CVS
Toms deodorant, toothpaste or mouthwash – 99 cents after $3 extrabuck
Cadbury creme egg – free after extrabucks – through Tuesday 1/31 only
American Greetings cards – free after $3 extrabucks with purchase of three 99 cent cards
Digiorno pizza – BOGO – 2/$5.49 after $2/2 coupon – use with $12.50 rebate beer rebate with purchase of 9 pack or larger of Miller beer. I found a 12 pack of Miller at Giant Eagle for $8.99. So 2 pizzas and the beer you get it all for $1.98!
I got a great tip from John T, a faithful reader, that pointed out that at CVS you can only need to spend 98% of $30 to receive the $10 gift card deals. The deal prints at 29.40 or above, so if you just wanted to buy 5 Bounty at $5.99 each (a recent deal) for a total $29.94 would still get you the gift card. This same 98% works on regular extrabuck deals too. If it says you need to spend $10 on something to get $3 extrabucks, you get the $3 extrabucks if you buy 9.80 or more, so bottom line 98% = 100%!

JC PENNEY
JC Penney recently announced that they are scrapping percentage-off sales and coupons. Instead, they will offer everyday low prices. They will also have a best prices promotion on the first and third Friday of every month to coincide with when people get their paycheck. Seasonal promotions will also be offered.
Some stores like Wal-mart and Marcs offer everyday low prices, so it will be of interest to see if JC Penney will spur new sales with their new strategy. Wal-mart has been struggling to spur sales too, so I don’t think JC Penney will do any better, especially when people will only shop twice a month at JC Penney’s when they offer their best deals on alternate Fridays. Friday is not the best day to go shopping either since it is the end of the workweek and most people want to go out to eat or go home and not go shopping. Some stores do get predictable with their sales so sometimes people aren’t spurred to shop there. Stay tuned to see how this change does for JC.

ARE YOU FIXED?
Did you switch to the variable rate yet for your natural gas? Fixed natural gas rates under NOPEC are $5.95/mcf. If you have a variable rate it is $4.06/mcf. Natural gas prices keep dropping so the variable rate reflects a lower rate for that reason. NOPEC, the consortium of communities offering lower natural gas prices, can be reached at 1-888-848-7914. If you don’t belong to NOPEC, call your gas provider to see what they offer for a variable rate as compared to the fixed rate.

SENIOR DEALS
One of the things I can look forward to getting older is more discounts! Senior discounts come at age 50 and older. It pays to ask for the discount as most stores offer them. It’s not like getting carded when I was 21, but the first time someone asks me if I qualify for a senior discount I will have to rap them with my cane. Eventually my hurt pride will be overcome with joy with the new savings. The list below shows what discounts businesses will give to seniors. Some may vary by store or may change. Ask the manager about the discount to verify they offer one.

TOP TEN THINGS I TELL PEOPLE IN PRIVATE
10) I’m really an alien and my peoples have a message to earth. The message is for people to stop posting what daily chores they are doing on Facebook.
9) I’m really uncomfortable when we go out to the bars after you’ve had a unicorn and rainbow painted on your face at the festival.
8) Is everything ok? Because it seems your nose is whistling a much higher octave than I’m used to. I normally don’t want to stuff bologna in my ears to blunt the shrillness of it.
7) Please don’t bring beer to the movies.
6) Do you mind moving your chair over some. Your nose hair is still in my soup.
5) Did I ever tell you about the story of a friend of mine with astoundingly great distance projecting food and spittle from their mouth while I ate dinner and had a conversation with them. Please pass the carrots.
4) I noticed that you didn’t chat any during dinner and instead were texting. So I’m sure you won’t mind while I read today’s comics section out loud, especially the hilarious Family Circus one.
3) Hey, that bad breath of yours… I don’t mind it, but it is melting the erasers on my pencil.
2) Please stop yelling at me when you get upset. It keeps me from hearing the voices in my head that say I should kill you.
1) You look really good with a beard, but I think that it clashes with that dress that you are wearing. (the least funny one always seems to be number 1)

ARE YOU FIXED?
Saturday, January 28th, 2012ARE YOU FIXED?
Did you switch to the variable rate yet for your natural gas? Fixed natural gas rates under NOPEC are $5.95/mcf. If you have a variable rate it is $4.06/mcf. Natural gas prices keep dropping so the variable rate reflects a lower rate for that reason. NOPEC, the consortium of communities offering lower natural gas prices, can be reached at 1-888-848-7914. If you don’t belong to NOPEC, call your gas provider to see what they offer for a variable rate as compared to the fixed rate.

How do they sell them for so cheap? The $25 gift certificates usually indicate you must spend $35 to get the $25 off. Not that hard to do when you go out to eat. Some restaurants even include the alcohol. On the $50 gift certificates you usually have to spend $100 (great when eating out in groups). With the $75 gift certificates you usually have to spend $150. The $100 you usually have to spend $200. Most indicate that they also include a gratuity of 18% or 20% although some restaurants don’t even enforce it even though it is written in the terms of the gift certificate. Tipping is supposed to be before the coupon, so they just want to make sure the waiters and waitresses don’t get gipped.
Over 18,000 restaurants across the U.S. and 250 in the northeast Ohio area on Restaurant.com.

WESTSIDE MARKET
I stopped at the Westside Market recently. I was expecting some high prices for fruits, but instead found great prices on them. A half pint of raspberries or blackberries were just $1 and a pint of blueberries were $1. I got 9 papaya and two bunches of bananas for $5. Strawberries were $1.50 a pack. I got 7 lemons for $1. Bags of spinach were $1. Whole eggplants were $1.
The cold weather helps keep the produce fresher during the winter. During the summer the produce tends to need to be eaten right away.
Much of the produce now comes from South America and Central America during our winter months allowing for lower prices, so that’s why there are summer prices for produce.
The vendors love to haggle so always throw a “freebie” item in with your purchase. Inspect the produce before you buy it. Nothing makes me less unhappy than getting all psyched up to eat a mango only to find out it is as nasty as underneath a booger-picking second graders desk.
If you haven’t been in that neighborhood recently you’ll be surprised to see many new restaurants. There is the Bier Market, Bar Cento, Dragonfly, and many more. Most all were packed when we went. Mitchell’s ice cream is even building a facility to make ice cream there. Another Cleveland renaissance area.
Many coupons for the West Side Market is in the Our Town and All Around coupon book and the Entertainment book.
NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS:
MONDAY & WEDNESDAY: 7am – 4pm
FRIDAY & SATURDAY: 7am – 6pm
Try getting there at the end of the day since many stands try to wheel and deal more when there are not as many people there.

CRUISES
Sad to see the Costa ship disaster in Italy. The cruiseline is blaming the captain. The Captain even abandoned ship before everyone was taken off the ship…a no-no for Captains. Costa is owned by Carnival. They will take a financial hit of around $100 million due to the ship running aground. The passengers never did their safety drill. The U.S. has strict regulations that makes sure passengers do it within 24 hours. Most cruises I’ve been on do it before they embark. In the wake of it look for cruises to go down in price. GUARINOS
Did you ever go to a restaurant and get welcomed with open arms? We sure were at a recent visit to Guarinos in Little Italy. After eating dinner at Maxi’s I wanted to head over to Gaurino’s because on Friday’s they have half off bottles of wine. Happy hour only goes until 7 and I was freaking out since a long good-bye with a couple gals we had dinner with was making me do a ‘little kid having to go dance’ to get going. We get to the restaurant and ask if they are still doing happy hour. The gal says sure, that’s fine even though it was officially past 7:00.
We sat down and the rest of the night we were treated to great food, drinks, and conversation. The owner and her daughter were there and they hit it off with us. They showed us all the pictures of their children and grandchildren. We heard many a stories about the family and history of the building (it’s been open over 90 years). We even heard about Danny Green who stopped there on occasion, he being the infamous mobster whose life was portrayed in the movie, To Kill an Irishman.
You gotta try their martinis. The daughter treated us to a chocolate one and one from grappa that was creamy. Yum. They are only $4 during their happy hour. We got calamari half off for happy hour too at $6 instead of $12. Tasty and fresh. Plus of course, wine at half off. We got the Dave Matthews cab. Well worth the price. You can find a BOGO coupon for them in the Our Town coupon book (up to $10 value). The place has a Victorian look to it. Nothing like you’ve seen elsewhere. So next time you’re in Little Italy stop there for a treat.
