Ohio was ranked 8th. Sure, there are times when I spread out like Jabba the Hut across my couch and eat junk all day. Sometimes I’m so lazy to even pick up the food. I try to reach it with the least amount of effort by jabbing my sticky tongue at nearby chips or cookies like a chameleon launching it’s tongue to capture it’s meal. One time I got a mouthful of beverage coasters with one errant flick. I think I tasted some leftover coffee on it.

And my choice of food isn’t always the best. When you shop like I do and have 15 variations of each snack food available to mankind it can be tempting to eat poorly because of all the tasty treats that are all around.

Couponers tend to buy what is on sale and that usually means buying a lot of processed foods, but I always temper it with making sure we do eat healthy. I try to counter it by buying tons of fruits and vegetables. We have a Noah’s Ark of food at our house. There always seems to be two of everything. Usually one is fresh while the other is getting ready to rot. Two bags of carrots (I’m not sure if one is male while the other is female), two bags of oranges, two sprigs of green onions, two beets, and so on.

Sometimes I buy stuff that is healthy not knowing if I will even eat it. For instance, if I buy beets they may just be for show since I may not whip up a hearty batch of borscht with them.

The best deals I find for produce are at Aldi’s, Sav-a-Lot, and Marcs. Valu King is ok, but I have noticed that the produce deals there and even Marc’s aren’t as good as they used to be. Here’s a rule of thumb about finding the best produce deals. If the produce section is in the back of the store, the store will have good deals on produce. If the produce section is in front of the store as you walk in, the deals aren’t so great. Why do stores do that? They know that people don’t want to spend the time running around for deals, so they know people will commit to buying the produce at their store if it is the first section that the see. If it was expensive and in the back of the store then people won’t buy as much and might even decide to go elsewhere for the produce deals. All the big grocery stores like Heinen’s, Giant Eagle, Buehler’s have their produce sections as you walk into the store.

If you look at their ads they have the least amount of produce items on sale, usually only two or three. Even their BOGO deals on produce aren’t so hot since they price them so high initially. For instance, the other week I got blueberries at Aldis for $1.69 while at Giant Eagle they were BOGO which made them $1.99 each – at BOGO prices! Still much cheaper at Aldis.

The quality is good for the cheaper produce too. At times I think Aldis does freeze theirs so sometimes you might get a bad batch if they keep it too cold for too long. But it’s usually great quality with name brands like Dole and Driscoll. And the family that owns Aldi’s also owns Trader Joe’s!

Convenience is worth something. But most stores with low priced produce like Aldis’ Marcs, and Sav-a-Lot are a stones throw away from the grocery stores. To me it’s worth saving $20 for the extra 15 minutes to go there. In essence, that equates to making $80 an hour on your job!

Speaking of Sav-a-Lot, there are four $5 off a $20 purchase coupons in the Our Town and All Around Book. If you are interested in purchasing one they are $28 with free shipping at
Limited supply left. There are tons of other coupons in it – around 1,000. You can get it at http://www.joethecouponguy.com/merchandise/index.htm.

What I found interesting in the article is that Ohio has one of the worst ratios of grocery stores to people. It was ranked 45th with .18 grocery stores per 1,000 people. Less competition means higher pricing.

Here’s the story about the states with the worst eating habits.
http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/112083/10-states-with-the-deadliest-eating-habits

GAS PRICES
Look for gas prices to lower with the crisis in Egypt settling down.
