CARIBBEAN CRUISE
We recently took a cruise. Hence the reason for no recent blogs. We made stops in St Thomas, St Croix, Antigua, St Lucia, and Grenada. It was a seven day cruise with one day at sea. I prefer the cruises with very little to no days at sea because I want to visit islands and not spend my day on what really is a floating hotel. Some guests don’t mind staying on the boat and doing very little. Not me, I like to explore. Sometimes I’ll even wear a Christopher Columbus outfit when I disembark and then I ask the natives if it’s India I’ve discovered.
We booked the cruise through Vacationstogo.com. We got it for $542 for an inside cabin. They used to be able to lower the price up to the day of the sailing if the price went back down, but now the price locks in within 75 days of the cruise. Same goes with booking through Royal Caribbean and many other cruise operators for that matter. However, you can still get upgrades! The problem is that you may lose any credits (money that can be spent on the ship or on excursions) that you started off with when you booked it. We got $250 in credits as part of the deal when we booked the cruise so we didn’t want to lose them.
We paid for an inside cabin, a cabin without a window. After numerous calls requesting an upgrade and lots of no’s, we got upgraded to an Oceanview, a room with a window the size of a large plate. I kept calling and got an upgrade to a balcony. All for free and we kept our credits!
We got the flight for $331 roundtrip, but we had to travel one way with two different airlines to get the good price. I checked flights using kayak.com and others like Priceline, but Southwest doesn’t participate in those sites (either does JetBlue), so I had to book the flights separately. I used Southwest flying there and United coming back. It was nice with United because it was one way with no stops.
We got a credit with Southwest when their priced dropped after we booked with them. I kept checking to see if the price went down and it did eventually. It went down from $191 to $143 so we have a $48 credit to use within one year of the purchase date. The nice thing with Southwest is that they don’t charge a fee for rebooking. Most other airlines do. I like Southwest because we get two free checked bags too.
I ended getting our bags for free with United too because I opened a credit card with them. Mainly it was to get 40,000 miles with them for getting the credit card, but the perks were good too. It comes with two United Club passes, no annual fee the first year (I plan to cancel after it), discounts on items including food and drinks on the plane, Priority boarding and I get to beep the horn on the plane steering wheel whenever I want during the flight.
The hotel we stayed at, the Casa Blanca hotel we got through Travelocity using a promo code. It was in Old San Juan and that is where we wanted to stay. It had a rooftop lounging area with bathtubs that were awesome. It was like a Jacuzzi, but not. The hotel was very old though with no elevator. Clerks would take you luggage up to the room.
We hit the happy hours around town. One nice restaurant had good bottles of wine $15 to $20 each.
There are Groupons and deals for restaurants and businesses in Puerto Rico. I didn’t have much time to research and get the deals though. My mother-in-law passed just before the cruise. It was tough, but nice to spend some time together after a very stressful time. It really makes you think about life. We’re glad and lucky to be able to take nice trips (on the cheap, of course) and enjoy life. Losing loved ones makes you re-assess your life to make sure it’s in order. Too many Americans don’t even take all of their vacation days or don’t get enough for that matter. Everyone needs to take them to spend time with loved ones and keep a good work/life balance.

Internet on the ship was ridiculously priced. It was $60 for 24 hours or $30 for one hour! Needless to say, I didn’t use it on the cruise. I didn’t see any happy hour internet specials either like last time we went. Instead I got wifi on the island, usually at a restaurant after a purchase.
On the cruise we entered just about every raffle. You’re odds are good, usually 100-1 or better since not may people enter the raffles. It’s usually even better odds since most people don’t show up for the drawing and the winner must be present to win. Half the time they would call out a winner and they wouldn’t be there. One lady had her husband’s name called, but he wasn’t there. It was for a sapphire necklace too. Something tells me the hubby had some making up to do after that.
We won two raffles! One was for a free facial at the spa and another was for free artwork.
The first day of the cruise is when they offer the best discount for booze with an additional 10% off already discounted prices. I got a liter of Jack Daniels for $18. I could’ve gotten a liter of Bacardi rum for $7.50, but we had enough already. They price match any prices you’ll find so grab any flyers you find because sometimes they do offer better deals elsewhere on the islands. They were selling booze in the place where we check in before boarding and the sales booklet had some good deals in it that I could’ve used to price match.
We brought bottles of wine with us. The Royal Caribbean cruise ship allows wine to be brought on board. Not beer or liquor though. Not sure why just wine.
Since our last cruise we moved up a level in the loyalty program to Platinum status, but we found out that we really don’t get much more for doing so. However, due to some issues we had with Guest Relations we got a lot more.
I noticed that our card didn’t say we were Platinum members, so I went to guest relations to have it fixed. They said they couldn’t pull our number up because they didn’t have internet. That didn’t make sense to me. I called Royal Caribbean and got the number, but even that wasn’t enough. I was told to speak with the folks with the Crown and Anchor people the next day. I told them I wanted it fixed now since I didn’t want to waste my time fixing an issue when I could be enjoying the island. I was amazed that they couldn’t help a long-term customer with a simple request. I got a bit prickly, partly because the guy was being dismissive, but he finally gave us our cards back with Platinum status on it. That told me they could do it, but didn’t want to, so it didn’t end there.
When we had a minute we spoke with the Crown and Anchor person and she said the problem was with training the staff to access the system. So as I suspected, they just didn’t have all their ducks in a row.
We ended up meeting with the manager of Guest Relations. He apologized for all the trouble. He said they are having specific training with all of the Guest Relations staff to make sure they know how to get in the system and all because of the issue I had.
After all was said and done we got two bottles of wine, a free dinner at the restaurant that charges $30 extra to eat there, and a 20% discount for a future cruise. More importantly, there’s a good chance it won’t happen again to anyone. So it’s important to let management know when there is an issue, otherwise they can’t fix it. How they respond to it will determine whether they get my future business too.
We went to the restaurant that charges that we got for free and it took 45 minutes for us to get an appetizer when in the normal dining room it took about 2 minutes. We were starving too. I was ready to eat my hand. I’m glad I didn’t because I need it to type and stuff.
A plate of chocolate covered strawberries was found in our room the next day as an olive branch for waiting so long. Yep, while we waited the manager came over and asked how things were and instead of the usual ok I was honest and told him how long we waited.

The cleaning staff does their magic with our towels to create towel animals every day.
For dinners you get sat with total strangers. Sometimes they are good company and sometimes not so much. Luckily, I think we’ve had great dinnermates for every cruise we’ve taken. This one started off awkward though.
We switched our dinner times and the person said they would seat us with younger folks like ourselves. It didn’t happen. We got sat with two couples with very young kids and also a widow. Not a problem until the one kid clanged on every piece of dinnerware through the whole dinner and made a mosaic of the sugar packets on the table.
In the end the one couple with kids got sat with the rest of their family that was at other tables into one and the annoying kid’s family never showed up again. We ended up with four new dinner-mates and they were awesome. They were from Connecticut, but originally from Puerto Rico.
Our waiter, Edwin from India would do tricks with napkins and toothpicks. He was a blast.
Ummm, let’s find another beach…
Taxis were the way to go to travel to spots around the island. They were much cheaper than doing an excursion for the most part. Some islands are super cheap while others charge a lot. We found Dominica and Granada to be expensive for taxis while the other islands were around $8 per person round-trip to most places.
We pretty much just asked where the best snorkeling beach was and that is where we went. I’m a snorkeling freak. The best part of snorkeling this trip was that I made a $3 profit snorkeling. In Antigua I was snorkeling around and near shore I notice a dollar bill at the bottom. Then I see another one and another one. I searched around some more for dubloons or any other currency, but that was it. Off to the side I did see a stingray, so perhaps it was his money or maybe it set a trap for snorkelers and I was too fast for it to get me.
At another beach there I saw a pair of sunglasses, a plastic hanger, and a plastic fork in the water. They were too deep for me to get them though. I figured there was a cool shark that would appreciate finding them too so I left them there for them.
You can haggle on prices on most everything. We got discounted prices on jet skis, rubber rafting, and souvenirs just by haggling. I didn’t have pelts or salt to barter with, but they liked American dollars.
I like to shop at the supermarkets when I go to exotic locales. It’s always interesting to see the different prices for everything along with the oddball items they sell. Instead of paying for items like chocolate or other goodies at the souvenir places we found them sometimes to be much cheaper at a supermarket.
Prices are in Caribbean dollars – about a third of the price would be U.S. dollars.
I found a CVS in San Juan where I used my Extrabucks. They also had a Walgreens there. No Rite Aids. There was a new Walgreens in St Thomas too.
The CVS had plenty of souvenirs on the cheap. We always get a 2 liter of pop to drink at a store and I found them on the cheap at CVS. They only had a 1.5 liter though and it was .97 for Diet Pepsi. On the cruise ship they charge a ton for pop, so you have to get a beverage package deal to make it worthwhile. The pop package deal was around $60 for the week. I was able to bring the 1.5 liter bottle on the ship without any issue though.
We got a wine package that saved us almost $200. The bottles we got were around $60 each, but with the package we paid around $30 for them. Their cheapest bottle without a package was $26. We found a Mer Soliel Chardonnay and Charles Krug Merlot we like a lot. I checked the wine list to see the prices of each on the package deal list. Some bottles were priced around $30, so it pays to check the wine list before you order to plan which wines cost to most to get the best bang for your buck.
The ship had many activities. I did all the volleyball tournaments, including one against the crew in the pool. The water in the pool was salty instead of tasting like chlorine. I sure hope that wasn’t people’s sweat.
One activity we went to was karaoke. My wife sings awesome. Me, not so much. You can figure out how talented the singer is going to be by seeing how many hands they put in their pocket while they are singing.
One hand in pocket = I’ve done this before and I stink.
Both hands in their pocket = I only do this when I am drunk and your ears will convulse in pain, but you will enjoy making fun of me.
Unfortunately, most everyone had one or both of their hands in the pockets when they sang.
