ALMOST AS GOOD AS A CD
DiscoverBank just upped their savings rate to 3.9%. Almost as good as CD rates, if not better than at some banks! The best CDs have been around 5% (Citizens Bank has them in-branch at 5.5% for a 10 month CD). Check the interest rates to see what you get now at your local savings bank. You’re most likely will be surprised how little interest you get. Find banks offering 4% or more (mostly smaller ones) at https://www.bankrate.com/banking/savings/best-high-yield-interests-savings-accounts/.
Online banks offer tons more interest on savings than local banks because of their low overhead. Credit Unions used to have some great rates, but I haven’t seen that so much in many, many years.
At 3.9% you will earn almost $1k in interest with a $25K deposit for one year. Most local banks are at around .1% or maybe .15% and that will earn $15 or less annually. Yeah, that big of a difference.

GET OUT OF DEBT
After hitting an all-time high of $930 billion of credit card debt in Q4 2019 and subsequently dropping until reaching a new record high of nearly $1 trillion this past quarter, consumers are feeling the pinch of higher interest rates on credit cards. With around 58% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck it is making it tougher to get by, especially since wages are keeping up with inflation.
The days of zero Fed interest rates may never come back unless we go back to a deep recession, so ensuing higher credit card interest rates are here to stay. With unemployment at record lows the forced cooling down by the Fed to tamp inflation by increasing interest rates is negatively affecting consumers when it comes to loans and credit cards.
There are 2.5 million more people since 2019 in credit card debt to a total 18.3 million at the end of 2022. Consumers are turning to loans and credit cards to get by. Meanwhile, balances on unsecured personal loans increased 26.3% from the same period last year to a record high of $225 billion, according to TransUnion. The number of borrowers with at least one credit card and carrying a balance grew 10% to 165 million in the first quarter from 150 million in the first quarter of 2021. The number of consumers with a personal loan jumped almost 18% to 22.4 million from 19 million during the same period.
The average limit on new credit cards was $5,421 in 2023, up from $5,226 a year ago, according to TransUnion. The average personal loan balance hit its highest level on record at $11,281, while the average size of new personal loans increased by nearly 11% from last year to $7,368. That’s a somewhat positive sign, partly because lenders reduce credit lines when they sense an economic downturn. For instance, during the Great Recession, banks lowered limits by approximately $405 billion between June 2008 and January 2010.
However, are consumers guilty of not fixing their own financial issues before it’s too late? What gets some people trapped in debt are bad habits. Splurging rather than saving only gets worse as credit card debt gets compounded.
Some tips:
• Pay off your higher interest credit card debt before paying others that are lower.
• Try transfering any higher credit card debt to lower interest credit cards.
• Better yet, pay off all your credit cards and don’t make any uneccessary purchases until the debt is paid. Avoid buying an item for 24 hours to contemplate whether you really need it.
• Contact every company that bills you to see if they can reduce what you pay.
• Live withing your means! We all want to live like Kings and Queens, but keep it real. A study found 78% of NFL players go bankrupt and about 60% of National Basketball Association players reportedly go broke within five years after they retire. When the spigot of money gets turned off it’s hard to change lifestyles. One NFL player, Chad Ochocinco, did the opposite. He lived in the Cincy stadium for free for two years and bought only “fake” jewelry amongst other savings even though he was paid millions.
• Get a second job or a “gig” type job that still allows you to take care of family obligations until finances are in order. The good news is that there are plenty of jobs avaiable with unemployment hitting a record low of 3.4% and in Ohio it dropped to 3.7%, the lowest since 1977.
• Don’t splurge because you’ve saved money.
• Is there anything you can cancel or reduce that is un-used, not needed or under-utilized? Magazine subscriptions, gym memberships, subscription services, house-cleaning services, yard services that can be done yourself, streaming video services, nail appointments, eating out, eating and drinking excessively, eliminating medications or medical needs by living healthy, turn down the heat or cooling, and buying items online.
Avoid traps that will keep you in debt.
• If you go out for dinner, use coupons and only go to places with deals and specials or happy hours. It’s very easy to find deals at restauarants, so if you are paying full price, change your habits.
• If you travel, it doesn’t mean you have to spend tons on the vacation. Every aspect of a vacation can be done on the cheap without it costing tons. Plan ahead to get the best price.
• Avoid buying items not on sale. Everything goes on sale, so wait to purchase the item until then.
• If you spending more because you are depressed or can’t control your spending, find out what the root cause of those issues are and fix them.
