My wife accepted a new job (thanks to those that offered well-wishes and all), so after we found out she didn’t need to start the first week in January we decided to do a vacation before she started. We started looking on Christmas day. We were overdue for a vacation on a beach. Most of our vacations as of late were to great locations, but no beaches and if there were beaches there we were sharing it with shivering seagulls.

I checked out some cruises on http://www.vacationstogo.com. They have some great last minute cruise deals. There were some out of Miami that looked good. They cost around $449 for a seven night cruise through the Caribbean. I figured we would stay in Miami some too.

Another option was to go to Maui. We stopped there on a cruise some years ago. The Hawaiian cruise we took was through vacationstogo.com and we paid $1,000 for a seven-nighter with a balcony. That was around 4 years ago. The prices were much higher now.

There were some fleeting thoughts to go to other warm locales, but we were being drawn to Maui. I needed a relaxing trip. Most of the trips we took we do a ton of stuff but that also means not relaxing in one spot for the trip. But because we did Hawaii on a cruise before we knew which islands were the best and Maui has it all, but we didn’t get to spend enough time there last time.

I had a $600 voucher yet to use through Delta that we got for taking a later flight because they were oversold when we went to Portland this past July. We had to use it by July this year. Starting a new job, there is that unwritten rule not to take a lengthy vacation during the first handful of months on the job. So we figured we should use it now, but the cost for a flight to Miami last minute was around $400. To Maui it was around $1,100.

I trolled around for deals in the morning and then checked them again in the afternoon. By that time the price jumped around $200. Snap. I didn’t actually snap my fingers or say snap, it was a thought that I had.

I figured I would check for deals on Sunday hoping that the prices went back down. I got up early on Sunday and sure enough the prices dropped back down. There weren’t many seats left so we quick booked a flight to Maui. I booked us to leave that Thursday. I even checked on Tuesday to see how much a flight would cost and it jumped to $2,000. I don’t advise last minute travel because the deals usually stink. It’s best to book your stay many months in advance. Sign up to http://www.farecompare.com and it will e-mail you when the price of a flight you want to take drops in price. It will also show you the current costs on a calendar.

A good deal for a flight to Maui normally costs around $400 to $500 if you’re lucky enough to get one at that price. People that live on the west coast of the U.S. can find flights for around that price or a little less than that at times. From Ohio you can find prices at around $800 if you book early.

Knowing we may still go to Maui we booked a hotel through http://www.hotels.com. They have some good specials and after ten total stays you get a free night somewhere. The site gets pricing at all the hotels in the area that are available and lets you know the best deals. I also checked http://www.priceline.com. Sometimes the sites have a block of rooms that they get at a good price that will show up on their site and not others. Most of the hotels were sold out so our pickins were slim. But that didn’t stop me from finding some super deals.

I initially booked a room for $130 for a room and breakfast at Maui Beach hotel via Hotels.com about five miles from the airport since it was a good deal and decent enough from what I could read in http://www.Tripadvisor.com. But I still planning to check for other deals. Better to get something in the books and then dig around for better deals on last minute vacations.

I came across a condo for $130 called the Maui Vista. I never stayed in a condo before but it had great write-ups on Tripadvisor. I called and thought to stay there the whole time. I left a message for them to call me.

I then check for rental car deals. I couldn’t believe the prices I found – almost $600! I found it on Kayak.com. So I tinkered around some. I saw that the price dropped in half if I dropped two days of the rental (really it was about a day and a half). So $300 for less than two days! I then booked it on http://www.Budget.com since I found a better deal there. And even better I pre-paid and got 7 days for $200! It’s usually better to book for a week and return the car early if they don’t charge you to do so. I tried using Entertainment coupons but the deal wouldn’t allow it.

So we stuck with the hotel near the airport that had a shuttle that took us to the car rental place. We could’ve taken a bus for $1 or free if we wanted to get around town, but there was enough to do nearby.

Delta charged for food on the flight. Not that cheap. You’re better off doing fast food or finding something at the shops at the airport. They also charged $25 for our second bag (carry-on was the first). Look for discounts online on an airline’s site to pre-pay for checked luggage. Southwest still doesn’t charge for extra baggage unless you’re over the weight and size limit. We bought one of those luggage weighers. Those things are very handy. When we checked our bags at the airport we were able to finagle them at exactly 50 pounds each which is the max weight limit before they start charging.

I’m just waiting for the airlines to start charging for everything from getting in line early when they don’t call your seating zone. Or perhaps for not pushing your seat back up when they make the announcement or holding up the line of people boarding by dilly-dallying getting seated or putting your luggage away.

I noticed that some of the flights were most likely booked solid since I couldn’t even get all my seats assigned. Sure enough we found out that our flight out of Atlanta to LA was booked solid with over 100 people on stand-by. I checked ahead of time to see if there were any flights to Maui that we could take if we took a later flight should they ask for volunteers and offer a voucher. They did offer one for $400. Not enough. But more importantly, they didn’t have any other flights open to Maui for the next day or two. No thanks.

Taking a later flight in order to get a voucher is good for non-stop flights or even one-stop flights, but we had two stops. It’s a long enough day flying to Hawaii even with one stop.

Other flights we took were booked solid, but they didn’t ask for volunteers. Part of the reason was that the other folks were flying stand-by. No reason to bump people if they don’t have paid seats. There were so many standbys because people were still getting flights that were cancelled from all the bad weather and snow in Atlanta – 4 days prior!

One family got shafted though. The one flight had 5 seats open up. They quickly filled them up although some people either didn’t hear their name or act quickly enough to say yes to one of the seats. The reason the 5 seats opened up was because the family of 5 that had paid seats already didn’t show up at boarding time, but after everyone had already boarded. Their flight must have been late but they were there before the plane closed the cockpit door. They were furious. I’d be too if I was there before the door closed, especially with young kids. They had to rebook from there.

It always pays to get there early and to make sure your flights have enough time in-between in case a flight is late. I saw some flights with 50 minutes between us having to board and I decided to take different flights that had more time in-between.

There better be a good toy in the box for over $8 for cereal!

I was shocked to see how much some grocery items cost in Maui. Prices for some regular-sized boxes of cereal were over $8! Bread was over $5 a loaf! Eggs cost over $3 for a dozen! It made me sweaty.

The craziest was the price of fruit. I figured prices would be lower for pineapple and other fruits since they are grown on the island. Nope. When I first saw a price for pineapple it said $1.19. I thought that was a great price for pineapple. Upon closer inspection I saw that it was $1.19 per pound! I can find a whole pineapple for $1.49 at Aldi’s.

Not much better were bananas at around $1.09 a pound. I can get them for 39 cents a pound. At these prices I think if people want to get fruit they are better off getting a pack of Juicy Fruit gum.

We had papaya every day. We found some deals on it at $1.19 for a papaya at Longs Drugs. Some supermarkets priced them at $2.59 a pound!

We bought a 12 pack of pop on sale for $4 (yes, that was the sale price). We took it to the beach or on our road trips or for lunch at the condo. Good thing because a pop (or soda for some of ye) cost around $2.50 most everywhere.

Restaurants were priced ok. With the short amount of time we had to get the trip arranged I didn’t have as much time to look for restaurant coupons. I printed a handful of deals for restaurants and other activities I found at: http://www.alohadestinationactivities.com, http://www.mauileisureguide.com, http://www.ecouponshawaii.com, http://www.hawaiivacationcoupons.com/and http://www.boh.com.

To find deals and coupons for any city you’re travelling to just type in the city name or state name and the word coupon or deals in the search field and you should find sites with coupons for that city.

I figured I would get an Entertainment book when we got there to get some deals. I couldn’t find any there, but it turns out we didn’t have to since I found a ton of deals in all the tourist booklets that they have everywhere. I recommend getting Entertainment books though since they also have a lot of BOGO activity and restaurant coupons. Get them for 35% off and extras for $15 at Entertainment Book Deals.

We found a handful of buy one get one half off deals. Cool Cats had the best burgers that we used with that coupon. But the best we came across were the half off deals. One of the best sushi restaurants called Sansei had a half off almost everything in their menu deal from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. They told us to get in line by 4:30. They said people line up outside the restaurant as early as 3:30 and sit in their lawn chairs. Sure enough, we got there right about 4:30 and there were a line of people down the sidewalk with many people in their lawn chairs.

And the sushi there was great. We ate a lot of Ahi tuna sushi and tried all the popular items. We ordered so much I think I ate an aquarium full of fish.

Another restaurant called Basil Tomatoes also had a half off deal from 5 to 6. There was no line there, but the food was awesome there too. I had a calamari steak that was so tender that I cut it with a fork.

One restaurant called 3 Olives also had a half off sushi menu. We got enticed there by some free sushi they were offering at the front door. The food there was also awesome. Plus they had a 20% off a bottle of wine deal. The waitress was one of the best we ever had too.

We tried to hit all of the restaurants that were the ‘best’ of Maui. And we hit many of them. I don’t want to go to a restaurant just because it has a coupon. I want it to be a good one too. Luckily, almost all of which we found coupons or deals.

Yes, this is a real sign we found for a store in Maui. I don’t think it smelled all that great in the store.

Wine was pricey everywhere – usually starting at around $30, but I found one place called the Pineapple Grill that had half off bottles on Wednesdays. Some places allowed you to bring in your own bottle or beer with no added charge. We bought some bottles at the supermarket – many at half off and took them back to the room along with some cheese and crackers and stuff. And would you believe I found some good winetags that I used! I used a couple $2 off cheese and $1 off crackers winetags I found. I was so happy I could’ve skipped wildly.

For breakfast we bought enough to last us for the week instead of going out for breakfast. I worked out great since it allowed us more time at the beach instead of being at a restaurant. I found a good deal on a tray of 50 medium eggs for $4.49. I got some Buddig ham for $1.34 after a .55 coupon I found on one of the packages. When I went out to get the Sunday paper I got some day old wheat bread for $1.99 marked down from $4.99. Coffee was relatively cheap as we got a bag for $3.99 of Maui coffee that lasted all week. The first place we stayed at included breakfast for two for an additional $10. We ate a ton there. Most places served sticky white rice for breakfast. I love that crap. You can probably use the stuff in place of plaster to patch holes in walls, but I just love the taste and texture of it.

For lunch we didn’t want to waste good beach tome so we ate quick. We did Taco Bell a couple time using BOGO coupons for Burrito Supremes I found in one of the tourist travel booklets and BOGO taco coupons I printed online. A good move since we needed something to irrigate the pipes since we both had travel-spooked intestines.

We had leftovers on one day and did some value menus. Value menus have the best deals. Some fast food restaurant owners don’t like value menus since on some items they don’t even make a profit. Some places had better value menus than others. One had a McDouble cheeseburger for $1. Just think it costs $1 more when you get cheese on your Quarter Pounder. One McDonalds had a coconut pie! I was jazzed.

We did run into an issue trying to use a $3.99 combo meal coupon I printed off of Quizno’s site. The two stores we tried to use them at didn’t accept them. I’m not totally surprised. Same went for some airport restaurants that didn’t accept coupons we had. They are a different animal so I didn’t fuss about it.

When we got there we stopped at a Wal-Mart to get some stuff. I figured they would have the best deals on souvenirs. Not so. They had a beach towel for $12.08 there that I found everywhere for $9.99. It honked me off enough that we called them to price match it. The guy said to come in and they would take care of it. But they gal at customer service called the one store we went to and they said they didn’t have the same towel. They did since I we were back there and found it. But the gal was unrelenting and I was pissed and didn’t want to waste time hashing it out so I just returned them. I then called the store manager to give her a piece of my mind. I’m not keen on Wal-mart with their employment practices and all as it is but I’ll use them in a pinch to get a good everyday deal instead of searching everywhere for one. I ended up returning a t-shirt I got there for $10 too figuring it was a good deal. Instead I found a similar shirt that I got at Lahaina Discount Store in Lahaina where I got a bunch of shirts that cost me 7 for $20.

We did a good many excursions. I’m a snorkel freak. I was snorkeling in the water so long my fingers pruned up. I came across turtles and tons of wacky looking fish. I almost stepped on a moray eel or two and took a pic of one with an underwater camera that was large and snapping it’s mouth at me. Those things looked like they had gummy teeth but I didn’t want to chance getting bit by it.

I sure hope my toes don’t look tasty…

I saw snorkel rentals for $1.50 a day, but we brought our own. I don’t think I want to put my mouth on a snorkel that was used by hundreds of other people anyway. Mmm, oh this person must have smoked Camels.

What me worry?

Many places had signs for jellyfish and Man-o-wars which are huge jellyfish. Many beaches posted warning about currents. I almost got smashed into some rocks and coral with some waves. But my biggest adventure was to swim out far enough to take pics of whales. Yes, whales. We went on a boat excursion and I saw that the humpback whales there swam not too far from shore. So I swam out so far I could barely see the shore. I came across some huge turtles but no whales. I even tried to call for them using the chirps I thought would mean something to them and they would come pronto and investigate what I was saying. It was a little freaky being out that far since they do have sharks that attack people every so often. What can I say, I like an adventure.

I did find some loot while snorkeling – A swimming fin, a Thomas the train toy, and a shovel. Luckily, no used bandaids. A few more days and I think I could’ve opened a store there.

Snorkeling for whales…

I wanted to jet ski, but because the whales were around for their breeding season they don’t allow jet-skiing. They are also banning plastic bags at stores for the same reason. They don’t want the bags negatively effecting sea-life. No cell phone use while driving on the island too.

The boat we took on the whale excursion was a deal. It was $30 for two people for two hours. We saw tons of whales. Many had babies with them. Not the people, but the whales. They were all humpback whales. We parlayed that into a sunset cruise as the sun set as the boat came back into port.

Whales like to get petted because their barnacles make them itch.

We did the Road to Hana. After 617 sharp turns I think they should rename it the Road to Finding Out What You Ate The Day Before. It was ok, but that was the last time this cat does that road again. There was a nice black sand beach at one of the stops. Some waterfalls too.

I also finally surfed. On a prior trip to Hawaii I couldn’t even get on the board. This time I got on the board and sailed into shore. I did some paddle boarding (standing on a surfboard while paddling with a paddle). Not easy since we went on a windy day. But that is how I got a deal on it. It was $35 for two hours. I played it up as to how bad the weather was and asked for a better deal. She gave it to us for $20 for two hours! Remember when you want a good deal ask for it in a way that gives them an open to give you a deal and then shut up and let them come up with it.

The condo we stayed at was perfect. Great location in Kihei since it was central and by everything. At $120 a night you can’t go wrong. No maid service, but that was ok. We weren’t there to stay in the room. If you do go on vacation and are one of those that spend most of the time in the room, you will save tons by just staying at the local Days Inn and pretending it’s super warm and sunny outside.

Gas was pricey. The cheapest I saw was $3.91 a gallon. Better off riding a bike as the island is not that big. One of the excursions that we thought of doing was a bike ride down Mount Haleakala cost around $130 or so. A bike at Wal-Mart costs only $75 so a bit overkill on the price. We did ride up the mountain in our car and the ride down would’ve been dangerous as there is not much room between the bikes and cars on the road.

We rented a Kayak. I went snorkeling off of it some ways out. Again looking for some friendly whales to pet.

I did find a Walgreens and I was able to get the free after register rewards deals. The one item that was supposed to print the register reward but didn’t. It was similar looking to the Omega 3 in the ad and it rang up the same price as the manager assured me it would print out the reward. But instead they gave me a gift card for $10.

I came across a coupon in one of the travel mags for a one-hour massage for $25 at a local school of massage. They were booked, so a no go for me there. After all that swimming I needed to pop out a few knots. Perhaps rubbing my back on the barnacles of the whale’s body would help.

The weather was great. Almost every day was sunny. Before we left for the trip it showed rain every day. I see their forecasters are no Dick Goddards.

We figured we would spend New Years at a local establishment. They made it up like it was a big to do. It ended up being dead in the place although there was this guy that was playing pool that looked like he took out his dentures and had that all gums look and he would stick out his tongue real far when he took a shot. He provided much amusement. I faked taking a picture of my wife to take a picture of him, but he was too far away and it was too dark in the place to get a good shot. After they wanted to charge us to stay – they were supposed to charge $20 at the door but we got in before they did, we decided to leave after we finished our bottle of wine. We got to the room and I made it to 11:35 PM – that would be 4:35 AM on EST. I conked out. A quick hoorah and I was out cold. Speaking of cold, it’s very hard to go from white sand back to white snow.

Joe
http://www.joethecouponguy.com

CVS Buy $25 get $10 Extrabucks: Scott paper towels 10 pack or 24 pack toilet paper – $10 plus use $2 on each – remember to click the back space key 3 times to print the coupon twice (fill in deal with $5 in Kleenex/Cottonelle wipes): http://www.scottbrand.com/community/savings/scott/coupon_display?coupon=coupon.100110.extrasoft.html Kelloggs http://bricks.coupons.com/Start.asp?bt=wi&tqnm=yaemcru6201985&o=81160&c=SK&p=tMHjYwsz Buy $20 get $10 in Extrabucks: […]

[1

post-3222","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
