COUNTERFEIT COUPON BUST
A counterfeit coupon ring was busted and three ladies were arrested in Phoenix. They were producing coupons and selling them. The authorities confiscated 21 cars and $25 million worth of coupons. They were only doing business that were referred to the site. Umm, yeah, that’s a big red flag.
Doing illegal stuff is just not worth it. There are plenty of legitimate sites and coupons in the newspapers to save ya money so why chance it. Buying on eBay or other hidden sources can lead to trouble. If it seems fishy, run! Problem is some people start to blur doing what’s right and what they feel they can get away with, especially in this economy. Some people justify their actions when stores and manufacturers tighten rules and make redeeming a pain when they reduce expiration redemption dates and all.
Back some years ago there were free after coupon items e-mailed around. Those were fraudulent too. That’s why stores stopped taking internet coupons back then. Stores are doing a good job of making cashiers aware that those coupons are illegitimate, so most stores take them now.
Problem is, sometimes the cashiers fuss about the legitimate ones. I really wish they manufacturers would just put the coupons in the newspaper inserts to avoid spending time and money printing coupons. Never seemed to be a problem with coupons in newspapers.
Many stores have inconsistent rules too. One CVS told me they didn’t take expired extrabucks and kiosk coupons. Another CVS store told me they took them expired even if they were 5 years old. If you’re not sure of the rules, just ask or check their coupon policy online. Some stores don’t always follow their own listed rules though. It can be up to store management to choose what they will accept and what they won’t. New cashiers or the nasty ones can be notorius for not getting the rules right.
And you’d think stores wouldn’t make it a policy to take expired coupons, but Tops did when they were here, a year a half before they closed. Makes ya long for the days of no expiration date coupons. Coupons were much better and much easier to use years ago. Rules and coupons have gotten worse since the Extreme Couponing show debuted.
Check out the Coupon Information Corporation regarding fake coupons at http://www.cents-off.com. It’s a non-profit association of consumer product manufacturers like Hershey’s and Proctor and Gamble that is dedicated to fighting coupon misredemption and fraud.

I’ve noticed a lot more “now hiring” signs at retail stores which is good. Usually they show up when the high school kids go back to school. It’s a bit early for that yet. Seems to be many more openings than closings this year too, so good to see that happening too. Still plenty of states with high unemployment. Congress still needs to do things to spur the economy and not put it in reverse.
