MALLS<\/strong>
\nDid you know that a new enclosed mall has not opened in the United States since 2006. I rarely go to malls anymore myself. I did go to a local mall recently and was surprised there were a lack of brand-name stores as there used to be. Many stores were lacking the pizzaz of a chain store. Some stores looked like a vagrant decided to open a store full of stuff they found on the street. I think one of them was selling a mitten I lost back in ’93. <\/p>\n

Euclid Square Mall was a nice mall and thriving until one by one all the good stores left. It’s still open and it now has a handful of rinky dink stores and a Dillards outlet. Surprisingly, the facility still is in decent shape and the deals at the Dillards there are phenomenal. I remember going to the Orange Julius there all the time. That crap was good. I don’t think I’ve had one…probably since I lost that mitten.<\/p>\n

A site called http:\/\/www.deadmalls.com<\/a> shows malls that barely have any stores left and look like they are ready to shutter. They’re great for going out of business sales. Open air strip malls are much cheaper to operate.
\nWestgate Mall in Fairview Park was torn down and now has a ton of thriving retail stores in its place. Perhaps that is the way to go.<\/p>\n

What isn’t the same with outdoor stores compared to an indoor mall is that the malls are great hangouts for teens. When I was at the mall recently I noticed them all over the place. Lots of hair-tossing Beiber-like guys and overly-expressive giggling gals were prowling the mall in packs of three or more all bunched together to the point they were literally touching elbows or just crowded into each other. If I didn’t know any better I think they became one like an ameba. I think they glue themselves together once they get to the mall. <\/p>\n

I tried to glob onto a group of them and apparently was not welcome even though I crowded into them which I thought was ok. Maybe there is a ritual I have to go through before I can do so. I even asked them whassup thinking that famous line was still fresh. That ought to say how cool I was or so I thought. I never saw teenagers move so fast.<\/p>\n

I think I will start my own roving gang at the mall. Just like the Jets and Sharks from the West Side Story we can rumble with the other glued-by-their-arms teens. I’ll have to get t-shirts made at Daffy Dans with our gangs colors and saying. I’m thinking of powder blue shirts with the saying…”We’re Fierce!”. We’ll be known as the Glamour Boys or perhaps the Willowick Crips, a gang I founded many moons ago.<\/p>\n

There is always a Spencers in a mall so I stopped in to see what they sold. It’s more of a museum to me. I look but I don’t buy. Always seemed to be that way. I do have to stock back up my whoopie cushions.<\/p>\n

I love to people watch and malls are great for such a thing. What not a better place to people watch but in the comfy chairs peppered about the mall. I realized how comfy when the night guard nudged me to wake up as the stores were all closed.<\/p>\n

I also like to race the mall-walkers. They like to hug the inner perimeter of the mall just to maximize their walking distance. Using exagerrated arm movements when they are walking, they look like they are boxing fruit flies. When I race them I give them the signal that it’s on. I’ll draft behind them to reduce wind drag resistance. I usually make my move at The Limited Store and jockey by them (take a few minutes to imagine this as you will do it for the rest of your life any time you walk into The Limited). The race always seems to end at the Orange Julius since I can’t resist the magical taste of an Orange Julius or its Strawberry cousin. <\/p>\n

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT<\/strong>
\nI’ve taught Junior Achievement for years. It’s a great way for students to round out their learning experience with the real world. If you’re interested in volunteering for them and want to learn more about the organization, they are having an open house to talk about JA.
