BAGGING IT
Many stores instituted apps or scanners to scan-as-you-go and bag your groceries while shopping. Then you would pay at a kiosk. One major store just bagged their app. Wegmans, after introducing their SCAN app, has decided it wasn’t worth the rampant shoplifting losses to keep the app.
Some shoppers would scan a cheaper item or intentionally not scan an item. Some data found that the technology had a loss rate 18% higher than those that did not.
The technology is different from the self-scan checkouts. For the most part the cameras catch errors when self-scanning. Sometimes technology just can’t replace a cashier without costing more.
WAIT FOR IT
Traveling can be stressful, especially now with the number of flight delays and cancellations. One site might take some of the stress away by reporting how long the TSA lines are at specific airports. Best not to be surprised with a super long line for TSA, so check this site to time out how long you will need to get to the airport.

KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL TRIP
One of the trips I’ve been wanting to do is the Kentucky bourbon trail. We finally made a trip there after many years talking about it. What spurred it was to see our baseball players we hosted play in Louisville. The Columbus Clippers team played the Louisville Bats during the time we were there. One problem We had 4 players on the team to start the year. There were none there when we went on our trip. One made the Guardians and two were in Akron and another retired. One got promoted back to Columbus after our trip along with another one that moved back down this past week. Oh well. Sometimes timing is everything. We did see a baseball game there anyway.
We stayed at hotels using Hotels.com. Best to book early as the place we stayed eventually sold out and prices kept rising. We got Secret low prices on the site just by having an account with Hotels.com.
We drove down. To get the best gas prices I checked https://www.gasbuddy.com. I only needed to fill up once (Prius!) and it was $2.97 a gallon after using a Speedway gift card that got me 10 cents off per gallon and they also took off 3 cents for being a Speedway Rewards member.
Charring the inside of a bourbon cask to add “flavor”.
There were some bourbon distilleries in downtown Louisville where we stayed and then more within an hour away. We’ve been to plenty of wineries, but this was the first time going to bourbon distilleries. The smell of each was alluring like the smell of a good wood firepit fire. We did many tours and learned things like bourbon is made of 51% minimum to around 70% corn, around 20% rye and the rest wheat.
Back in the day Prohibition shut down a lot of distilleries. Then some lawmakers worked in a bill that allowed people to buy “medicinal” bourbon. Yeah, sometimes as kids we got some whiskey to “fix” a sickness…more like, hey kids, take this so that you aren’t as whiny and will go to sleep. The tastes of the bourbon did give a kick and I’m sure killed any parasites I had camping out in my body.
For tastings they are allowed to pour up to 1.5 ounces total, so usually we got 3 to 4 tastes. The bourbons with more rye tended to be smoother. Some bourbons were stored in old rum or orange curacao barrels (Angels Envy bourbon in rum barrels were the best we tasted overall). Those had some nice flavors. The oak barrels are used once and sent to Scotland for their scotch and whiskey storage. From there they send them to store tequila and then to the Caribbean to store rum.
Some bourbons are so popular people camp out hours before they open when they sell the good stuff. People then resell it for tons more. One bourbon, an Old Forester 25 year Anniversary bottle even cost $50 just to taste it!
We hit the most popular ones, including Angel’s Envy, Old Forester, Jim Beam, Heaven’s Hill, Willet, Makers Mark, Four Roses, Woodford, and Buffalo Trace.
At Makers Mark I even got to dip my bottle into the red wax to seal it. Very cool. I also resisted the urge to also dip my hand into it too.
I found some deals off of this site for Louisville, including discounted tickets for the Louisville Slugger Museum and other museums: https://www.letsgolouisville.com/ and https://www.louisvillefamilyfun.net/deals
The Louisville Slugger Museum is where they make baseball bats. We took a tour of the factory. You are right next to people and machines where they make the baseball bats. I would find that annoying to have people watching me work all day long. Then again, the jobs looked pretty monotonous, so maybe having people filter through spiced up the day. It was very cool to see how they are made. It was hard not to grab one of the bats being made and just swing it a few times.
Yum Brands is headquartered in Louisville and include the brands KFC and Taco Bell. Of course, we had to try Kentucky Fried Chicken in Kentucky. I had coupons for KFC – surprise! The coupons was for two chicken sandwiches for $7.50. When we got to the window and got our food they said they gave us an even better deal. They couldn’t find the key to enter the coupon we had so they entered another one that was a BOGO deal. So we got both sandwiches for $5! The Law of Attraction worked again!
We used a Restaurant.com gift certificate for Kingfish in Jeffersonville, IN (we stayed across the river from Louisville) to get a discounted meal. We got the broiled seafood dinner and it was delicious. Great views and a band was there to entertain us.
I found the best happy hour deals at: https://www.letsgolouisville.com/happy-hours-in-louisville/
Besides Colonel Sanders, the most popular person to come out of Louisville is Muhammed Ali, the boxer. Both of them are buried in the same cemetary.
On the way back we stayed in Cincinnati. Plans were to see a Reds game and get tickets from a scalper. Before the game we stopped by a place called Keystone Bar & Grill that had half off bottles of wine for happy hour and half off all their mac-n-cheese entrees for their Monday special. It was in Covington, Kentucky. From there we walked across the bridge to Cincy. There was a Yard House there and they have great happy hour deals too with their apps and drinks half off or discounted.
We then had to find out where the scalpers hung out. I saw a batch of them by the entrance to the stadium. I told the scalpers I wanted stupid-cheap tickets like around $5. They scoffed at me. I figured I wouldn’t get them that cheap, but close. There were about three sets of scalpers. One had $70 seats he wanted $35 each for them and another wanted $20 each for some upper deck seats. I told him $15 for both. He scoffed again and continued trying to sell them to people that were streaming in. I had to bide my time. We went to the Team Shop. I watched their futile attempts to sell the tics from the window of the Team Shop. It was around the third inning and before they might up and leave I knew I had to make my move.
I went up to the guy again and said $15. I said he won’t be able to sell them, the game is almost over. He said no. I wasn’t going to bicker over a few bucks, but I had to get a deal, so I told him I’d do $17. He said $20. I said $17. He said I had $20. I told him yes I do, but I’d only do $17. I held the $17 out to him. Then my wife says we can go. He took the $17. Thanks for the wifey for tipping the scales.
We get inside and went down to about the 5th row by the first base side. I didn’t even look to see where our actual ticket seats were. The seats we sat in were probably the $70 seats. By now everyone had their seats and nobody would fuss with us. Problem was there was a dude a few rows behind us that had to comment on nearly every play. Yeah, that guy that annoys everyone because he just wants to get noticed. After hearing his loud outrages through a few innings, to save our hearing and sanity, we got up to check out the stadium.
I’ve been to 19 of the 32 stadiums after crossing the Reds stadium off the list. Of the thirteen left I’ve been to all the other cities, except Philadelphia, Houston, and Milwaukee, but they either didn’t have games that day or it was the off-season. Can’t count them until I step inside.
After the game we stopped at a restaurant afterwards. It’s $5 burger night. Got my $5 deal after all.
