Lotsa great deals at garden shops. I’m always buying clearance plants. I got a full tray of violas for 50 cents at Lowes that lasted all winter and are blooming like crazy now. The gallon or smaller containers are the best buys. No need to buy a larger plant when the smaller plants will grow in size in no time.<\/p>\n

Home Depot and Lowes have an one-year guarantee on their plants. Should they die within a year, you can get your money back. Many other stores do the same. So keep your receipts as plants can be very expensive. It’s easy to forget or dismiss, but if your lush plant turned into tumbleweed the next year, get yer money back!<\/p>\n

I’ve price-matched sales ads from Aldis with Lowes. Home Depot also prices matches. Has to be a like item. I’ve done it with hanging baskets.<\/p>\n

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA<\/strong>
\nEncyclopedias have been printed by Encyclopedia Britannica since 1768. No more. The last edition was printed in 2010. It will only be available online. The print edition was only 1% of its sales. With the likes of Wikipedia it was only time before the print editions were eliminated. I remember way back when I was a kid having a set of encyclopedias at home and thinking I would eventually have to purchase a set. I wasn’t keen on the idea because they cost over $1,000. Plus updated editions would have to be purchased each year. My how times have changed. Lately I’ve been craving a Hough Bakeries butter cookie. Maybe I can find some crumbs of it in the old encyclopedias. <\/p>\n

LOTTERY<\/strong>
\nDid any of you win the mega millions? Like you would be reading this deals blog if you did. They always say that you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning that winning the lottery. So I plan to improve my odds the next time there is a big jackpot by standing in the middle of a field during a thunderstorm with a 20 foot copper pipe in one hand and an umbrella in the other. <\/p>\n

After I get hit by lightning I will play the numbers from the time I got hit, the birth date of the first person to find me scorched, and my hospital bill. For the bonus ball I would use the number of scratches I get from holding a black cat during the storm.<\/p>\n

That being said one time in a work lottery pool we got 5 out of 6 numbers! And I do play the numbers sometimes. The other day I missed the 3 digit and 4 digit number by one number on the same drawing. Close doesn’t win me squat though. But I do have some black cat scratch scars that I can show off!<\/p>\n

GROUPON<\/strong>
\nGroupon had to set aside more money for refunds than expected putting a dent in their earnings. The stock took a hit from the announcement. I’m still leary about the performance of Groupon since businesses seem to be shying off commiting to deals with Groupon due to the business not seeing return customers that had purchased Groupons since they are waiting for another deal before they return. Plus coupon books like the Our Town and Entertainment book also have tons of BOGO restaurant coupons for about the price of one restaurant Groupon.<\/p>\n

Last year it got in trouble for reporting its gross billings, not just the money it gets to keep from its deals, as revenue. <\/p>\n

I love coupons, so I hope they figure out a way to weather the storm. <\/p>\n

CONSUMER REPORTS<\/strong>
\nConsumer Reports must have some horrible savvy shoppers they used for their story about finding the best deals at stores. They show that a person buying store brand cream cheese paid 99 cents. That sounds about right. Their savvy shopper paid $2.32 while the impulsive shopper paid $3.29. What, did their savvy shopper buy the cream cheese at an outpost in the Arctic Circle? This week at Giant Eagle you can get Philadelphia cream cheese for $1.25 and that is without a coupon! They usually have a .35\/2 coupon if not .50\/2 coupon for the cream cheese that will double at stores that double like Giant Eagle making it a better deal too. <\/p>\n

They say buying store brands is the best way to go. I’ve never found that to be true unless you shop at stores that don’t have sales. I’ve even found everyday prices on name brand items cheaper than store brand at times. I’m really disappointed in Consumer Reports since they came to the same conclusion the other year too. If you wait for a good sale you will almost always find a better deal or similiar price for name brand as compared to store brand. Plus the quality is most likely better. A savvy shopper will stock up enough to last until the next good sale and not have to buy it at a so-so sale. <\/p>\n
