It’s Labor Day and a good time to reflect on all things to do with jobs.

Unemployment Rate: 3.5% – Record Low
Available Job Positions: 11.24 million – a huge jump from the around 5 to 7 million available jobs during 2014 to 2020.
Available Workers: 5.67 million – Nearly 2 jobs positions available per worker
Quit Rate: 4.18 million in July 2022 for a rate of 2.7%, near record high
Labor Participation Rate: 62.4% – increased from a low of 60.2% in April 2020 – ten years ago it was over 66%
Federal Hourly Minimum Wage: $7.25, same as it was since July 2009 when it was last raised
Average Hourly Earnings: Increased 5.2% over the prior year.

The numbers show there are tons of jobs, but not enough available workers. Lots of people quitting their jobs and a record number of retirees means that employers will continue to have issues finding workers. Between 2008, when the first boomers turned 62, and 2019, the retired population grew by 1 million retirees per year – during 2020 and 2021, that number increased to 3.5 million and has been increasing ever since.

Although not officially raised in nearly 15 years, Capitalism has caused the unofficial “minimum wage” to explode. Supply and demand. Low supply of workers means demand for available workers is high thus causing wages to explode. Not enough workers means businesses have to entice workers with higher hourly wages. Competition for workers has increased it even more. Poor management and poor pay has been exposed when some businesses can’t find or keep the workers needed. With the high price of gas, workers have to work an hour or two just to pay for the gas and all before they start earning anything, so getting a job close to the business helps.

Low wage jobs are seeing the biggest wage increases as businesses fight for the limited amount of workers. Many businesses are making record profits, so it’s not like they can’t afford it. Small businesses are the ones hurt most as some have thin margins. Many are trying to make up the difference with price increases. But with price increases, workers want their raises to keep up with inflation. In the past that is why raises were around 2% to 3% because it matched up with inflation. One of the last best years for worker raises was in 2015 when inflation hovered around 0%, meaning raises at 2% to 3% catapulted worker earnings.

We’ve all seen stores close early because they are short-staffed. Young adults and teens going back to school will shrink the number of available workers. The slowing of immigrants into the work population has also had an effect on filling open job positions. High inflation hasn’t even lured back enough workers. Government handouts can’t be blamed as it’s been a year since they were last offered. Many people have switched fields during Covid when people lost jobs and found other fields to work, especially those in the restaurant business.

Times have changed the job landscape. Lots of young adults and teens saw their parents get laid off. With that this generation seems to be more loyal to themselves rather than their company. You reap what you sow. Perhaps the changing job environment will change the dynamics of how companies treat their workers and hopefully for the better.

The First Energy/State of Ohio Government House Bill 6 bribery scandal has produced a pending lawsuit settlement of $49 million that, if approved, will be distributed to around 2 million customers. You will have to opt into the settlement. There isn’t a definitive amount that customers will get just yet. Plus the case has to be settled. First Energy has settled other lawsuits related to the case, so I’d expect this one to be also. The case has a hearing on Nov 9th to determine the settlement.

Under the proposed settlement any customer of FirstEnergy subsidiaries Ohio Edison, the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, or Toledo Edison who paid any rates, fees, or other costs related to the HB6 scandal between Jan. 1, 2020 and June 22, 2022 would be eligible.

HB6 gave a $1 billion-plus ratepayer bailout, since repealed by lawmakers after the bribery scandal was revealed, to two Northern Ohio nuclear power plants owned by Energy Harbor then a part of FirstEnergy), as well as other policies that benefited FirstEnergy.

NOPEC, the default electricity supplier for much of Northeast Ohio, is temporarily moving nearly all of its more than 500,000 customers to their utility’s default choice so customers can save money on their monthly bills. The billing change will take effect in the next month or two. No fees will be charged for the switch. NOPEC is making this move because its standard program price is now much higher than the default pricing (NOPECS gas pricing is lower than current suppliers). The plan is for customers to be opted into NOPEC again in spring 2023. At that time customers will get letters and need to respond if they want to opt out, which is the standard process that usually happens every three years.

NOPEC’s standard price is currently at 12 cents per kilowatt-hour. Ohio Edison’s is 6.7 cents, while the Illuminating Company’s is 6.8 cents per kilowatt-hour. The disparity in pricing can be caused when a fixed price widens from the variable price. The current price jump in variable pricing is being attributed to a hotter than normal summer causing electricity usage to spike and international tensions. Fixed prices are great when the market price goes up, but when the price drops the opposite is true. It’s a gamble as to which is best. Keeping an eye on the market and the prices offered is key to making sure the price you’re being charged is the best available.

Many municipalities use an aggregator, like NOPEC, as their supplier. NOPEC pulls customers together and purchases energy in bulk to give customers steadier, and sometimes lower, prices. If a customer doesn’t choose a supplier, they are put in the utility’s default service called the “Price to Compare.”

Every so often when we are out and about I get a free drink. It happens for various reasons. And no, it’s not because I’m a Brut cologe-laden Rico Suave and purred the right way impressing those of the female presuasion. Sometimes the restaurant needs to correct a booboo and they use drinks as their apology. This past week it happened twice. Once because there was a promotion and they were giving out shots and the other was because they were trying to get rid of some stock.

We were at Masthead Brewery after a Browns game and the bartender got my beer. I noticed another beer that I don’t see often on beer draft boards, so I inquired about it. It was a Baltic Porter. He said that I could have it for free. I was thinking he would just give me a taste. Instead, he gives me a glass of it. Perhaps it’s due to the Law of Attraction. I give out an energy of wanting a deal and the world bequeths them upon me. I have to figure out how to use that power in some other aspects of my life.

Anyway, the beer was very unique. It had some sweet tones to it and an almost Christmas Ale taste to it too. What made it taste so great was because it was free.

We sat out front on their patio. The place used to be an office supply store and I believe was a car showroom for a short time. I’ve worked downtown for over 35 years, so I could tell you about most every building downtown. I’ve been in most every one. Knowing downtown helps in other ways too. I know where to get free parking!

The meters downtown usually end at 6 pm. You just need to feed quarters until that time and then they aren’t monitored unless the sign says there is a special occasion. In the morning during the week they start checking again. They don’t check on weekends unless the sign says otherwise. If you buy the parking meter a drink, they almost always add an extra hour to the meter time too.
