ALDI PRICE CUTS

CHILD LABOR
Hey Mom, I’ll see ya after I work my shift. I’ll do my spelling homework and finish cleaning up my Lego’s when I get home after dark. Make sure you pack me my favorite fruit roll-ups in my lunchbox for tomorrow. That could be a conversation heard if new work rules go into effect in Ohio for 14 year olds.
I started working at age 10. I was in the fifth grade. It was a newspaper route. Unlike nowadays, I delivered door to door to over 75 customers putting the paper where they wanted it. Customers didn’t have to trek down their driveway in their PJs and robe to get the paper in the dead of winter. Now newspaper delivery people drive around tossing papers on driveways. Times have changed.
I then started working at a retail store, Jote’s at the age of 15. The reason I’m bringing all this up is that the Ohio Legislature is voting on allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to work between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. during the school year. Under current state and federal law, most 14- and 15-year-olds can only work until 7 p.m. during the school year, and until 9 p.m. during holidays and the summer (June 1 to September 1). Senate Bill 30 would change state law only, allowing minors to work the extra two hours year-round so long as they receive parental approval. The legislation does not roll back current limits on how many hours 14- and 15-year-olds can work in a school day (3) or during a school week (18). Problem is are 14 and 15 year-olds clammoring to work more hours, if at all?
In 1979, nearly 60% of American teenagers aged 16 to 19 were employed, an all-time high. In 2023, around 35% of teens have jobs. In 2022, those aged 16 to 19 years of age comprised about 11% of the workforce, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. So you can see why lawmakers want to increase the labor force pool. Perhaps, getting older teens back in the workforce would make more sense.
This on the heels of the Europe and North American working-age populations expected to decline from 730 million to 680 million over the next two decades, according to United Nations estimates. There will be a good chance not enough workers will be available to fill entry-level open positions, just like is happening nowadays.
I’ve worked two or three jobs throughout my lifetime. My choice, but it allowed me to live my lifestyle while saving for retirement. I still try to have a work/life balance and I think the younger generation prioritizes it too. There seems to be a shift in how the younger generation views work. As children saw their parents complain about work and get laid off and have a poor life-work balance it gave teens a reason to avoid work or find jobs that fit their beliefs. Some portray the younger generation as lazy and entitled. Are they? Or are they not letting work rule their lives?
I’ve heard from management at retail stores and restaurants that some young workers don’t even bother to come to work. I grew up respecting my job and would never think to not call in if I couldn’t or “didn’t” want to come in. With low unemployment for entry-level jobs younger workers know they can easily find another job. Don’t get me wrong, there are slackers in every generation. I think as you get older you are exposed to layoffs and other cutbacks enough to be concerned where your next paycheck will come. You do what you have to in order to keep your job and sometimes that can get out of hand. The fear of losing a job might not be a worry to someone that doesn’t prioritize work as highly as others.
This year at my work there were three people in their 60s that died while still employed. That’s a lot for a small amount of workers in the building. Not knowing what tomorrow brings, does the younger generation have it right prioritizing a better work/life balance? We all work to hopefully enjoy retirement. Those three didn’t. I saw recently where someone posted about a local teacher that was a week from retiring and he passed away. Talks of raising the retirement age for Social Security seems obscene when in recent years life expectancy decreased. It’s also one thing to retire, but also another to retire healthy enough to get around and still enjoy life.
So does the younger generation have a point? Are they forcing the issue on employers to move the needle. Europe treats it’s workers great. Plenty of vacation and sick leave (U.S. legally has none). They have substantial maternity leaves for mothers and fathers alike. Also, they have plenty of laws that don’t allow businesses to take advantage of workers. The un-aptly named “right to work” laws in the U.S. gives companies the right to fire anyone for pretty much any reason. Unions gave workers some power, but only 10% of the population works for a union. It peaked at 35% in 1954. So it seems like the younger generations are taking control of their work life in a different way because nobody else will help.
Going back to employers potentially being able to have 14 and 15-year olds worker longer and later, what could the affects be? You know there will be companies that take advantage of the change and break the rules. There already are and the rules haven’t changed.
Recently, the Labor Department said it investigated three franchisees that operate 62 McDonald’s restaurants across Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio. They found the businesses employed 305 children to work unlawfully in terms of the hours on duty and tasks performed. Investigators determined that two 10-year-old children were employed, but not paid, and sometimes worked as late as 2 a.m. The three employers were ordered to pay a total of about $213,000 in civil penalties.
The legislation in Ohio comes as U.S. Department of Labor data shows a significant increase in the number of minors employed in violation of the FLSA. The national count hit nearly 3,900 in 2022 compared to about 1,400 in 2013.
Speaking of child labor, I was at McDonalds the other week and I had one of the workers help me get my McDonald’s app fixed. I thought by the high voice and feminine looks they were a girl. I noticed on their name tag it said ‘minor’. I also noticed their name was Logan. Yep, haven’t hit puberty yet and working for the man. Soon enough he will grow a beard and be asked to work 12 hours a day because they are short-handed, but they might stick with working only one shift.
MENU PLEASE
Anyone that loves the QR codes restaurants want you to scan to see their menus, please raise your hand. Yes, not many of you. I don’t like them either. I don’t want to have to fuss with my smartphone and use any data just to see a menu. What’s next… are restaurants going to ask us patrons to wash our own dishes after eating?
During Covid it made sense to go menu-less with restaurants struggling and while the world figured out how Covid was spread. It costs restaurants to have QR codes, so it’s not free. Wi-fi is always sketchy and web-sites don’t always work easily, so why aggravate customers right after they sit down. If you want to cut down on costs, try using the same gross towel to wash table after table…oh wait, you already do that.
What irks me too about some menus are items listed without a price. I ususally ask the price of each item when it doesn’t show a price in the hopes that they will put prices on all items in their menu. Bottles of wine can be super-expensive and if a price isn’t listed you bet your bippee that I am going to make sure I know the price. The times I haven’t asked it seems I usually end up getting raked.
I appreciate technology when it makes things easier like with cars not having to manually roll down windows on cars, brake lights, and not using a key to open the door and start the car. QR codes menus are just not a better option. Hand me over a sticky menu any day!
So restaurants, please do your part not to raise my blood pressure. Make it easy to order by handing out menus. List all the prices. Give me the happy hour menu or put it on the regular menu without me having to ask for it. Put your specials on paper because you know I’m going to ask you about it numerous times. If not, I might be asking for a tip for helping out the restaurant do the basics.
