STORE GRADES
It’s time for the annual Store Grades. Most stores saw their grade unchanged or moving very little. Most went down in score, a trend that’s been happening for years. Many stores didn’t improve their rewards programs or sales to entice customers to shop at their stores. Inflation caused a lot of prices to rise, so even sale prices were high. It was hard to even find 2 liters of Pepsi or Coke for 99 cents anymore. Being a savvy shopper is more important than ever!
One big change is that many stores stopped mailing ads and/or even putting ads in their stores or newspapers. Customers now have to fumble through their smartphone or PC to dig through the deals (find ads for stores at https://www.flipp.com). It’s unfortunate because going through a paper ad is much easier and quicker than going through one on an electronic device.
The grades are weighted most on which have the best deals, but also take into consideration service, staffing, rewards programs, coupon policies, and other money-saving factors. In years past I have given stores an A grade, but the reduction in freebies and tightening couponing rules have dropped grades, so none earned higher than a B-. Gone are the double coupon days and that brought grades down too.
A large hodgepodge of stores earned a C-. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. Giant Eagle has gas discounts with Fuelperks/Advantage Pay and the Warehouse Clubs have discounted gas while the other stores don’t. Other C- stores like Walgreens have a couple rewards program while others don’t. Heinen’s has quality products and a clean store, but limited deals and a minor rewards program. Marc’s has closeout deals while the others don’t. They all have their own niche.
Without further adieu here are this year’s Store Grades:

They are all about quality, but a box of Cheerios is the same at Marcs, Giant Eagle, Dollar Stores, etc. Aside from the bakery, prepared foods, and meats, the rest of what they sell for the most part is just like any other store.
