SOUTHEAST VACATION<\/strong>
\nWe decided to get away for another adventurous vacation. I’ve been to all 50 states, but I haven’t been to parts of the Southeast so we flew into Orlando and drove back to Cleveland stopping at cities inbetween. <\/p>\n

We took advantage of the one-way Florida car rental deal. We got a full size car. It was only $224 total and that included taxes to rent a car for ten days. I priced it out to see how much it would’ve cost without the deal and it would’ve cost up to $2,000 to $3,000 for the rental. There are still some one way deals I saw from Hertz available availbable in June.<\/p>\n

We flew with Southwest for $132 for a one way flight. I like to check http:\/\/www.kayak.com<\/a> to find the best flight deals. Southwest allows two checked bags for free so we took them over a flight with United that cost $140. Most of the trip was last minute as we planned it only about a month before we left so I was glad to find a good deal on a flight.<\/p>\n

Hotel deals are the toughest to find with last minute deals so we had to move fast to book the best deals and try to improve on them. I kept looking for a Groupon Getaways <\/a> deal or Living Social Escapes<\/a> , Eversave Travel Deal<\/a>, and Hotels.com Deal of the Day<\/a> for better hotel or B&B deals at BedandBreakfast.com<\/a>. None popped up that worked. They have great deals if you can find one before they sell out. None popped up for the cities where we were staying except Daytona, but they were for longer than what we were staying there.<\/p>\n

We picked up the car in Orlando. The deal from National allowed up to 21 days to return the car. The deals from other car rental agencies allowed only 7 days. One ways are very expensive, but in the spring the rental agencies need to move their car up north as there are less people vacationing in Florida during the summer months. <\/p>\n

For some bizarre reason whenever we take a trip there is usually a natural disaster or weather event that follows us or just misses us. This time around there were not one, but two tropical storms that were almost hurricane strength to hit the area we travelled. Tropical Alberto came close to Charleston, SC and we saw the bands of clouds from it when we drove to Savannah. Tropical storm Beryl hit Jacksonville, Florida. It was the first time in 100 years that two tropical storms hit the same area in May. Charleston last saw one in 1988. When we went on our cruise last August two hurricanes also hit where we were travelling. We just missed both. You may not want me travelling anytime near where I go to unless you want more fodder to write in your diary.<\/p>\n

Our first stop was in Daytona Beach. I bought Restaurant.com<\/a> gift certificates to most every place we were staying. I checked out the restaurants to make sure they were good on http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com<\/a>. The first place we ate at was Captain Steamers. Great seafood even though the place was a bit campy. Plus they were on http:\/\/www.idine.com<\/a> giving me an additional 10% off via my credit card. IDine offers discounts of 5% to 20% off on your total check by linking your credit card with them. Once you collect $25 in savings or more, they send you a gift card for that amount. They have tons of restaurants and you can sign up with them for free.<\/p>\n

The restaurants we went to using the Restaurant.com certificates were mostly great – favorties were Martins in Myrtle Beach, Meridian in Winstom Salem, JJ Bonerz (ribs folks), and Leaf Cafe in Charleston.<\/p>\n

The Entertainment book<\/a> is good to get for cities where you plan to stay for a few days. There are also coupons for national chains good throughout the U.S. All 2012 Entertainment Books<\/a> are now only $5 with FREE SHIPPING when you join the Annual Renew Program (All books $9.99 and $4.99 shipping otherwise). <\/p>\n

We stopped at a cool wine bar called Wine Bank later. No cork fees and a great selection of wines, with some under $20. They sell only boutique wines, those with small production. The gals that worked there sat with us and chatted some. They said we needed to stop at Saint Augustine where Ponce DeLeon found the Fountain of Youth. So we made a point to stop there. Cool town with forts and a neat walkable shopping and restaurant area. I drank from a water fountain there and turned into a baby for about 24 hours. It was cool because I was able to get in free everywhere being a toddler.<\/p>\n

I always pick up coupon booklets in town. We used them to get discounts at the shops and restaurants. Stop at a visitor Center for the booklets if you can’t find them at your hotel or tourist areas.<\/p>\n

Water bottles can cost $1 or more each at stores. Instead we bought a 24 pack at Walgreens for $2.69 and drank them through the trip. I also got a 99 cent RC cola 2 liter that lasted through the trip. A lot cheaper than what they charge at fast food restraurants or pop machines. And whatever you don’t finish drop in a Mentos or two and watch it explode like a fountain for cheap thrills.<\/p>\n

We booked most of the rooms through http:\/\/www.hotels.com<\/a>. They list the available deals for area hotels in an easy format. I had a code for an extra 10% off that they sent me. Deals change all the time but they have an easy format that lets you find rooms closest to your destination with good amount of reviews on each hotel. Best to find deals early as once they sell out of the deal there are none more available. <\/p>\n

You can also find better deals by getting non-refundable deals from the hotel itself, but you may save a little more and if you cancel you pay for the room anyway.<\/p>\n

Our next stop was in Savannah, Georgia. We stopped at Paula Deen’s restaurant and there I had a hoecake for the first time. I never had a hoecake before. Before you start calling you pals about that statement… a hoecake is a bread-like pancake. There were some “other” hoecakes around but they don’t fit on a plate. Savannah is a neat town with a lot of history. The odd thing I noticed was that CVS and some other stores down South didn’t sell newspapers in the store, only in boxes outside the store.<\/p>\n

We made a point to hit the happy hours for food and drink specials. Over the trip we found plenty of deals. Check http:\/\/www.gotime.com<\/a> for deals or grab one of the Scene-like Entertainment rags that they have in every city to find the happy hour deals.<\/p>\n

Next up was Charleston, SC. I really liked the town. Plenty of restaurants and architecturally-unique buildings. <\/p>\n

We stayed at a place that said they were a half mile from town. Turns out they didn’t make it clear that it was a half nautical mile meaning I had to learn to walk on water to make to town. Luckily the hotel offered a free shuttle. They had free bikes to ride too. <\/p>\n

After some issues with the room and the cost for us to have to take a taxi they comp’ed the room for a night. Hotels always ask for feedback so I always let them know what we liked and had issues with. The hotel in Savannah didn’t clean our room the one day and when I checked out the manager asked how our stay was so I told him and he gave me his card so that I can get a deal next time we’re in town.<\/p>\n

In Myrtle Beach we went jet skiing. I got a deal on it. They said they offered a better deal for rentals made before 11 AM. The tropical storm whipped up the swells and waves so I was doing a Dukes of Hazard jumps over them. <\/p>\n

It was bike week during our stay. I prefer to have a clock radio wake me up rather than a revving engine at all hours of the night. <\/p>\n

In Winston Salem\/Charlotte we saw the Nascar race. A relative of mine is an engineer for the Jeff Burton team. It was the first Nascar race I went to and I found out how loud the races are. Most everyone wore ear plugs. I waved to the drivers as they drove by and apparently they were too busy to wave back.<\/p>\n

I had a coupon for IHOP that expired the day before. I gave it to our waiter and asked if we could still use it and he said yes. Restaurants that aren’t hurting for money will usually take an expired coupon as long as it is not that old. I used IHOP gift cards that I got from Giant Eagle that I earned 20 cents Fuelperks on too.<\/p>\n

We hit some North Carolina wineries. The wines were better than I expected. They charge way too much for tastings at around $5 per person. I could see if they waived it if you bought a bottle, but they didn’t. <\/p>\n

We stopped in Mayberry of all places. Yes, the town (actually Mount Airy, NC) is the one where they filmed the Andy Griffith Show. I bought some Goober Toe jam at one of the shops. I haven’t tasted it yet, but it is Tangerine Orange Elderberry jelly (yep, TOE for short). I better take a look at the ingredients first before I slab any of it on my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.<\/p>\n

Our last stop was in Hocking Hills. After all the food and drinks we had we needed to excercise. We hiked the trail there. I heard lots about how people liked it so we needed to check it out. I was impressed. I should have kept hiking through there for a few more days as I think I gained a pound for every day of the vacation. <\/p>\n
