nAwesome produce sales
\nNew organic foods
\nSuper fast cashiers – do they give them free Red Bull?
\nDecent dairy deals
\nGreat guarantee program
\nStores are sized for easy in and out.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nStores look low end.
\nHave to pay for bags.
\nThey don’t take coupons.
\nLimited payment options
\nLimited variety of stock
\nHave to pay for cart.
\nMostly store brand.<\/p>\n

\nRITE AID (UP Rewards):<\/em> B –<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nLotsa great UP rewards deals.
\nI like that you can get more than one offer on most of the deals.
\nEnough deals to keep you coming back each week on a good variety of items.
\nVideo Values coupons add to savings (can stack with manufacturer coupon).
\nThey changed the Video Values coupons so that you didn’t have to type in a captcha code.
\nElectronic coupons can be loaded to your card from their site.
\nSome gift card deals with their UP rewards.
\nAdditional discounts with each reward level reached
\nNew Your Year program offers freebies for reaching spending amounts.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nWhen they moved the UP rewards to load onto your card automatically they didn’t print on the receipt the amount of rewards you had on the card.
\nRewards expire way too quick.
\nNot a ton of freebies each week.
\nWould like to see Video Value coupons loaded to card and not have to watch the video to get them.
\nThe regular price on some items are over-priced.
\nNo more Rebate program.
\nRestrictive coupon rules.<\/p>\n

\nBUEHLERS:<\/em> C+<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDouble Coupons up to 99 cents all day, every day.
\nGood quality, similar to Heinens.
\nRewards program offering points for purchases that can get redeemed for rewards.
\nFuel rewards with Speedway where available.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nEveryday prices are high.<\/p>\n

\nDAVES SUPERMARKET:<\/em> C<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDouble Coupons up to 99 cents all day, every day.
\nStores are sized for easy in and out.
\nBuy $100 in gift cards, get $10 Dave’s gift card.
\nLocally owned.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nEveryday prices can be high.
\nMinimal savings rewards programs.
\nNo Rewards program.<\/p>\n

\nMARCS:<\/em> C<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nOk everyday low prices (used to be better).
\nOk produce prices (used to be better).
\nGift card deals like the 10 cents off a gallon of Speedway gas.
\nGood closeout deals.
\nLocally owned.
\nDiscounted newspapers.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nNo super deals like you can get at Giant Eagle on a consistent basis.
\nNo real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
\nLimited payment options – no credit cards except for Discover.
\nNo Rewards program.<\/p>\n

\nCVS (Extrabucks):<\/em> C<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nIf it wasn’t for the ton of Extrabucks freebies over the week of Black Friday, the grade would be lower.
\nUsually something can be had for savings of 70% off or more every week.
\nExtra coupons given at the coupon kiosk.
\nPrescription Extrabuck rewards.
\n$X of $X spent coupons given at times.
\nEarn 2% in Extrabucks rewards on most purchases (given after each quarter).<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nNot as many Extrabucks freebies as in years past.
\nNot as many $4 off $20 purchase kind of coupons as in years past.
\nNot as many additional coupons printing on receipt or coupon kiosk
\nRewards don’t expire as quick as UP rewards and Register rewards, but still too quick.
\nStock has been running low on some items.
\nThe regular price on some items are over-priced.
\nBeauty Product Rewards at times.<\/p>\n

\nDOLLAR STORES:<\/em> C<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nMost all now take coupons.
\nClearance items can be very low priced.
\nThey have $5 off $25 (or other amounts) coupons at times.
\nSome offer rewards savings.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nItems can be cheap, but also cheaply made.
\nLimited selection.<\/p>\n

\nHEINENS:<\/em> C-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDecent dollar sales
\nNew loyalty program.
\nIf you want to feel elite, this is the store.
\nNew downtown store!
\nLocally owned.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nEveryday prices are high.
\nLimited deals.
\nNo gas rewards.
\nThey are all about quality, but a box of Cheerios is the same at Marcs, Giant Eagle, Dollar Stores, etc. Aside from the bakery, prepared foods, and meats the rest of what they sell for the most part is just like any other store. But if you did a blind taste test on even those items, could you figure out which store they came from?<\/p>\n

\nWALGREENS (Register Rewards\/Balance Rewards): <\/em>C- <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nLots of Register Reward deals on Thanksgiving\/Black Friday. If it wasn’t for the ton of Register Reward deals over that week, the grade would be lower.
\nThey have a Balance Rewards program that offers some savings.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nVery few Register Rewards deals, especially for items of no use (no, I don’t need any more menopause medication).
\nNew Balance Rewards program stinks – savings usually minimal and you usually have to buy more than one item.
\nCan only use one manufacturer coupon per item (Register Reward is considered a manufacturer coupon).
\nAlways run out of the freebie Register Rewards items early and even though they say the item will be stocked when the truck comes in later in the week it rarely happens.
\nTheir new scanners have a hard time reading the Register Reward coupons and other coupons.
\nRegister Rewards expire too quick.
\nThe regular price on some items are over-priced.<\/p>\n

\nSEARS\/KMART (Shop Your Way Rewards):<\/em> D+<\/strong>
\nPeople are still not attracted to shopping at Sears or K-Mart as their same store sales from last year dropped significantly from the prior year. About 70% of their sales are from Shop Your Way Reward Members. They need some loss leaders to get people in the store.<\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nIt’s nice that they have some type of rewards program that earns credits for money spent there.
\nAt KMart they offer $1 or $2 doubles at times (but there is a limit of 5 and with a $25 purchase).
\nThey have a decent amount of $10 off $50 coupons or the like for certain category items (lawn, clothing, etc.) that can be loaded onto your card online.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nYou only get 5 doubles.
\nNot as many stores means you have to spend more on gas to get to their stores.
\nThey don’t send an ad to my house anymore because…they closed one close to me.
\nStock can be lacking.
\nRewards have to be loaded all the time and many of them are for high amount purchases such as a $50 purchase or more.<\/p>\n

WAREHOUSE CLUBS:<\/em> D+<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nDecent Quality.
\nLots of freebie food stations.
\nCostco treats their employees right.
\nGood deals on non-grocery items like tires and some on travel and other items.
\nSome offer store coupons.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nYou have to pay to shop there.
\nYou have to buy in humongous bulk sizes. Many of which may get thrown out because it spoils before getting used.
\nMost don’t take coupons, although BJs does.<\/p>\n

\nOFFICEMAX (Maxperks):<\/em> D<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nSome great freebie Maxperks deals throughout the year, especially office supplies and school items.
\nAllowed multiple limits on Maxperk deals.
\nSent $10 off $40 coupons or the like every so often.
\nStore personel are always asking if I need help.
\nOnline additional discounts given such as $X of $X deals
\nMaxPerks members get 5% back in rewards on their purchases.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nVery few Maxperks deals.
\nThe coupons they sent or codes now are adjusting the Maxperks value.
\nNot always enough of the Maxperk items in stock.<\/p>\n

\nSTAPLES (Easy Rebates): <\/em>D <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nSchool deals were great.
\nSome good Staples Rewards deals.
\nEasy to fill out the rebates online.
\nAlways freebie photo paper and low-priced paper.
\nOnline coupons.<\/p>\n

Cons: <\/strong>
\nA lot less deals this year, especially over Black Friday <\/p>\n

\nWAL-MART:<\/em> D<\/strong>
\nWalmart placed last among department and discount stores in the American Customer Satisfaction Index in 2014, the seventh year in a row they have taken last place or tied for last. So it’s no wonder customers are upset about shelves not being stocked and not enough cashiers at Wal-mart. Too many of their workers get such low pay that they qualify for government assistance which taxpayers have to subsidize even though Walmart makes billions in profits.<\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong>
\nSupposed everyday low prices although they aren’t as low as they used to be.
\nCoupon can earn overage (credit).
\nThey price match.
\nNew Savings Catcher app will find the best prices of items.
\nCons: <\/strong>
\nNo real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
\nVery high produce prices.
\nThey don’t double coupons.
\nTheir fuel program isn’t very good.
\nNo reward programs.
\nShelves are usually not fully stocked.
\nNot enough employees at registers, etc.
