There were a few things that had me concerned about being on the show. One being that I didn’t want them showing my stock without showing that I donate it to charities. They couldn’t agree to it. So I told them no to being on the show. I didn’t want to look like a hoarder and it wouldn’t be fair if they showed my stock without letting the viewers know that it gets donated. A very minor demand, but that shows if they can’t agree to that then there will be a good chance they will do their best to make the segment good for TV, but possibly not for me. My integrity is worth more than being on national TV.

I’m sure there will be plenty of people that will want to do the show just to get on TV. However, the pilot show didn’t really show couponers in the best light. They want ratings and they will do what they want to get them. I can’t really blame them, but that is a huge risk for the reputation for anyone that goes on that show. They also didn’t want to film me teaching one of my classes. I even went as far as to tell them that after all, they are THE LEARNING CHANNEL and not VH1. Although sadly, I do enjoy all the freaks they have on all the reality shows on VH1. TLC even had a show about odd habits with one that showed a lady that eats toilet paper. Umm, yeah, I think that was a good decision.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK
Get the Entertainment book for 50% off! As dumb as that sounds there are people that fall for scams all the time because they don’t do the research or because they fall for hard sells. Sometimes as much as people’s Spidey senses tingle they fall for these schemes. There’s one scam that plays on your ego. Did you ever get one of those e-mails telling you’ve been selected to a Who’s Who directory? I get them every so often. Are they legit? Some are. Many aren’t. I did some digging around and found plenty of fodder about them.

The one that contacted me recently wanted to charge around $1,000 for a lifetime membership. You usually get a plaque or book and your name listed in their ‘exclusive’ directory. I’d say a phone book is not much different. LinkedIn is much better at networking too and they don’t charge you. But how do you resist having a leather bound book that has your name listed in it that you can put in your den library? I’d be sure to whip it out every chance I get. When people visit I would press the book up against their noggin so that they could just see how special I was. Well, maybe that might be a bit too pretentious.

People look for affirmation that they’ve worked hard and have done great things. So getting listed in a Who’s Who book feels good. But if you really want to feel special I can put you on my own exclusive ‘Iron Ore Pyrite’ list (it’s much more special than platinum and gold) for a small fee of $12.95. I will post a message in my blog telling everyone how special you are (you will have to tell me first why you are special though). And if you are really special I will put you in my Special People Hall of Fame. That will cost you $999 for a lifetime membership. I can sell you a cheaper “temporary” Hall of Fame membership for $99 that lasts only one year. But since you know you are special for more than just one year and deserve the lifetime membership I think the $999 is well worth it. You don’t want your ‘specialness’ to be temporary after all.

A lot of these places stroke your ego by asking about you and your accomplishments to get you going. They let you blather on and on about your accomplishments. Who wouldn’t like to do that? In this world of not getting appreciated for all you do it is welcoming to get some notoriety. After all, not many people ask you about what you’ve done in your life and even when they do they really are only half-listening. I have a hunch they paint their nails or do a Sodoku puzzle while you talk nonstop about your supposed accomplishments.

Most of them put on a hard sell. Some people take the bait when they offer the lower priced options like the $199 special. For me that’s a couple month’s worth of groceries. Here’s the kicker – it’s usually non-refundable. Red flag alert!

They also don’t like it when you tell them you need to check things first. They know once you are off the phone you will most likely not call back. Part of the reason is they know that if you do your due diligence you will most likely find out about the scam or it will put enough doubt in your mind about it. Anyone that sells you that hard is usually not looking out for your best interests. And why wouldn’t a legit company not want you to check them out?

Here’s a few things I like to do just to confirm my suspicions about whether the company is a scam. The first thing I do is I e-mail them back and ask them what I’ve done that is so special. I always get no response. Does that mean they don’t realize all my accomplishments like the one time I rolled all sixes in Yahtzee. What it really tells me is that they ask anyone with a job to be on the list. What’s their criteria after all? If they asked me to spell pudding to test me on my specialness I might feel more comfortable.

They really want to get your credit card info. Once they get that then they can charge you. You could dispute the charges via your credit card, but that is a pain too. Some may even sell your credit card info. They guise it with telling you it is information needed for the book and then pilfer your credit card. Most of these companies have been in business for a very short time meaning they haven’t faced much scrutiny….yet.

But what are you really getting? The legit ones may help you network some, but I can do that on Linkedin and other better options. Does it let me strut into a job interview and slap my Who’s Who plaque on the interviewers desk while I watch them quiver with delight? Or will it network me with a boatload of other gullible people? To me I’d expect a Who’s Who directory to only include the cream of the crop of each profession, but I found lots of people that said they were contacted by them that didn’t have any accomplishments worthy of being in a Who’s Who directory.

There are some tricks to find out if they are legit. A search of the company found that the company was rated an A in BBB. So they have to be good? Checking their complaints, almost 200 of them, most of them state that the customer failed to acknowledge acceptance to the BBB, meaning the customer wasn’t satisfied with the resolution. BBB was shown to favor people who paid for their membership so you have to do some more digging as they can’t be fully trusted anymore – someone even tested BBB by creating a company called Hamas and they were given an A rating even though they weren’t legit. I checked a couple other sources. Using http://www.800notes.com I used their phone number to see if they had any complaints off their phone number. There were plenty.

Then I typed the name of the company and the word scam in a Yahoo search. Tons more issues came up. I noticed that some of these scam businesses will even have a site with the company name and the word scam in it – something like abccompany-is-a-scam.com. They know a lot of people will try to search the company that way so then they use the web-site to instead direct them to a site that says they are legit, fooling even more people. The word scam even comes up in the auto-pre-filled searches showing how often people used the word scam with them.

Be careful about posters that say good things about the company too. They could be the people from the company themselves posting bogus nice things about them. Funny how most are posted under the name Anonymous. Many of the past employees even comment on the blog or scam search sites and say how they had to make an outrageous amount of sales and weren’t paid.

The key is to be vigilant and aware that these things happen. If it sounds fishy, then stay away.
