Following the lead of Wal-Mart increasing their wages, Target is increasing their minimum wage from $10 an hour to $11. By 2020 they plan to increase their minimum wage to $15 an hour.

We recently went to a wedding in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and a Caribbean cruise afterwards. We almost didn’t with two enormous hurricanes, including hurricane Irma that was initially going to hit Fort Lauderdale head-on.

We were going to cities and countries I have never been to. I also did things I never did, including being a bartender, playing adult dodgeball, holding five live birds in one hand, winning a decent amount at the casino rather than losing all my money, and drinking drinks I never had before.

Being hurricane season we made sure we got travel insurance. Our credit cards also gave us some additional insurance (without cost) as some credit cards will do.

Remnants from hurricane Irma was evident. There was a lot of debris heaped up in front of homes. Mostly palm tree fronds and other plants that were damaged from the hurricane.

Sand had to be bulldozed off streets and back onto the beaches. They were little hills of sand that were dotted all along the beach.

We did use coupons while in Fort Lauderdale. I brought some coupons for Subway that I got in the mail that worked there. I picked up a tourist book at the airport that had a coupon we used for lunch to get sushi downtown. Airports always have tourists guides that usually have coupons in them.

We also took advantage of weekday happy hours and specials like half off wine bottles.

At a restaurant called Casablanca Cafe my wife ordered the swordfish. I told her the swordfish I have tried were tough. This one was delicious and tender. Gotta go with the seafood when at cities by the ocean.

The hotel we stayed at, the Nobleton, was awesome. I found it on for $89. It was rated very high at around 4.5/5. I always go by the guest rating and not the hotel rating. I then check Trip Advisor to make sure the ratings jive. I read the best and worst comments to make sure they say the same thing and to know what to expect.

The room was huge with a kitchen and couch. Great swimming pool. It was walking distance from the beach. Free coffee k-cups and granola bars.

We were there for a wedding at the W hotel. What I like about going to hotels is that they have newspapers and if you are there on a Sunday you can pick up more coupons from the free Sunday papers on their counter.

The wedding was fun and they danced up until about 9:45….and then we ate dinner! Yep, heard it was a Florida thing with dinner so late. Good thing they had some h’or duerves that I scarfed down after the ceremony at 5:30. $99 or Less

We went to the beach each day we were there. While we were in the water we noticed fish jumping because they were being chased. One of the gals saw a marlin jump out of the water. When I was on the beach I noticed what was most likely a tarpon chasing bait fish. It was huge. I later found out that someone got bit by a shark up the coast. Same thing. Fish were jumping because they were chased and apparently the shark mistook someone for fish. Silly shark. Fish don’t wear bathing suits.

We then embarked on a cruise on Royal Caribbean to Haiti, Jamaica and Cozumel. Hurricane Maria had hit some of Haiti so I wasn’t sure what to expect there. I thought that maybe they would even cancel the stop, but they didn’t.

The islands need tourists more than anything to get money back into the economy. Some islands may never recover the jobs they lost with the hurricanes. About 90% of Puerto Rico is still without power and around 50% without water yet. It will take time to build the infrastructure so that power and water are back to normal. Then the buildings and homes have to be rebuilt. A good many people may never come back to live there. There has never been two Category 4 hurricanes in the Caribbean and the season isn’t even over. The water has warmed 2 degrees due to climate change and that is fueling stronger hurricanes.

We booked the cruise through We use them for all our cruises now. There are a lot of sites like them and what they do is sell unsold cabins at low prices. Initially we booked an inside cabin for around $650 and then I kept checking for the price to go down. I got it down to around $570 plus a $100 credit that can be used on the ship for purchase and excursions. Then I noticed they had a inside balcony (faced the inside of the ship and not the ocean) for $622. Great deal as balconies usually cost around double or triple the cost of an inside cabin (no window). An oceanview has a window and it is usually around $200 or more per person…almost the cost of the cruise itself when added together! I asked how much the ocean-facing balcony cost and he said $82 more per person. Done! So I paid around $650 for a balcony. It’s usually very hard to find a balcony for less than $1,000 for a 7-day cruise.

Our first stop on the cruise was Haiti. The port in Haiti is in Labadee, a resort area built just for Royal Caribbean guests. There is an electric fence to keep people from coming in. The beaches were nice. We went on a jet ski ride…we found it was a tour, so we had to “follow the leader”. Lame. I love to bust out moves on a jet ski and I couldn’t do it because we had to follow their rules. So remember, if it says jet ski tour…it is lame.

There was a swim up bar that we hung out at for a bit. Very cool. Met some people that were from Chardon. We were chatting when one of the bartenders told me to get behind the bar. I didn’t know what she was planning. She told me to get back there. So I did.

She had me grab a large cup and told me what ingredients to put into them. I made sure I added and extra splash or two of rum even after she told me to stop. I shook it. She then said it was mine. I must look like I enjoy free stuff.

Back on the ship we got ready for dinner. You get assigned times to eat, unless you make plans to eat at restaurants that charge (a waste of money). The dinners are free, including appetizers and dessert. You can even order multiple dinners, appetizers, and dessert at no extra charge. I took advantage of it and by the end of the trip my belt is now slotted into a different hole.

We had three great couples that ate with us. Very different backgrounds. One was from New York and then moved to Florida. One was from Erie and then moved to Florida. He was a pilot, now retired. The other was from Manassas, Virginia. The husband had a stroke so he was in a mobile cart. He apparently had sleep apnea and one day had a stroke. He was in a band and that affected his singing and all. He did sing at karaoke as did my wife and the husband of another couple. So we had a fun group. Sometimes you sit with duds and it can be a long week, but these couples were nice and they didn’t smell.

I got an all-you-can-drink package this cruise. It was the first time I did it. I usually bring bottles of wine on the ship and then buy a bottle drink package. This time they offered a discount on a combination all-you-can-drink and internet service package for $52 per day. The internet costs $15 regularly as it was and the drink package was already around $55 per day, so it was a great deal. Most drinks cost around $13, so in a few drinks it paid for itself. It even included tip.

I ended up trying drinks I never tasted before. Some of the drinks I tried for the first time were a Tom Collins (naw), Hennessey (hello alcohol), a Manhattan (meh), Gin & Tonic (yuck), a Nutty Irishman (yum), and plenty of others. If I didn’t like it, it didn’t matter since I could ditch the drink and get another one. I won’t be surprised if they change the rules on the drink package after I took advantage of it.

This cruise was the first I saw this happen. They had a table set up where they were selling bottles of wine. Some that were around $50 regularly for as little as $15. Great deal.

At the shop on the ship I bought a couple 1 liter bottles of duty free Absolut vodka. They were on sale for $15 and I spun a wheel to get an additional 15% off. Great deal!

Our next stop was Jamaica. It was rainy and we went on a snorkeling trip. The snorkeling wasn’t that great. We then went to a beach where the locals shopped their wares…apparently that also means some of the funny stuff their are known for. Not for me, but others partook. On the ride back it was still raining and they fed everyone enough booze that people danced away in the rain. We then found out that there were two couples from Chesterland that live just a few miles from us. One was getting married. Small world.

We ventured out into Falmouth, the port we docked at in Jamaica. A bit sketchy. I walked into a grocery store. I think someone set the store at 168 degrees temperature rather then 68 degrees. Wow, was it hot in there. My fingernails were melting.

A couple that we sat with at dinner said that a lady approached them while they were in Jamaica and asked them to take their kid with them on the ship. Sad. A lot of the islands are poor and with the hurricanes I’m sure there will be difficulty surviving. No power, no clean water, limited food, no shelter. Things we take for granted here in the U.S. And here I’m enjoying opulence on a cruise.

I played a lot of sports on the boat. I came back with four medals for winning or getting runner-up in pool and court volleyball and dodgeball. I met a lot of folks playing sports. Many half my age or younger and from many nations.

The boat was the Allure of the Seas and is one of the largest in the world. It took forever to go from one side to the other.

It has a flo-rider, a wave “pool” where you ride a boogie-board on it. I never tried it before. I told the gal I never did one before and she gave me some quick tips. So I did as she said and got up on it and was able to control the board no problem, staying in one spot. I kept waiting for the big wipe-out. It was too easy and so my wife gestured for me to do a spin around. What the heck. So I tried it figuring it was ok if I wiped out since I was just staying in one spot and I needed to leave to go play a volleyball competition. I tried to rotate and it didn’t really move like I wanted to, so I just decided to crash and burn.

Next up was Cozumel. Supposed to be real good for snorkeling so we did another snorkel tour. It was better. The crazy thing was that the boat had to figure out where the current was and get ahead of everyone. The current was strong and you really didn’t need to swim as it carried you pretty fast.

Saw some jellyfish and they said they wouldn’t hurt us. Umm, ok. A few barracuda too. I wanted to pet one because they just seemed unhappy. Later on we saw a big stingray after we got back on the boat (in pic below).

We went shopping at the stores for souvenirs. At a jewelry store one of the sales guys was trying his best to sell jewelry to us. My wife found a ring that looked similar to her lost wedding ring. It had a princess cut sapphire in it. She loved it and I knew I had to get the ring. Let the haggling begin! He started off at $450. Then he said he can give me a discount and went down to $210. I said that is too much. He went down to $170. I said take off the 1. My wife gasped. He then showed me the calculator with a price of $90 and requested it in cash. I grabbed the calculator and pressed 70 in it and said that is the price I will pay. Then he did the meet somewhere inbetween price and asked for $80. I said $70. He asked the manager and she obliged. New ring for the wife that she loves for $70. Better than a refrigerator magnet souvenir!

On our way back to Fort Lauderdale around midnight we went out on the top decks of the ship. Overhead were tons of birds flying in swarms around the ship. It was an eerie sight since we were in the middle of the ocean. I realized that we must have crossed the path of migrating birds and they were attracted to the lights of the ship. Many cities by the coast dim their lights as not to affect migrating birds.

I then realized that it wasn’t a good thing because I knew they would be bouncing off of parts of the ship as the winds were brisk. Looking at the deck I saw birds that were knocked out, many of them already dead. Another gal and I started picking up the survivors and separated the dead ones. She was planning to be a wildlife ranger so she was familiar with rescuing birds. At one point I had five live birds in my hand. They were perfectly fine with hanging out in my warm hand. We eventually put the survivors on palm frons in the Solarium and some on the putt-putt course.

I’m a bit of a birder and I thought that most of the birds we found were vireos. I later checked online and found out that they were. Some were wrens. One was a green heron that was none too happy.

There are usually casinos on the ship. I found one slot machine where I kept winning. Every day I would play it and once I won more than I put in I would cash out. The last day I put in $50 and I quickly doubled my money. I wanted to cash out, but figured I would play some more and see if I could win big. In short time I found out it doesn’t pay to be greedy. I lost the $100 and I put some more cash in to see if I could win it back. Nope. In the end though, I won around $400 overall. That’s the best I ever did at gambling. My lesson to quit while I was ahead played true.

Hurricane Nate hit Cozumel after we left. Ya know, Cleveland weather can get cold and drop lots of snow, but at least it’s weather I can shovel.
