NEW CAR<\/strong>
\nWould you pay $7,100 for a car with 137,000 miles on it? A dealership did when we traded our 2006 Prius for a new 2011 Prius. It was a good time to buy to buy a Prius since the new 2012 was out and the dealerships were having to get rid of the 2011 models. It was a bit more complicated getting the deal though.<\/p>\n

First off, when is the best time to buy a car? My answer is when you don’t need one. How does that make sense? Reason being, you are not under any pressure to buy one so you can walk away from a poor deal. You’ll have time to research for the best deal too. If your car breaks and it costs too much to fix then you may end up purchasing a short term car at a much too high price and one that may have many issues that will end up costing more in the end.<\/p>\n

We first got a letter at the beginning of December offering $6,855 and another $500 for the Prius if we completed the deal by Dec 31st. The 2012 models weren’t out yet and we wanted to see one. I waited until the end of the December and called the GM to see if they would extend the offer. He said the 2012 was going to be out in 2 to 3 weeks and that he would honor the deal. That was such a great amount to get back I knew it was the time to do the deal. <\/p>\n

In the meantime I shopped around. I requested quotes through Edmunds.com using their internet quote service. The service requests quotes from nearby dealerships. I’m glad I did it because I found out that a $1,000 rebate was being offered for the 2011 Prius. However, I found out that it was only being offered in the eastern region where the one dealership that quoted was located in Pennsylvania. I called the local dealership on the east side of Cleveland and they said no rebates were available in the Ohio region. So I was planning to drive to Pennsylvania to work out a deal. That was until Feb 1st.<\/p>\n

On Feb 1st the first 2012 model came to the local dealership. And they said that the Ohio region was now offering a rebate. It was $750 though. Good thing they did because I was ready to drive to Pennsylvania. I figured there was no way I’d get back as much at that dealership for the trade-in too. That was until the local dealership changed their tune.<\/p>\n

My wife got to the dealership and started the paperwork with the salesman. I got there and looked at looked to see that he gave us only $6,000 for the trade-in. I think I did one of those cartoon moves where my eyes bugged out of my head. I told our salesman that the GM said he’d honor the deal on the letter. The salesman couldn’t go higher so I asked for the GM. Let the haggling begin.<\/p>\n

The GM showed up and I was irate with him since he didn’t honor what he said. He said the letter said an estimated 132,600 was on the car when they made the offer. I countered with saying he told me he’d honor the deal. After all it was only a week longer than he anticipated so he knew that there was going to be more mileage on the car. He said he can’t do the price since it had more miles on it and it would be hard to sell. I told him I took his word and that we bought lots of cars there and I felt his integrity was at stake. <\/p>\n

The exchanges were getting heated and I could see my wife sulking in her chair. She gave me an indiscreet ‘keep it down’ movement with her hand. The thing is we were out in the open in front of everyone. That was to my advantage. If other customers heard that he wasn’t honoring what he said then he will want to get rid of me one way or another and that was that he had to satisfy me.<\/p>\n

He countered with an offer of $6,500 for the trade-in. Without hesitation I said no. I was ready to walk I was so upset. I knew though that I probably wouldn’t get as good as an offer for the trade-in so I had to play it cool. I said he had to honor what he had in the letter yet. The paperwork said that the car had to be in average or good shape and their analysis rated it a 94 making it in excellent condition. So it should be worth more. He said he’s do the $6.855 and shook my hand. To his surprise and without hesitation I said no.<\/p>\n

I told him there was the additional $500 that he had to honor. He said that there was an extra 5,000 miles on it. I said he should have understood there could have been more since the letter came out in early December and he ok’d the extension plus there was nothing on the letter that said the mileage would effect the price in the letter. He said ok he’d do $7,000. Again I said no.<\/p>\n

Now it was getting to the critical point. We both could walk and I could lose the deal for not that much of a difference or he could say no knowing he may not make much on the deal. Knowing that if I said I’d do the deal for $7,100, he would go for it and not walk away himself. I knew he wouldn’t split the difference either with that amount and if I said $7,200 he would go to $7,100. He agreed to $7,100 and the deal was done.<\/p>\n

My wife sighed with relief as you could cut the tension with a dull Ginsu knife. You have to be stubborn and be ready to walk and to stick to the price that is ok with you. In the end I got the car for around $16,900. I could’ve fought him for the full amount and was right to do so. What he didn’t know is that the regular car battery on the car was going bad and we had to do e-check and all in a couple weeks, so I had incentive to get the deal done too.<\/p>\n

We had been shopping around every half year or so the past couple years. I walked away from tons of deals. In September 2010 we got quoted $15,894 for the car for a 2011 Pruis. So waiting it out I paid about $1,000 more, but I got to drive the car an additional year and a half. Well worth it. <\/p>\n

The good thing about getting the most for your trade-in was that it lessens the amount you owe in taxes. Lake County is upping their tax rate in April so I wanted to get a deal done before then too.<\/p>\n

The best time to shop is when model years are switching. The prior year models usually have deals for them like rebates and other incentives including low interest loans. Don’t fall so in love with a car or dealership that you can’t walk away from them. Don’t fall for the “let me check with the manager” trick. Most of it is rehearsed and is meant for you to take more time thinking about the deal enough to convice yourself to just take the deal on the table. The more time you stay in the dealership the more likely you are to purchase the car. Again, be ready to shop around and expect long days looking for the best deal.<\/p>\n

One cheeseball thing you can do before you trade in your car is not to fill up on gas. Keep it near empty. Don’t bother with an oil change either. They may fuss about tires so it pays to have good ones. They will usually find something wrong with the car to devalue it.<\/p>\n

Sticking to a local dealership helps in case you have to bring it back for anything.<\/p>\n

Next up I had to negotiate the extended warranty with a different guy. Round 2. I did my bobbing and weaving again and I started with trying to get the best deal on the lower packages. What you do is get the best price on the lower ones knowing that they will offer you better deals the more you pay for the better packages. <\/p>\n

Initially he said he could offer $200 off. Pshaw. No where near what I wanted off. I beat him up some more and he offered $300, then $350. Still not enough. He offered a warranty through a different company that was much cheaper, but it was more standard and didn’t offer a hybrid parts warranty. I didn’t want that. I tried to get him lower and he wouldn’t. Do I take the deal or just walk. I decided the price wasn’t good enough so I didn’t get one! <\/p>\n

We had only one wheel bearing issue outside of the normal maintenance with the Prius the whole time we had it. The hybrid batteries are supposed to last over 200,000 and not the 100,000 some thought it would last until. Their warranty already covered some main parts to 10 years or 100,000 miles. If I’m to get a warranty I want something that will get me to at least 125,000 miles. That is when cars start to fall apart. If I pay $1,700 as it would’ve cost me to do so then I still need up to at least four $450 repairs to make it worth it. This car was built to last so I knew I didn’t have to get one. Plus he said we could still get the extended warranty just before the full 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty expires. So I have more time to wait for a deal that is good for me.<\/p>\n

We did also get him to throw in heavy duty car mats for free for the cherry on top.<\/p>\n
