MOVING ON UP
There is much talk of increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour and passing a federal law to bring it up to that amount in stages. Surprisingly, we are pretty much already there!
• Costco is raising its minimum wage to $16 an hour (their average wage for hourly workers is around $24 per hour).
• Hobby Lobby’s mimimum wage is $17 an hour.
• Signet Jewelers, the company that owns Kay Jewelers, Zales, Jared and other jewelry stores nationwide, plans to raise the minimum wage for its U.S. workers to $15 an hour by spring 2022.
• Aldi stores in the area pay upwards of $14 an hour to start.
• Target is raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour. It already increased it from $11 to $13 in June 2019.
• Amazon is at $15 for the minimum wage.
• Best Buy is at a $15 minimum wage.
• Wal-Mart is increasing their pay to bring their average pay to $15 an hour.
• Kroger average pay is $15 an hour.
• Amazon pays at least $15 an hour.
With all these stores and many more already at $15 an hour, others will have to follow suite to keep their employees. Retail and restaurants everywhere have help wanted signs up, so it’s inevitable that they will have to boost wages. When the economy gets back to normal you probably won’t see many places not paying at least $15 an hour. Sure, some businesses will not be able to afford it, but others will figure it out. On average, about 20% of all business fail in their first year and 50% in their first 5 years.
Another push to not increase the minimum wage is because jobs will be lost. I’d rather see quality jobs paying a living wage than any that will cause financial struggles, forcing people to work multiple jobs and taking time away from family. Some companies have been so greedy they have kept people working part-time rather than full-time to avoid paying them health benefits. These same companies are pushing to keep wages low. When you do start making decent money you then become a target to be let go. It’s all an imbalance.
We also saw how valuable retail and restaurant jobs were during the pandemic, enough that many earned hazard pay. Most of these jobs are minimum wage jobs. I saw many retirees and not just teenagers working these jobs and they deserve better than to be the lowest paid workers in the U.S.
Minimum wage was set so that it would be able to pay for college, especially with the fact that many teenagers work for minimum wage. Not anymore. Student debt is at record levels and the increase in college costs and stagnation of the minumum wage has exacerbated the issue.
Costco has always been at the forefront of paying workers a living wage and they are consistently rated the best employer. Happy workers mean better workers. Win win.
There are too many billion-dollar companies whose wages are so low, their workers qualify for government assistance. Some workers are in poverty even though they work a full-time job. Taxpayers have to then pay to make up the difference by paying into government assistance, even though these companies make billions in profits and can afford it. It’s an imbalance that needs to be corrected.
The beef with many people is that prices will rise. Well, if all these companies are already paying around $15 an hour and nobody noticed prices jumping, then that point is moot. Inflation has been tame. It’s usually commodity pricing that affects prices more than wages due to supply or demand. For instance, produce prices will jump due to the cold freeze in Texas. It happens when there is a freeze in Florida too with oranges. Milk prices dropped last year when Covid hit when demand slumped and then when demand increased it went right back up. Last year milk commodity pricing fluctuated the most it ever has in one year. A gallon of milk at Aldi was fluctuating between $2.29 and $2.69 last year when it had been $1.99 or less for years. You can find commodity pricing here (including milk): https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/milk
I’ve been finding butter on sale for $1.49 and that’s the lowest in years. Eggs are back down to below $1 for a dozen when it was near double that at times in the past few years. Avocados were .29 at Aldi the other week (.39 this week) – an incredibly low price. Asparagus is .99/lb on sale recently and that is the lowest I’ve seen it in a long time, not that there is a huge dropoff in demand for asparagus and it’s distinct aroma it causes to your tinkle.
Conversely, gas prices are up and that is mainly due to the Texas freeze. Once OPEC decides whether they want to increase or decrease supply, it will affect pricing too. Semiconductor prices jumped because of supply issues. Cars can’t be made because of it. Task forces are being started to see what can be done to stem the supply issues.
Again, recently supply and demand affect prices more than wages do. No job working full-time should put you in poverty and qualify for government assistance. If companies make billions in profits or can afford Golden Parachutes for execs that bankrupt companies, they can afford to pay their lowest paid workers a living wage and save taxpayers for having to make up the difference.

THROW SOME SHADE
Cleveland used to be know as Forest City. Hence, the name of the company Forest City Enterprises that was started here in Cleveland by the Ratner family. The Cleveland baseball team was known as the Forest Citys back then too. The reason for the name was that Cleveland was well-forested. Development, tree disease, and pests reduced the number of trees where that moniker isn’t reflective of the current number of trees across the area. The Holden Arboretum has a drive that will try to help change it back.
They launched a “People for Trees,’’ campaign to enlist volunteers to plant 15,000 trees across the region by 2025. Holden is asking people to pledge to plant a tree. Holden will provide the following:
Which trees are best to plant in Northeast Ohio.
Where to purchase your tree.
When and how to plant your tree.
Tips for caring for your tree as it’s growing.
Cuyahoga County’s 2020 urban tree canopy assessment showed that the county lost 6,600 acres of trees between 2011 and 2017, accounting for a 2 percentage-point reduction in tree cover, from 37 percent to 35 percent. The assessment ranks Bentleyville with the most tree canopy, and North Randall the least in Cuyahoga County at 10%. According to the U.S. Forest Service, a healthy tree canopy in urban areas should be 40 to 60 percent. Halting the current rate of loss would require planting 50,000 trees. Cleveland’s tree cover fell from 19 percent to 18 percent during the period, and is on track to reach 14 percent by 2040. Ohio lost three million trees between 2013 and 2018, according to the arboretum.
I am a member of the Holden Arboretum. After being cooped up inside I enjoy being out in their woods and garden areas. The recent winter storm last year damaged many of their trees as it did to many others in the area, including mine where trees were snapped in half. So now is a great time to replant new trees to replace those that were lost.
I’ve planted many trees in my yard, including pine trees, black cherry, white birch, buckeye, bing cherry, maple, bald cypress, weeping cherry, hemlock, red bud, gingko, and dogwood. Much of our yard has tulip trees, oak, shag hickory, elm, birch, beech, and sassafrass. I would also like a groot tree, but I don’t see them sold at stores.
Trees help filter out pollutants, create shade to cool houses during the summer, reduce CO2, create condos for many animals, and help me lose calories with all the raking I have to do in the fall. Tree lined streets are visually attractive. Chagrin Falls has the highest percentage of trees in the area. And it’s one of the most beautiful cities around.
I usually will buy trees when they get clearanced at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Many garden centers also have deals on trees. Buying them when they are seedlings is an affordable way to purchase them too.
The Lake C0unty Soil & Water Conservation District sells seedling of native trees and shrubs at their plant sale on April 23rd and 24th at the Lake County Fairgrounds. They mailed out order forms to homes in the county or order via their site at https://www.lakecountyohio.gov/swcd/Tree-Sale.

BIRTH OF A COUPONER
Recently, an eighth grader in Baltimore contacted me about couponing. She found my web-site googling couponing. She was doing a report on it for school and wanted to interview me so that she could understand the world of couponing. Her goal was to get a lot of great deals and then donate what she bought using coupons to a food bank. What a great kid!
I spoke with her about how coupons work and sites that will help her in her quest. She’ll be putting together a collection of coupons, so that she can make her shopping trip and get a haul of items to donate. She has Giant stores (not Giant Eagle) in her area and I sent her the sites that do coupon deal breakdowns for those stores. Giant stores double coupons of .99 and .50 yet, so she should be able to get some great deals.
Through the years I taught Personal Economics for area teens at Junior High Schools through Junior Achievement. Couponing is not usually on the top of the list of hot topics for teens. However, it hit home when I would try to make it relatable. I would mention that they’ve probably have heard their parents argue about money. I could see the faces of the teens change and with some you could see it was something they were dealing with at that time. Most all of us have had to deal with parents upset when it comes to money, especially when a parent is laid off or loses a job, yet the bills don’t stop. Children are helpless because they can’t yet work and many feel guilty because they are the source of many of their bills.
The biggest thing is most people never learn how to budget or learn how to save money by couponing until it’s too late. There used to be classes like Home Economics that handled personal finance, but not anymore. Of all the important things in life, kids grow up to be adults without knowledge of how finances work, except for what they have learned from their parents, if anything. Sometimes they learn bad habits of parents like running up credit card bills and getting into debt. So I was impressed an eighth grader wanted to learn couponing when she doesn’t even have to buy groceries and toiletries. Best to learn before hard lessons force you to. Even if you are ahead of the game, it’s always best to keep saving when you can. There always seems to be a medical bill, car repair, home repair, or other big expense lurking.
I tell anyone that attends my classes to have their kids cut out coupons and match them up to the 50% off or more deals in the ads. That way it teaches them how to save and keeps them from having their own money issues down the line. If your kids are self-sufficient, they won’t be harping you for money. Win win!
