After everyone drove rental cars from up north to Florida, Arizona, and other southern locales for Spring Break and over winter many of the car rental agencies now have a glut of rental cars. No more Snowbirds means they have too many cars to rent too. The good news is that you can now get car rentals from those locations for as little as $10 a day plus tax, including luxury cars and SUVs! They must be driven one way though and to northern locales. RESTAURANT.COM/TIPPING
You may see some more Restaurant.com certificates with a higher minimum spend requirement, due to an internal process change at Restaurant.com. There used to be over 200 restaurants with Restaurant.com offers in the northeast Ohio area, but now it’s less than 150. My guess is that they were having a hard time signing on new restaurants, but with higher minimums they may get more restaurants to sign up. In essence, the deals will be more like the half off Groupon deals.
Restaurant.com has discount codes of 40% to 60% (making a $25 gift certificate $4 to $6) off during parts of the month instead of 70% and 80% like they used to too. It’s still a good deal if you are planning to go the restaurant and spend the money anway where you’ll then be able to use a Restaurant.com certificate. It’s a better deal than Groupon too when you use the discount code – for instance $4 to get $25 off when using the 60% off code and where you may now have to spend $50. Getting to $50 can be a lot though for one couple.
Something else might be causing them to change the minimum spend. Some folks tip the amount after coupons. That shorts the waiter or waitress the appropriate tip. Not tipping appropriately gives couponers a bad name. The rule is to tip 15% BEFORE any discounts or coupons are applied. Of course, 15% is for good service so you can tip more or less depending on the service. But remember, restaurant workers get paid a federal minimum wage of $2.13 an hour although some states it’s higher. So that is why it’s important to tip the right amount. Their minimum wage is lower because they get tipped.
Some businesses keep from offering coupons when people are cheap about tipping or give the business a hard time about them. Most have the restrictions written on the coupon, but some folks take umbrage when the business sticks to the rules although I’ve been to plenty of restaurants that bend the rules. Just be nice and they may bend the rules for you, but don’t have a hissy fit if they don’t.
One restaurant I went to for the first time the lady even told me to tip on the amount before the coupon. So I’m sure she’s had her share of getting stiffed enough times in order for her to say that. There’s a big difference with being cheap and being frugal. You’re likely to offend someone being cheap, but not when you’re being frugal.
Here’s a little trivia. What does a tip mean? It stands for To Insure Promptness. And in some countries like Japan, and China a tip is not expected and in Japan it’s sometimes considered an insult (kinda like a penny tip here in the U.S.). In many other country’s customs a tip is not expected. Just don’t ask me what nations are ok to tip at the Epcot Center.
COUPON INSERTS
I noticed the Sun newspapers on the east side were missing coupon inserts so I called them to complain as they were in the west side editions. They said they are inserted according to what the company says wants them inserted. I just wonder if there is some person that makes their rounds and swipes them at the stores I go to.
One CVS actually had to keep the inserts behind the counter because of some old lady was stealing them. It might be the same lady. It’s illegal! Yes, it’s stealing and annoying so don’t bogart the coupon inserts! I buy full papers, usually 4 extra of them. I do love it though when the papers have extra inserts because of some glitch when inserting them. To think I can get so happy when there are extra inserts in the paper.
HELLO, WELCOME TO …..
Did you notice recently how workers at Home Depot have been very helpful and always say hello? It’s not by accident. The company found that Lowe’s was found to be “friendlier” to customers, so Home Depot decided to instill rules that its workers had to greet customers and ask them if they need help more often. If you’re single with low self-esteem the place will make you feel great.
Same goes for TGIFridays and other restaurants where the bartenders will even ask for your name and sometimes shake your hand. Sometimes I just want to growl and protect my food with an arm barrier. I just don’t want to be bothered by some company edict that pushes fakeness.
CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens also has their cashier nearest the door welcome you to their store. Eventually, I expect to get a hug when I enter a store and maybe a quick back massage.
