THE END?
Sometimes when one door closes another opens. It’s perhaps time to move onto another chapter of my life and what happened recently has spurred it along.

Unless something drastic changes, the days of writing my deals blog is ending. As I near retirement age, it’s something that was always on the back-burner and it looks like that time has come. I knew one day I’d have to retire my Coupon Guy cape or if anything, pull it out for special occasions.

What triggered it was, recently, one of my commission advertiser publishers decided, for no real good reason, to end my affiliation with them. Not that I made any good money from them and enough to cover my costs. The hours I put into the blog and web-site were also substantial and cut into other projects I needed to get done. I didn’t mind, because I knew I was helping many people and I enjoyed being a “reporter” and all.

A paid subscription could be an option, but that takes time to set up and I don’t know that there is enough interest in it. People have so many options for finding deals and all and sometimes too much data can be over-whelming. However, many years ago there were a lot of local deals blogs and groups and those disappeared too.

The number of classes I teach waned too. I used to teach 2 to 3 classes a week back in the couponing heyday. For some reason, it dropped off to nearly nothing even though finances are tough for many. Maybe the economy isn’t that bad after all. The Pandemic first led to a decrease in the number of classes I taught. During that time, many of my contacts at the libraries that booked me have moved on. Libraries also lost a lot of funding from the state, so their budgets were limited too. Either way, I was always happy to help teach those that needed to save more money.

I enjoy teaching classes, so I don’t see that ending. I’ll always be open to teaching classes. I’ve taught tens of thousands of people to save money. Aside from helping teach how to save in my Couponing/Savvy Shopper class, I’ve taught classes on how to save on weddings, travel, gas, for mothers, for teens, for seniors, for the blind and deaf, cutting the cord, and others. I got to know how to get around Ohio just by going to the multitude of libraries in the state.

The couponing world has also changed. Gone are the days of tons of coupons in newspapers and rebate or rewards programs. Now, the Corporate world is all about profits. They eliminated sales ads and all the programs that couponers enjoyed, especially all the freebies. No more double coupons too. The Extreme Couponing show didn’t help things. Even television segments on saving money and coupons waned. I used to have to keep a clean long-sleeved shirt in my car in case a TV station contacted me to do a last-minute segment. Not anymore. But just like everything, it will cycle back one of these days.

I’ll need another outlet for my creative juices. All the typing cramped up my hands, arms and shoulders, so I won’t miss that. Perhaps I’ll have another calling late in life…or not.

Thanks to all that have stuck with me all these years as I posted deals, news, and stories. I appreciate all the nice messages I received all these years too and other messages. Some of you even became friends.

So as I figure out my next steps, I may post a smidge on my Coupon Guy Facebook page and my web-site. In the meantime, keep on saving!

FOOD EVOLUTION
Some of the food we eat in the US had humble beginnings and not as popular or expensive as they are now. There’s a reason most of us don’t grow up eating and loving tripe, lamb eyeballs and worms, but food most every loves like lobster wasn’t initially popular.

A couple hundred years ago, lobsters were not valued as food and were mainly eaten by the poor, prisoners, and indentured servants. Native tribes near the east coast used lobsters as fertilizer or bait rather than food. Don’t tell that to people going to Red Lobster.

Chicken wings were not a thing until a few decades ago. Prior to it they were cheap byproducts of a chicken. Back then I remember doing an all-you-can-eat deal on chicken wings for $5.99 and many places had dime wing nights! Now they are priced $1 or more per wing. As they became more popular prices soared. Supply and demand! Another option is to use chicken drumsticks as they are much cheaper and much larger too! I may be onto something. Just put sauce on it and they can be called monster chicken wings.

One of the most expensive foods by weight is caviar. It’s salty sturgeon eggs. The supply is very limited. Not only are you extracting eggs from only select female fish, but they are from one species of fish, a sturgeon, that aren’t plentiful. They don’t taste particularly great and cost upwards of $100 an ounce. At that price I’ll pass and instead the next time I have boba tea bubbles I’ll pretend it’s caviar.

Tomatoes were considered poisonous back 200 years ago. Evidently, the fallacy partly came about because lead from pewter plates would leach into tomatoes and cause death and people during those times thought it was the tomato causing the deaths. With tomatoes in popular items such as ketchup and pizzas they sure have turned the corner on acceptance.

Calamari ..or squid is a food item that if you told me in my youth would be on most every appetizer menu decades later I’d think you were crazy. Now it’s a regular item like nachos and wings. So what will we be eating another 20 years from now that isn’t on restaurant menus now? Whale? Kangaroo? Cicadas? Pigeon wings? Chipmunks bites? One of them might make it onto an Applebee’s menu. I’d vote for chipmunks because they need to be on a menu rather than digging holes in my yard.

I GOT BIT
Something happened to me for the first time. I was painting a bridge that we have in the backyard over a little creek. We went to go on a bikeride afterwards and I noticed a splotch of what I thought was paint on my shin. I started to scratch it off and noticed it wasn’t paint. It was a tick! A couple more scratches got it off. Luckily, it wasn’t burrowed in deep, so I got it out before that happened and didn’t need to use tweezers or other methods to extract it.

It freaked me out because I was worried about it giving me Lyme disease. I didn’t get the telltale bullet mark from it and it didn’t get infected. No fever or anything like that either, so I got lucky.

I spend a ton of time in our yard. We live in a woods setting, so I’m surprised it hasn’t happened before. I’m like a monkey always scratching at myself with any bit of skin discomfort or swatting at bugs and that might have saved me in the past. When I’m in the yard I sometimes look like that Australian Raygun breakdancer always writhing around and gesturing at myself to get the bugs away from me. I use a lot of bug killer on my yard too, so I’d hope that helps too. The bugs probably avoid me too, seeing me move around weird and think I’m the one with some funky diseases or affliction they don’t want to get.

IN THE CARDS
I stopped at the Rite Aid in Painesville to catch their last days before they closed. Everything was up to 90% off. The store was pretty much gutted except for a ton of cards that were 90% off and medicine and personal care items. Towards the end they took another 20% off. I bought cards for as little as 7 cents!

I bought around 100 cards. I’m set for life now! I bought some of the funny birthday cards that are usually too expensive to get. Otherwise, I would have gone to Dollar General for their 50 cent cheap-looking cards that are supposed to be funny, but more like groan-funny. The more expensive cards are more witty funny with funnier pics and not just about growing old or some other lame humor. At Rite Aid I bought extras of the same card, so hopefully I won’t give the same card to someone two years in a row. I’ll just send my multiples to people that are busy because they won’t remember what I sent them anyway after one year.

Good thing we got a generator last fall. We got a whole-house Generac generator through Lowes and used gift cards at Giant Eagle for Lowes to get free GetGo gas from October through April for two cars. Plus we got a ten-year warranty special when we bought the generator.

This last storm was a doozy and took out our power, internet and cable. A tornado landed only about a mile away from us. Oddly enough, our internet stayed up until the morning after the storm and then went out. Cable is still out. It’s like living back in my childhood again without cable and internet.

We got a generator that was hard wired and piped into our natural gas supply, so there was no need to keep filling it up with gas. Up until this last storm there were short blips of power going out, but not long enough to trigger the generator. Of course I thought there would be no more power outages after we bought the generator with our luck, but this last storm changed all that.

Recent summer storms seem to be more devastating with lots more tornadoes in northeast Ohio. With climate change the area where tornadoes hit has shifted it seems. Ohio averaged 16 tornados per year since 1804 and we are already at 66 this year. Having insurance for these storms is that much more important, especially house insurance and car insurance in case any branches or trees decide to smash into them.

If you want to watch local channels in place of cable you can do so with a cheap antennae that attaches to your coax connection on your TV (find them at Best Buy, Menards, etc). Just set the TV to Air and then scan for channels. I’m watching the Olympics on channel 3 using a flat antennae that attaches to a window.

Be sure to get credits for any services you lost during the storm. For instance, contact Spectrum to give you a credit for the amount of time cable or internet is down. They won’t do it automatically. You have to call or chat online with an agent.

AT&T gave me a $30 credit. Initially, they said they would give me a 3 day credit then said a 5 day credit then $25 and then $30. It seems each time I call AT&T they ask if it’s ok to talk about other products I tell them no. Sure enough, at the end of the call they start doing their sales spiel about their products. I tell them I said no to talking about other products. I then get the, “oh…”.

IT WAS GREAT WHILE IT LASTED
My cable bill was cheap because I was grandfathered into an old Time Warner contract before Spectrum purchased them. Recently, Spectrum decided to do away with that offering and push anyone that was grandfathered with that deal to their regular offerings. That means I get less channels and pay a ton more.

When I moved to Spectrum my bill was around $35 and then creeped up to around $55. Now it will cost $80. For now I switched to the Basic plan that offers 15 channels of my choice on their list. The plan can’t be found on Spectrum’s site which is sly on their part. They will email you the list of channels. They can’t be found online. They used to post them online, but not anymore.

Eventually I plan to move to a similar plan on streaming video for my viewing entertainment, probably Sling that is much cheaper. Either that or I will go to Walmart at midnight or a bar at closing time for my entertainment needs.

WEIRD PURCHASE
I had one of the strangest “purchases” at Walgreens recently. I bought some items that were 90% off, but they were even cheaper when I took a gander at the receipt. They were free! Yep, they rang up 0 cents. No coupons, no nothing. Just zip on the receipt.

Oddly enough, I can return the items to make a profit. One was cough medicine (I always end up with a cough cold at least once a year, so I stock up on medicine if I find a great deal). It rang up 0 cents, but the return value was 93 cents. It originally cost $12.49.

I also got skin astringent for free. It was originally $4.99 and came up 0 cents. Return value was 40 cents.

All I can figure is the items were slated to be given away to charity and they just hadn’t been taken off the shelf. When I spoke with a cashier there at that store previously they told me after they go 90% off and some time goes by and it still doesn’t sell they offer it to a charity. I’m surprised anything at 90% off doesn’t sell quick enough before that happens. I just wish it was 90% off some fun stuff like cookies or beer and not medicine and skin repair.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY
The 2024 sales tax holiday will take place from 12 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8. Pay no sales tax on back-to-school items and other purchases for a limited time each year.

The sales tax holiday will include all tangible personal property that is $500 or less except watercraft or outboard motor required to be titled pursuant to Chapter 1548. of the Revised Code, a motor vehicle, an alcoholic beverage, tobacco, a vapor product or an item that contains weed.

New this year are dine-in food purchases at restaurants are tax-free too.
