GIANT EAGLE CHANGES
Giant Eagle is closing their two stores in the Toledo area in Rossford at the Crossroads Centre and on West Central Ave. in Sylvania Township. They opened the Rossford store in 2001 and the Sylvania store a couple years later. Lots of competition there with Kroger, Meijer and other locals stores. Without a lot of other Giant Eagle stores in the area they didn’t advertise as much and they didn’t put their ad circulars in The Toledo Blade newspaper, so it hurt their sales. Ya gotta advertise to beat the competition! I rarely shop at stores whose ad I can’t get.
With Giant Eagle set to open new stores in the Indianapolis area they wanted to focus on growing without supporting underperforming stores. They’ve been opening Market District stores to compete with high-end stores like Whole Foods and Heinen’s. Giant Eagle also opened Good Cents stores to compete with low-end stores like Dollar stores and Aldi’s.
Giant Eagle has about a third of the northeast Ohio market share. Walmart is next at about 20%, followed by Acme at about 5%, Buehlers at about 4%, and Heinens with about the same. To gain market share I think Giant Eagle has to fix a few things that I hear frequently about them. First is the programs that make them different than other stores (like doubles). The other is the misnomer that their prices are high – they used to be as they’ve lowered prices, but also that they have sales like BOGO deals that many other stores don’t offer. When is that last time you saw a BOGO sale or even any sale for that matter at Wal-Mart, Wholesale Clubs, and Marcs? They also have to show their quality is the best as I’ve heard people moan about their meat and produce being subpar. They are addressing that in their commercials.
One thing that hurts Giant Eagle is that they don’t promote their double coupons as much as they should. There are still too many people don’t know how it works. Krogers, Meijers and many other stores don’t double now (some used to) so why not show how much more can be saved with doubles. Yep, a 75 cent couple will double to $1.50 off (anything .99 and less doubles)! Many people think it is only certain days or weeks that they do it. Nope! It’s automatic and it’s at all times. At my classes I get people asking how it works even though they’ve doubled for around 15 years. With doubles they need to show how items can be free or close to it, unlike most any other grocery stores.
They also don’t note in dollars how much can be saved in Fuelperks. Same goes with their gift card perks. They say 10 or 20 cents is earned in Fuelperks, but people don’t realize that is $3 or $6 for every $50 spent. Krogers and a lot of other stores Fuel programs are lame and don’t offer the same savings.
Giant Eagle also doesn’t show that they have BOGO (buy one get one free) sales or other sales that stores like Wal-Mart and Marc’s don’t do. That’s huge! Yet they are now trying to compete on lower prices to be more apples to apples. Instead they should advertise their differences to show how much more can be saved at Giant Eagle. If people knew more of the savings they offer aside from trying to offer the lowest price they might change their mind about them being high priced.
People still think Wal-Mart has lower prices than Giant Eagle. Not like they used to! Wal-mart’s produce prices are way high. And without all the perks that Giant Eagle offers their prices are worse than at Giant Eagle. Remember the ads that show you can save 10% to 20% or so at Wal-Mart over Giant Eagle? Get the Giant Eagle credit card that gives you an extra 4 cents for every $50 spent and those savings go away with just the Fuelperks (10 cent Fuelperks for every $50 spent equals 30 gallons allowed at 10 cents = $3 ~ more when it’s 20 cent Fuelperks with gift cards). Add in double coupons and sales, especially BOGO sales, and then prices are lower at Giant Eagle.
I see lots of commercials about Giant Eagle’s fresh produce and lower prices, but they need to do more about their other perks instead of just buzzing through them like they mean nothing.
Giant Eagle is trying to stand out on price alone. However, they also got rid of matching competitor’s coupons, giving dollars off on-your-next-shopping-trip coupons when you spent a certain amount before coupons (now it is after coupons) on some items, and Foodperks this past year. They had to lower prices to keep up with other stores so they got rid of some money-saving programs like those.
I can save 70% and more with double coupons at Giant Eagle so that is why I shop there. I can’t do that at other stores that don’t double. So Giant Eagle needs to crow about those kind of savings. Do some funny commercials showing the math on all the savings and differences from other stores instead of the boring commercials they are running now. They just don’t stand out. Even use a character called Gigantic Eagle that doubles in size when it eats a coupon …or something like that.
STORE RATINGS
Wal-Mart finished last among 55 supermarkets in the annual Consumer Reports store survey, earning subpar scores for checkout speed, employee courtesy, and meat and produce quality. Even with the low ratings, 28% of those surveyed shop at Walmart. Fourteen of the top 20 chains even had prices on par with Walmart’s. Wal-Mart was cited for not enough open checkouts (cited by 19 percent of shoppers), followed by congested aisles, out-of-stock advertised specials, lack of choice, out-of-stock basic items, and spotty price labeling.
Consumer Reports found that Trader Joe’s, Costco, Stater Bros., WinCo, Aldi, ShopRite, Save-A-Lot and Sam’s Club have the lowest prices.

WHO’S THE CHEAPEST?
A test to see who has the cheapest prices between Kroger, Wal-Mart and Aldi’s found that Aldi’s had the cheapest prices. I’m not surprised since I’ve been seeing Wal-Marts prices increasing while Aldi’s has remained competitive.
Some of these type of tests are subjective. I like that they took into account the loyalty card savings at Krogers too.
I’ve seen tests where they say warehouse clubs are cheaper, but they don’t point out that many don’t take coupons and they are pricing them using the bulk packaging, factoring their per-ounce price. Not apples to apples.

Everyone can always use a mint during the day. There is this one guy I know that could use a mint much more often though. His breath smells like cat vomit and phosphor that was fermenting in dead fish. Yes, not pleasant. I want to tell him his breath is putrid, but he might cough on me in a fit of rage. It’s not worth the chance or at least that is what I keep telling myself daily.
I appreciate that some of you have been reading my blog for many years. Sometimes you may stop reading because your are just not into deals anymore so you read it in spurts when you get back into deals. Or because you live in Poughkeepsie you don’t care about some deals that you find in the Cleveland area. I get it. It just makes you hopping mad to see a deal that is of no use to you. And to be hopping when mad means you are very upset and nobody wants to see that plus you could risk a serious injury. I don’t want people injured just because they read my blog.
Some of you even unsubscribe from my e-mail. I cry for days when someone unsubscribes. I am filled with inner torment when that happens. I want to know why and did I say or do something to offend them. I do respect different points of view. Perhaps they took what I said in the wrong context. Maybe they didn’t get my sarcasm. Did they not like that I posted a deal that ended that very day or that corn was really two for $1 instead of three for $1. Maybe I’m being too sensitive. I should look at the positive and think that I helped eventually made millionaires out of everyone that reads my blog so they don’t care about the deals anymore. That made me feel better and stopped me from bawling my eyes, convulsing, and wailing uncontrollably like a baby does for what seems like no reason.
Again, you are almost to the end of the blog. If I were you, I’d high-five the person closest to you. It’s a achievement that not everybody attains. I’d write it down in your diary if you have one. Walgreen is closing 76 stores in 2nd half of 2014. They are still planning on opening more stores than they close though. Most of the stores closed are near other Walgreens stores. The list should be out soon.
